Glean founder and CEO Arvind Jain says the company’s goal is to make its enterprise AI platform “very easily replaceable.” He is describing portability, not a plan to abandon the business: Glean wants customers to own and move the memory, context and feedback its AI coworkers accumulate, so they can change models or vendors without losing institutional knowledge.
What Jain meant by “easy to replace”
Jain made the remark in an interview with Cristian Dina at HumanX in Amsterdam on September 23, 2026, reported by The Next Web on October 15. “Our goal is to actually make us very easily replaceable,” Jain said.

The statement addresses vendor lock-in. AI agents become more useful as they learn an organization’s terminology, workflows and preferences. Jain said Glean stores that memory and employee feedback in a standard format controlled by Glean’s customer, rather than trapping it inside a model provider such as Claude or OpenAI. In principle, a company could switch models or replace Glean while preserving the context its agents learned.
Glean’s role in an enterprise AI stack
From search engine to context layer
Glean began as an internal company search engine and now connects to systems including Salesforce, HubSpot, Jira, GitHub, and human-resources and IT tools. It maps people, concepts and processes into knowledge graphs, then uses that context for search, an AI coworker and task-oriented agents.

Glean can also sit beneath another interface. Jain described a setup in which Claude asks Glean for relevant enterprise context instead of searching roughly 100 company systems itself. That makes Glean a retrieval, permissions and orchestration layer rather than simply another chatbot.
Model routing instead of one-model dependency
Jain said Glean uses a model other than Claude for 85% to 90% of enterprise tasks because Claude is expensive and some GPT models can perform most of that work at an order of magnitude lower cost. Those percentages and cost comparisons are Jain’s statements, not an independent benchmark.
Glean says its studies found that putting the context layer in front of a model made Claude twice as fast, reduced token use by half and made the resulting work preferred five times more often. These are claims from Glean’s own studies; the cited coverage does not establish their test design, sample size or independent replication.

Who owns the data and who can see it?
Programmatic permission checks
Jain said Glean follows the permissions already configured in a company’s source systems. An employee should not gain access to another employee’s inbox simply because Glean can index it. The access checks are enforced programmatically rather than delegated to an AI model, because a model can interpret permissions inconsistently or make a mistake.
Personal information remains separate
Jain also said personal data, such as an employee’s LinkedIn messages, remains with that employee and does not automatically become company data. Organizations evaluating the platform still need to verify how each connector, retention policy and export process handles personal and regulated information.
How large is Glean?
The Next Web reported Jain’s estimates of more than 1,000 large-enterprise customers, millions of users and about 1,500 employees. He said word of mouth—and users bringing Glean to a new employer—is the company’s biggest growth channel.

Jain traced the idea to a problem at Rubrik: as the company grew, workers struggled to find information. His more than decade-long experience at Google, including work on Search, Maps and YouTube, influenced Glean’s approach. The Next Web said Glean started in early 2019 and adopted transformer language models when relatively few companies were doing so.
Funding and a possible public listing
Jain said Glean has no current plan to raise more money or go public. The company is nevertheless preparing internal processes in case it decides to list later. That preparation is not an announcement of an initial public offering or a timetable for one.
Does this mean Glean is competing with model providers?
Glean’s positioning is different from a single-model enterprise assistant. The relevant evaluation questions are whether a customer can export its agent memory and feedback, how broad its connectors and knowledge graph are, which models it can route to, how permissions are enforced, what governance tools agents provide, and what deployment and total costs look like.

A model vendor may supply the underlying reasoning engine, while Glean supplies organization-specific context and access controls. The practical benefit of that separation is optionality: customers can change the engine without rebuilding every connection and workflow. The practical risk is operational complexity, because the customer must govern multiple systems, models and data flows.

Jain has also consistently described workplace AI as augmentation. At Fortune’s Workplace Innovation Summit on May 20, 2026, Fortune quoted him saying: “I don’t think AI—or actually, for me, hopefully forever, too—AI never replaces any human, and it just actually augments us, enables us, allows us to do higher quality work.”

For wider context, Fortune attributed 54,836 AI-linked layoff plans in 2025 and 71,825 tech-linked job-cut announcements since 2023 to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Those totals count announcements classified as AI-linked or tech-linked; they do not establish that AI caused every listed cut.

- Portability: Ask what memory, feedback, prompts, agent configurations and knowledge-graph data can be exported, in which format and on what schedule.
- Permission fidelity: Test inherited permissions with sensitive mail, files, tickets and HR records, including a recently revoked user.
