Is GIMP free?
Yes. The GIMP Project distributes the image editor under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later, and provides official downloads at no charge. The project says GIMP does not restrict the kind of work you produce with it, so commercial use is allowed. See the GIMP Project’s overview and its official documentation for more about the software.

- Go directly to the official GIMP downloads page.
- Choose the package for your operating system. The page offers options for Linux, Windows, and macOS; the exact packages shown may vary by platform and change over time.
- Check the page’s current operating-system requirements before installing.
- If a SHA256 hash is published for your package, use the instructions on the downloads page to verify the file. Do not rely on an old hash copied from another page.
As of October 7, 2026, the downloads page listed GIMP 3.2.6, released September 10, 2026, as the current stable version. The release announcement described Linux AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap packages; a Windows universal installer and Microsoft Store option; and macOS DMG downloads for Intel and Apple silicon. Because releases and package choices change, check the live downloads page rather than treating these details as permanent.

Is a paid third-party GIMP copy necessarily a scam?
No. The GIMP Project says copies may legally be sold under the GPL when the applicable license and source-code conditions are met. A charge alone does not prove that an offer is unlawful or fraudulent. But the project does not vouch for third-party packages, which may contain extra software or modified code.
Before considering a paid offer, check whether it is linked from gimp.org, whether the seller explains what additional value the payment provides, whether it identifies the package version and supported operating system, and whether it provides the license and source-code information required for redistribution. If you only want GIMP itself, the project’s download page is the direct, free option.

Do you need to buy a GIMP book?
No. A book or other instructional material is optional; it is not required to download or use the editor. The project FAQ notes that many GIMP books have been published, but it does not endorse a particular current title or listing. If you want structured instruction, choose learning material separately from the software download.
Can I use GIMP commercially?
Yes. The GIMP Project says its software places no restrictions on the kind of work users produce with it, including commercial work. This describes using GIMP to create work; distributing copies of GIMP itself is governed by the GPL.

What does the GPL mean if I redistribute GIMP?
GIMP is distributed under GPL version 3 or later. If you redistribute copies, the relevant license obligations apply, including conditions concerning the license and source code. A third-party seller’s right to charge does not remove those obligations. Consult the project’s official documentation and the license accompanying the software for the terms that apply to your situation.

The GIMP Project FAQ says the program is downloaded more than 50,000 times a day and used by millions of people worldwide. The FAQ does not give a publication year for that statistic, and it is a project-reported figure rather than an independently audited count.
