GIFT Nifty was almost unchanged at 22,642.5 around 8 a.m. on Thursday, 15 October 2026, pointing to a muted opening for India’s benchmark indexes despite steep overnight losses in the United States and Asia. The signal reflects futures positioning before the cash market opens—not a guarantee that the Sensex and Nifty will remain flat once domestic orders, oil prices and foreign flows are reflected.
What the flat GIFT Nifty reading means
India’s previous session ended with the Sensex at 72,781.89, down 251.89 points (0.34%), and the Nifty at 22,622.70, down 99.25 points (0.44%). The near-flat GIFT Nifty indication suggests that early Indian futures trading was absorbing the overnight shock without pricing an immediate, equivalent cash-market fall.

GIFT Nifty trades outside regular NSE cash-market hours and primarily captures overnight risk sentiment. The eventual opening can differ because Indian investors place fresh orders after local news, domestic sector weights are not identical to overseas indexes, and futures can trade at a premium or discount to the cash index. Prices can also change materially between the 8 a.m. reading and the opening auction.

Why global markets sold off
US inflation exceeded expectations
US consumer-price inflation rose 3.7% year over year in September 2026, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics figure reported by Moneycontrol. That was higher than August’s 3.4% rate and the 3.6% market expectation. The surprise revived concern that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates elevated for longer or consider additional tightening.
#1 Best Overall
Higher expected rates generally reduce the present value investors assign to future corporate earnings. Technology and other growth companies, whose valuations depend heavily on profits expected years ahead, are especially sensitive. A renewed rise in US bond yields can therefore pressure global technology shares and the technology-heavy parts of emerging-market indexes, including India’s information-technology sector.
Overnight losses were broad
| Market or benchmark | Reported move |
|---|---|
| MSCI Asia Pacific Index | Down 2.7% |
| South Korea’s Kospi | Down 7.6% |
| Nikkei futures | Down 4.8% |
| Hang Seng | Down 0.9% |
| Shanghai Composite | Down 1.2% |
| S&P 500 | Down 1.11% |
| Nasdaq Composite | Down 1.88% |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Down 0.09% |
The concentration of losses in the Kospi and Nasdaq is significant for Indian traders because both markets have large technology and semiconductor exposures. A global de-risking wave can affect Indian IT shares through lower overseas technology valuations, weaker risk appetite among foreign investors and concerns about client technology spending, even when the underlying Indian companies have not issued new guidance.

Oil adds an India-specific risk
| Crude benchmark | Reported price |
|---|---|
| Brent | $104.94 per barrel |
| WTI | $93.91 per barrel |
Both benchmarks edged down in the reported session, but prices remained high and Middle East supply disruptions kept the possibility of a prolonged surge alive. India imports most of its crude, so an extended period of expensive oil can widen the import bill, increase imported inflation and pressure the rupee. It can also squeeze fuel-sensitive industries and household purchasing power. A modest one-session decline in crude does not remove that broader risk.
Foreign selling versus domestic support
| Investor group | Previous-session equity flow |
|---|---|
| Foreign institutional investors | Sold about ₹1,857 crore |
| Domestic institutions | Bought about ₹2,670 crore |
Domestic institutional buying exceeded foreign sales in the previous session, providing a buffer against the sell-off. That support can help explain why the GIFT Nifty signal was less negative than overseas headlines. It does not guarantee stability: foreign flows can accelerate when US rate expectations, the dollar, emerging-market risk or oil prices move sharply, while domestic buying may be concentrated in particular sectors or funds.
How the overseas shock could reach Indian sectors
Information technology and other growth shares
These shares are exposed to changes in US discount rates and global technology multiples. A higher-for-longer Federal Reserve outlook can compress valuations even without an immediate change in company earnings. Export-oriented companies may also face currency effects if the US dollar strengthens against the rupee.
Energy users and consumer sectors
Persistently expensive crude raises input and transport costs. Companies with limited pricing power may see margins or demand come under pressure if those costs pass through to customers.
Rank #4
Financials and domestically driven companies
These groups can respond differently from export technology stocks. Local liquidity, domestic institutional purchases, credit growth and expectations for Indian interest rates may cushion them, although a broad risk-off session can still pull down otherwise resilient shares.

- Cash-market opening: Compare the Sensex and Nifty opening auction with the earlier GIFT Nifty indication; the two are signals from different markets and times.
- Banking and technology leadership: Check whether declines are concentrated in rate-sensitive technology stocks or spreading to banks, industrials and consumer shares.
- Crude and the rupee: Watch Brent, WTI and the rupee together. A renewed oil jump combined with a weaker rupee would increase imported-inflation concerns.
- Foreign and domestic flows: Track exchange-published institutional flow data as it becomes available rather than assuming that the previous session’s buying pattern will repeat.
- US-rate expectations: Monitor Treasury yields and market pricing for Federal Reserve decisions. The 3.7% inflation reading changes expectations; it does not by itself determine the Fed’s next move.
Possible paths for the session
Muted open followed by selective buying
If domestic institutions continue absorbing supply and oil remains contained, the indexes could open near the futures indication while investors rotate toward domestically driven sectors.
Best Value
Late pressure after a stable open
If US-rate concerns push global yields higher, foreign selling resumes or Asian losses deepen, Indian shares could weaken after the opening rather than at the open.
Broader risk-off decline
A simultaneous rise in crude, a weaker rupee and renewed technology selling would make the flat futures signal a poor guide to the full session. The cash market, not the pre-open futures quote, establishes the day’s realized direction.
How to interpret this pre-open report
Moneycontrol’s report was published before the Indian cash market opened. GIFT Nifty at 22,642.5 is therefore a time-stamped indication of overnight positioning, not a closing forecast. Intraday prices, oil, institutional flows and interest-rate expectations can change quickly; readers should check later realized prices before treating the morning signal as the day’s result.
