GLP-1 Research Tipped for Nobel Before 2026 Medicine Prize Announcement

Research into appetite-regulating hormones was tipped as a possible Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine subject before the 2026 award announcement—but it was an outside prediction, not a decision by the Nobel committee. An AFP report published October 5 named GLP-1 research as a leading possibility. News listings later reported that the prize went to three researchers for optogenetics instead.

What was predicted—and when?

AFP published its report on October 5, 2026, before the medicine prize announcement that day. It described speculation about several areas of appetite research that might receive recognition. The report was a forecast, not evidence that the Nobel committee had selected the subject or any particular laureate.

David Pendlebury, head of research analysis at Clarivate, put GLP-1 at the top of his prediction list, citing its worldwide clinical impact. He told AFP, “I would put GLP-1 at the top of the list, just because of its enormous worldwide clinical impact,” and said, “A Nobel Prize recognising any of that work is a likelihood.” Those were Pendlebury’s assessments, not statements from the Nobel committee.

Which areas of appetite research were in the discussion?

The AFP report described a broad field, rather than a prediction limited to one drug or one hormone. The areas it mentioned were:

  • GLP-1: The report described glucagon-like peptide 1 as an intestinal hormone that signals satiety after eating. It said medicines such as Ozempic mimic GLP-1 and mentioned Mounjaro among weight-loss drugs. These examples were context, not a comparison or treatment recommendation.
  • Leptin and ghrelin: The report associated these hormones with satiety and hunger, respectively.
  • Microbiome research: Work in this area was also included in the speculation.

AFP named Daniel Drucker, Jens Juul Holst, and Svetlana Mojsov as scientists often mentioned in connection with possible recognition. That does not establish that the Nobel committee considered or endorsed any of them.

What was the reported 2026 prize outcome?

News listings dated October 5 reported that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for optogenetics. That reported outcome differed from the pre-announcement speculation about appetite research. The Nobel organization’s indexed historical laureate list covers awards through 2025, and an official 2026 announcement was not available in the sources consulted here; the outcome is therefore attributed to news reporting rather than presented as independently verified against a Nobel record.

Could GLP-1 research win a Nobel Prize?

It was considered a possibility by outside observers before the 2026 announcement, with Pendlebury expressing a favorable likelihood assessment. That prediction did not match the outcome reported on October 5. The report does not establish what the committee discussed, and it cannot be treated as evidence of a future Nobel decision.
