Its most distinctive features are two 2.5G Ethernet ports and a touchscreen that can switch VPN settings and share Wi-Fi by QR code. It is not a battery-powered hotspot, and its headline Wi-Fi and VPN speeds are rated or test-specific figures—not guarantees of what a hotel connection will deliver.
What the Slate 7 is—and what it is not
GL.iNet describes the Slate 7, model GL-BE3600, as a portable, dual-band Wi-Fi 7 router. It can create a private local network using an upstream connection, such as hotel Wi-Fi in repeater mode or a wired Ethernet connection. Rather than reconnecting each phone, laptop, and tablet to a different hotel network, you can connect the router upstream and then join your devices to its network.

It is not a cellular hotspot: the cited specifications do not list a mobile modem or SIM connection. Nor is it battery-powered. GL.iNet specifies USB-C power with USB Power Delivery compatibility, so you need an appropriate power source while using it. The manufacturer lists dimensions of 130 × 91 × 34 mm and a weight of 295 g. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Who should consider the Slate 7?
- Remote workers who want a single travel network: Use one router network for multiple devices rather than configuring each one to join the upstream network separately.
- Travelers who need wired connections: The two 2.5G Ethernet ports can be useful for connecting a wired device or taking a wired internet feed, subject to the router’s port roles and configuration.
- VPN users who want router-level controls: GL.iNet lists VPN client and server operation, with a touchscreen shortcut for VPN toggling and provider changes. A VPN subscription is not specified as included.
- People who prefer not to configure networking equipment: Repeater setup and router controls can simplify some tasks, but this remains a router with settings and upstream-network dependencies, not a plug-in guarantee of compatibility with every hotel.
It is a less natural fit if you need a self-powered hotspot, cellular service, or a device that requires no setup or configuration. The cited sources do not establish universal compatibility with hotel captive portals; the hotel’s login flow and network behavior can affect whether repeater mode works smoothly.

These are manufacturer specifications and feature claims, not independent verification. In particular, the 3600 Mbps label combines rated wireless rates across bands; it is not a promise that one device will reach 3.6 Gbps over Wi-Fi. How fast is the Slate 7?
Wi-Fi: a rated maximum, not a hotel-speed promise
GL.iNet lists maximum advertised rates of 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz. The company says its tests were conducted on a local network and that actual speeds vary with network configuration. Those rates describe the router’s wireless capability under specified conditions; they do not describe the speed of a hotel’s internet connection, which may be slower or congested. VPN: protocol and operating mode matter
GL.iNet lists VPN throughput of up to 385 Mbps for OpenVPN DCO and up to 490 Mbps for WireGuard in client mode. The company says server-mode performance is slower and notes the figures come from local-network tests. Treat them as manufacturer-reported maximums, not expected speeds on a particular trip. VPN performance can also be limited by the upstream connection, protocol, server location, and configuration. GL.iNet’s specification page gives the figures and qualification.
In a TechRadar review dated February 25, 2026, the reviewer reported around 2.1 Gbps of observed 5 GHz wireless throughput and WireGuard results typically just above 500 Mbps in that review’s testing. TechRadar also reported substantially lower VPN throughput with OpenVPN. These are that reviewer’s results, not a promise or a test conducted for this article. What the touchscreen and ports add
Touchscreen controls
The touchscreen is more than a status display. GL.iNet says it can show status and speed, create a QR code for Wi-Fi sharing, toggle a VPN, and change VPN provider. That can make routine actions easier when you do not want to open a configuration page, though the exact options available can depend on firmware and setup. The listed VPN-service support is a vendor claim; it does not mean a subscription is bundled. GL.iNet’s travel-router listing describes the touchscreen features.
Two 2.5G Ethernet ports
GL.iNet specifies one WAN and one LAN port, both at 2.5G. This is useful for travelers who can connect to wired internet or want a wired local device, but do not assume the LAN port is freely configurable without checking the current hardware and configuration documentation. Port availability also does not make a slow upstream connection faster.

Setup for a hotel or other travel network
GL.iNet’s setup guide and its April 2, 2025 setup video cover initial configuration, including Repeater Mode. Menu names and details can change with firmware, so use the current guide for the exact steps on your device rather than relying solely on an older video. The video is useful for process context, but its promotional performance figures should not replace the current product-page specifications. - Power the router. Connect a suitable USB-C PD power source. GL.iNet lists input profiles of 5V/3A, 9V/3A, or 12V/2.5A; verify the supplied adapter and regional package contents rather than assuming a particular adapter is included. The product page lists the input profiles.
- Open the router’s setup interface. Join the Slate 7’s default network or connect by Ethernet, then follow the current user guide to reach its setup interface and set the initial credentials.
- Choose how to connect upstream. For hotel Wi-Fi, configure Repeater Mode and select the hotel network. For a wired feed, connect the source to the WAN port and configure the router according to the guide.
- Complete any upstream login. If the hotel requires a captive-portal sign-in, follow the portal flow available through the router’s setup process. The sources do not establish that every hotel portal will work with the Slate 7, so verify the connection before relying on it for work.
- Connect your devices and configure optional features. Join your devices to the Slate 7 network, then set up VPN or DNS options if needed. Check that the VPN is connected and that essential services work before sending sensitive traffic.
VPN capability is not a complete security guarantee
A router VPN can route connected devices’ traffic through a VPN service, but the feature alone does not prove that every risk on public Wi-Fi is eliminated. Security depends on the VPN provider and configuration, DNS behavior, upstream network, firmware updates, and your threat model. Confirm the router’s VPN status and the behavior you need; do not assume a VPN subscription is included or that enabling one replaces device updates and other security practices. GL.iNet describes VPN client/server and DNS encryption features on its travel-router listing.

How it differs from other travel routers
There is not enough comparable, normalized information here to claim that the Slate 7 is faster or better than every alternative. To compare travel routers for your own trip, line up the details that affect your setup:
- Wi-Fi generation, bands, and whether speeds are rated maxima or measured results.
- Number, speed, and documented role of Ethernet ports.
- VPN results by protocol and by client or server mode, with the tester and conditions identified.
- Size, weight, power source, and adapter requirements.
- Setup interface, firmware support, and the controls available without opening a browser.
- Price and availability for your region at the time you buy.
GL.iNet’s rated wireless and VPN figures and TechRadar’s review measurements come from different sources and conditions, so they are not a head-to-head comparison. Current competitor prices and normalized competitor test results are not established by the cited material.
Verdict: is the GL.iNet Slate 7 worth it?
The Slate 7 is worth considering if you want a compact, USB-C-powered Wi-Fi 7 travel router with two 2.5G Ethernet ports, visible hands-on controls, and substantial manufacturer-stated WireGuard client capacity. Its value is clearest for travelers who will use those connectivity and VPN features, rather than people seeking a battery-powered cellular hotspot or an effortless solution for every hotel login. Decide based on your upstream connection, need for wired networking, VPN protocol and mode, power access, and willingness to configure a router—not the combined 3600 Mbps label alone.
