The figures suggest strong demand for gimbal cameras, but they do not prove that gimbals outsold all compact or point-and-shoot cameras: the periods, categories and reporting coverage differ.
What the shipment figures show
IDC’s September 23, 2026 announcement estimates nearly 2.8 million gimbal-camera shipments worldwide in Q2 2026, an 87% increase from the same quarter a year earlier. Gimbals were the largest of the three handheld smart camera categories IDC tracks. Across all three categories combined, shipments exceeded 5.88 million, up 57% year over year.

For comparison, the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) reported 2,436,911 shipments of built-in-lens digital cameras during calendar 2025. That was 129.6% of the 2024 total. Subtracting the CIPA figure from IDC’s rounded “nearly 2.8 million” estimate yields a difference of roughly half a million units, not an exact count.

Why this is not a direct compact-camera comparison
The numbers cover different time spans: one quarter for gimbal cameras versus an entire year for built-in-lens cameras. They also come from different reporting systems. IDC’s handheld smart camera market tracker covers consumer portable imaging devices that can be handheld, have computing capability and electronic or optical stabilization, and record at least 2K resolution. Its categories include gimbal cameras, action cameras and panoramic cameras. CIPA’s “built-in-lens” label is not a count specifically of pocket point-and-shoot models.
That means the comparison is useful as a scale-and-momentum signal, not as a like-for-like tally of every gimbal camera against every compact camera. Shipment totals measure products shipped into the market, not how many people own or use each type, and the available figures do not establish total market popularity.

What counts as a gimbal camera?
In IDC’s classification, gimbal cameras are one kind of handheld smart camera. A familiar example is the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, a compact camera built around a mechanical gimbal. The example helps explain the category, but IDC’s shipment data does not report sales for that particular model.
Gimbals should not be conflated with the other product types in IDC’s tracker. Action cameras are a separate category, as are panoramic or 360 cameras. Their inclusion in the wider handheld smart camera total does not make their shipment figures interchangeable with gimbal-camera shipments.

How the wider handheld-camera market is changing
IDC’s Q2 2026 announcement puts action-camera shipments above 2.55 million, up 47% year over year, and panoramic-camera shipments above 530,000, up 4%. Gimbals led those three categories in the quarter. IDC also reported that DJI held 73% of shipments across the combined handheld smart camera market and Insta360 held 20%; those shares are not gimbal-only market shares.
IDC projects that the wider handheld smart camera market could approach 41 million units annually by 2030, with a five-year compound annual growth rate near 20%. This is a forecast, not an observed shipment result. IDC also reported a 49% year-over-year decline for GoPro’s action-camera category; that figure should not be read as a decline in every GoPro product or in the company’s total revenue.

What the numbers mean for camera buyers
The shipment comparison points to a fast-growing gimbal segment, but it cannot tell an individual buyer which camera is best. The useful distinction is how each device handles movement and framing: gimbal cameras use a stabilizing mechanism suited to handheld moving footage, while action and 360 cameras are tracked as separate categories with different formats and use cases. Fixed-lens compact cameras belong to a different market label in CIPA’s figures. The cited market announcements do not provide controlled image-quality tests or a detailed product-spec comparison, so choosing between them requires looking at the specific camera and the kind of photos or video you want to make.
For a product search, “handheld gimbal camera” is a more precise query than “compact camera.” The category’s shipment growth is evidence of rising market momentum, not proof that gimbals have replaced traditional compacts.
