A glass-basket air fryer makes it easier to see food as it cooks and can help you avoid a non-stick coating on the cooking bowl itself. It does not automatically cook better: CHOICE says the glass models it tested performed on par with non-glass models. The trade-offs are weight, hot handling and the possibility that a crisper tray or other food-contact part is still coated.
What makes an air fryer a “glass” model?
Instead of a conventional opaque drawer, a glass air fryer has a transparent bowl or basket. That basic idea appears in different designs: some keep a familiar drawer-style format, while others place a removable heating element above a glass container. The shape and handling can therefore vary as much as the materials.

CHOICE has named Australian examples including the Healthy Choice 6.5L Digital Air Fryer AFG605, Kmart Anko and Smith & Nobel models, Sunbeam’s NutriCrisp Glass Air Fryer, and removable-element designs such as Ninja Crispi Portable and Dreame Tasti. This is not a complete or guaranteed-current retail list. CHOICE kitchen expert Chantelle Dart said the category was appearing more often in Australia, but the available coverage does not quantify sales or adoption.

See browning without opening the fryer
The clear bowl lets you check colour and progress without pulling out a drawer. That can be useful when you are learning a recipe or want to avoid interrupting cooking just to inspect it. Visibility does not remove the need to shake or turn food when a recipe calls for it.

Avoid a coating on the glass container
The glass bowl itself does not need a non-stick coating. That may suit people who prefer to avoid a coated cooking container, but it does not establish that the whole appliance is coating-free. Inspect the crisper tray, insert and any other part that touches food.
Wipe-clean glass
CHOICE says glass is easy to wipe and generally dishwasher-safe. The bowl also avoids the concern of scratching or degrading a non-stick coating on that container. Check the manual for the specific model: its trays and accessories may have different cleaning instructions.

Are glass air fryers better at cooking?
Not on the evidence available. CHOICE reports that the glass models it tested performed on par with non-glass models, so visibility or glass construction alone is not a reason to expect crispier or more even results.

What are the trade-offs?
Hot glass needs careful handling
CHOICE reports measuring glass baskets at over 100 degrees, depending on the settings used; the cited passage does not specify a unit, so do not assume one from that figure. Dart advises following the manufacturer’s safety instructions and recommends looking for thermal-shock-resistant borosilicate glass. Use the appliance’s prescribed handling method and take care when removing, carrying or washing the hot container.
Weight and grip matter
CHOICE warns that glass baskets weigh more than metal ones and may be harder to manoeuvre or wash by hand. Consider whether you can lift the filled container securely, especially when hot, and whether its handle and balance suit your grip and dexterity.

Fewer shapes and sizes
CHOICE says there are fewer glass-air-fryer shapes and sizes than conventional drawer designs. Capacity is only part of the fit: compare the bowl’s shape with the food you cook, and check whether the appliance and container fit your counter, cupboard and cleaning routine.

Australian models show why the label “glass air fryer” is not enough to identify the tray material. CHOICE’s August 2026 comparison says the Kmart Anko model has a non-stick tray, while the Healthy Choice model uses stainless steel. CHOICE also reports that Dreame Tasti uses a stainless-steel crisper plate.

The Lenoxx product page describes the Healthy Choice AFG605 as a 6.5L digital air fryer with a tempered-glass cooking basket and stainless-steel mesh grill insert, with temperature control from 40–200°C. At the time that page was accessed, it displayed “Sold Out”; availability can change, so verify current stock and specifications with the retailer.
How to choose one for your kitchen
- Decide which design suits you. Compare a conventional drawer, a glass drawer and a removable-heating-element setup. Think about how you will move the hot bowl and element, not just how the appliance looks on the bench.
- Check every food-contact material. Confirm whether the crisper plate, mesh insert and other accessories are stainless steel, non-stick coated or another material. A glass bowl does not answer this question for the rest of the appliance.
- Match capacity and shape to your meals. Check the stated capacity and, where multiple bowls are supplied, the size of each container. Consider whether the usable surface and shape suit your usual portions.
- Assess lifting and cleaning in practice. Look at handle position, the container’s weight and the maker’s cleaning instructions. If you will wash it by hand, account for the weight when wet and whether you can grip it safely.
- Check storage, warranty and current terms. Measure the appliance and any removable bowls or accessories against your available cupboard space. Verify the current price, stock status and warranty with the seller or manufacturer; older comparisons are not a reliable live price list.
When a glass basket makes sense
Choose glass if being able to watch food cook and avoiding a coating on the bowl are meaningful benefits for you—and the specific model’s tray materials, weight and handling work for your household. If those advantages do not matter much, a conventional drawer may offer more shape and size options. Neither design is inherently the better cooker based on the available CHOICE comparison.
