Ginkgo Bioworks Announced a Deal With Eli Lilly. Then Its Shares Doubled

The stock is Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings (NYSE: DNA). In September 2026, Ginkgo Datapoints agreed to bring biological data-generation services into Eli Lilly’s TuneLab AI/ML drug-discovery platform. A financial-news article later said Ginkgo shares doubled, but the available reporting does not provide the dates or price series needed to verify that return independently—and it does not establish that the deal caused the move.

What is the company behind the headline?

Ginkgo Bioworks is a biotechnology services company, not a drugmaker whose product is identified in this announcement. Its 2025 annual report describes two operating businesses: cell engineering, which provides biological research and development services, and biosecurity, which provides services to identify, monitor, prevent, mitigate, and respond to biological threats. A July 2026 company announcement filed with the SEC describes autonomous laboratories and cloud-lab contract research services offered through Datapoints and Solutions.

That service model helps explain the reported Lilly arrangement: Ginkgo is contributing biological data-generation services to a discovery platform, rather than announcing a completed medicine or a clinical result. (Ginkgo 2025 annual report; July 2026 company announcement)

What was the Eli Lilly deal?

According to a September 16, 2026 report, Ginkgo Datapoints entered an agreement with Lilly TuneLab, Lilly’s collaborative AI/ML drug-discovery platform. The reported work is to integrate Ginkgo’s biological data-generation services into the TuneLab network. (September 2026 report on the collaboration)

The materials describing the arrangement characterize it as a commercial services collaboration. They do not establish an acquisition, an equity investment, or a clinical partnership. They also do not disclose financial terms, exclusivity, research targets, milestones, or expected revenue contribution. The available account does not report that the work has produced a drug candidate or clinical result.

Why did Ginkgo shares reportedly double?

The October 5, 2026 Motley Fool article identified Ginkgo and said its shares doubled after the Lilly news. That is the source for the headline’s reported share move. The article does not supply a comparison window or dated prices, so the exact return cannot be reconstructed from the available account. (The Motley Fool’s October 5, 2026 article)

The timing links investor interest with the announcement, but timing alone does not prove the collaboration caused the share-price movement. A commercial relationship with Lilly may have attracted attention to Ginkgo’s data-generation services and their possible role in AI-assisted discovery; the disclosed information does not quantify the deal’s economics or establish how much it contributed to the stock move.

Does the partnership make Ginkgo profitable?

No. Ginkgo’s 2025 annual report recorded a net loss of $312.763 million. It reported $132.7 million in cell engineering revenue and $37.4 million in biosecurity revenue for 2025. Both segments’ revenue declined from 2024: cell engineering from $174.0 million and biosecurity from $53.1 million. The filing attributes the declines to contract-specific and government-program factors. These are historical results for the year ended December 31, 2025, not a measure of performance in October 2026. (Ginkgo 2025 annual report)

At December 31, 2025, the company reported $167.2 million in cash and cash equivalents and $255.4 million in marketable securities. Those year-end balances provide context for its financial position at that date, but they do not establish current liquidity or the resources available for future operations.

What investors should look for next

The announcement establishes a service role, not the commercial or scientific outcomes investors may ultimately want to assess. Useful follow-up evidence would include:

  • Whether Ginkgo or Lilly discloses the agreement’s economics, revenue recognition, or any milestones.
  • Whether the arrangement is exclusive or applies to defined research targets.
  • Whether the collaboration produces results that advance beyond data generation into validated discovery or preclinical work.
  • Whether Ginkgo’s reported revenue and costs show that it can deliver its services sustainably.

A separate Ginkgo collaboration with Solvay concerns sustainable chemicals and materials, including an initial focus on sustainable biopolymers and Solvay’s planned acquisition of a Ginkgo laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It illustrates a different partnership area and should not be treated as evidence about the scope or economics of the Lilly agreement. (Solvay announcement)
