People who say they are struggling to get by are far less likely to say they trust science “a lot” than people who feel financially comfortable. The Wellcome Global Monitor’s 2026 report found a 19-percentage-point gap in 2025: 20% of respondents finding it difficult to get by expressed a lot of trust, compared with 39% of those living comfortably on their present income.
The finding is an association in survey data, not proof that money problems alone cause distrust. The same evidence points to healthcare experiences, confidence in government and national institutions, perceived corruption and inequality as part of the context in which trust is formed.

What the latest global survey found
Wellcome’s 2026 Global Monitor surveyed more than 140,000 people in 140 countries, with fieldwork conducted in 2025. Across the 108 countries included in all three Wellcome waves, 72% of respondents said they had “some” or “a lot” of trust in science in 2025. That compares with 80% in 2020 and 77% in 2018.

The sharper divide appears when respondents describe their household finances. In 2025, 39% of people living comfortably on their current income said they trusted science “a lot.” Only 20% of people who said they were finding it difficult to get by gave that answer. The difference was 19 percentage points in 2025, up from 13 points in 2018.

Does financial hardship cause distrust?
The surveys do not establish that financial hardship by itself causes people to reject science. Financial security is entangled with the institutions and services people encounter. People under financial pressure may have less access to healthcare, less confidence that public systems will respond to their needs, or more reason to view official claims skeptically. Those pathways are plausible explanations, but the cross-sectional associations cannot identify a single cause.
Fuglsang’s 2024 analysis of 145 countries reinforces the importance of how people perceive their own circumstances. Subjective income—whether people feel financially secure or under strain—was more strongly related to trust in science than relative income. The relationship also varied with institutional quality, the national economic climate, perceived scientific effectiveness and trust in government. The study is observational, so it should be read as evidence of correlation rather than a causal estimate.
Healthcare experience is closely connected to trust
Wellcome’s data show a similar pattern for health institutions. Globally, 26% of respondents said they trusted science “a lot.” Among people with a lot of confidence in their country’s hospitals and health clinics, the share rose to 43%.

That does not mean a positive hospital experience automatically creates trust in every scientific field. It does show why abstract attitudes can be shaped by practical encounters: whether clinics are available, whether treatment works, and whether health authorities communicate clearly can affect how credible science feels in daily life.
Trust in science is not the same as trust in scientists
The Wellcome question measures trust in science. A separate preregistered international study examined trust in scientists directly. Its online survey included 71,922 respondents in 68 countries and 37 languages, with data collected from November 2022 through August 2023. The study reported a grand mean of 3.62 on a five-point trust scale, and 78% of respondents said scientists were qualified to conduct high-impact research.
| Study | Population and timing | Main result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wellcome Global Monitor 2026 | More than 140,000 people in 140 countries; 2025 fieldwork | 72% had some or a lot of trust in science; 39% versus 20% trusted science “a lot” across financial groups | Trend comparison uses 108 countries surveyed in all three waves |
| International survey published in Nature Human Behaviour | 71,922 respondents in 68 countries; November 2022–August 2023 | Mean trust in scientists: 3.62/5; 78% viewed scientists as qualified for high-impact research | Online, cross-sectional quota samples were weighted for national age, gender and education distributions |
These results are compatible rather than contradictory. A majority can express moderate trust while a smaller share expresses the strongest category, and “science” and “scientists” are different objects of trust. The Nature Human Behaviour survey also cautions that online access and translation may affect comparisons between countries.

Is trust in science falling after Covid?
On the Wellcome trend measure, the answer is yes from the 2020 peak: 72% reported some or a lot of trust in 2025, compared with 80% in 2020. Trust in 2018 was 77%, so the 2025 figure is five points below 2018 and eight points below 2020.

Because China has a very large population, that change affects the global totals. The report says trust in science “a lot” has fallen since 2020 both with China included and with China excluded, so the decline is not dependent on that country alone.
National conditions that track with trust
Financial hardship is one part of a wider pattern. Wellcome reports lower trust in countries where people describe national institutions as weak, government trust as low and corruption as more prevalent. Countries with greater economic inequality also tend to show lower trust in science.

- Subjective financial security: how easy or difficult respondents say it is to get by shows a larger relationship with trust than relative income in Fuglsang’s analysis.
- Institutional confidence: confidence in government and the quality of public institutions moderate the relationship between income perceptions and trust.
- Healthcare contact: confidence in hospitals and clinics is associated with a higher probability of reporting a lot of trust in science.
- Economic climate and inequality: country-level conditions can shape whether scientific advice appears effective, fair and relevant.
How to interpret the numbers responsibly
Look at the response category
“Some or a lot” combines two levels of trust, while “a lot” is the strongest category reported in the Wellcome figures. Comparing those measures as if they were identical exaggerates or obscures differences.
Separate personal income from perceived hardship
Objective earnings and a person’s assessment of whether they can get by are not interchangeable. The strongest income-related relationship in Fuglsang’s work involved subjective hardship.

Check the year and method
The Wellcome trend uses repeated country coverage and 2025 fieldwork. The 68-country scientist survey is a different, online cross-sectional design collected earlier. Neither should be treated as a single real-time global score for every year.
Best Value
Do not turn correlation into a verdict about individuals
A group-level association does not mean every person facing hardship distrusts science, or that financially comfortable people necessarily trust it. The figures describe distributions across large samples.
Why the finding matters for science communication
John-Arne Røttingen, Wellcome’s chief executive officer, summarized the practical stakes: “Public trust shapes whether scientific advances can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.” If trust is lower where people feel economically insecure or poorly served by institutions, publishing more information alone may not close the gap. Reliable services, transparent decision-making and evidence that improves everyday outcomes are part of the trust environment measured by these surveys.
