What happened to the 10-year Treasury yield?
The 10-year Treasury yield rose during a broader repricing of government bonds. Reuters reported that it reached 5.34% intraday on October 1, the highest level since 2002. The figure describes a high reached during trading; it does not mean the yield finished the day there.

The reports use different observation times and, in some cases, different quoted levels. Keep an intraday high separate from a close, and do not treat any of these reported market quotations as independently verified official Treasury daily par-curve data.
Why were Treasury yields rising?
Bond prices and yields generally move in opposite directions. When investors sell existing bonds, their prices fall; because a buyer is paying less for the same stream of payments, the yield implied by that price rises.

Coverage of the selloff pointed to a mix of pressures. Reuters linked the international move to fiscal worries and market concerns; 24/7 Wall St. also discussed public borrowing, inflation and uncertainty. Axios described interacting macroeconomic pressures and the mechanics of supply and demand in the Treasury market. These accounts do not establish a single cause or rank the factors by importance.
Fiscal supply and borrowing concerns
Investors were weighing government borrowing and deficits. Concern about the volume of bonds governments need to issue can put pressure on prices if buyers require higher yields to absorb that supply or compensate for perceived fiscal risk. That is one pressure cited in coverage, not proof that deficits alone drove the move.

Inflation, energy and interest-rate expectations
Inflation and energy uncertainty can affect expectations for future interest rates and the compensation investors seek for holding longer-term bonds. If investors think rates may remain higher, or demand more compensation for inflation uncertainty, long-term yields can rise. The reports identify these as contributing concerns; they do not establish a definitive chain from any one energy or inflation development to the October yield peak.
Geopolitical risk and market mechanics
Geopolitical developments can change demand for government bonds and expectations for inflation, growth or public spending. Trading conditions and changes in who is buying or selling can amplify moves, too. Axios emphasized these supply-and-demand mechanics alongside broader economic forces; Reuters and AP described a wider selloff, not an isolated Treasury event.

Why could yields rise despite weak jobs data?
A weak employment report can lead investors to expect lower interest rates, which may support bond prices and pull yields down. But employment is only one input. If concerns about inflation, energy, public borrowing, geopolitical risk or bond supply are pushing in the other direction, yields can still rise. Expectations may also differ over the likely policy response and the outlook for longer-term borrowing costs.
The reports on this selloff do not establish that a particular weak jobs release caused—or failed to cause—the October move. The useful distinction is between one economic indicator and the wider set of forces that shape demand for longer-term bonds.

Was the selloff limited to U.S. Treasuries?
No. Reuters described selling across government-bond markets, while the Associated Press reported sharp swings in European sovereign yields during the same episode. That international context matters: investors reassessing inflation, borrowing needs or interest-rate expectations in one major market can influence how they price bonds elsewhere. The reporting establishes a broad repricing, but not that every country moved by the same amount or for exactly the same reason.
How can a higher 10-year yield affect mortgages and other borrowing?
The 10-year Treasury is a widely watched benchmark for longer-term borrowing costs and asset prices. A sustained rise can put upward pressure on mortgage rates, corporate financing costs and other rates, and can change how investors value financial assets.

It does not set a household’s mortgage rate one-for-one. Actual rates also depend on factors such as lender pricing, the type and term of the loan, borrower characteristics and conditions in mortgage markets. The same distinction applies to other borrowing: Treasury yields influence benchmarks, but are not the full price a borrower pays.
