GIFT Nifty pointed to a mildly positive start for the Sensex and Nifty on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, but the signal was not a guarantee of the opening or the day’s direction. Moneycontrol reported the futures index at 22,425 around 8 a.m. IST, up 55 points, or 0.25%. Sharp early losses across Asian markets, elevated crude prices and domestic inflation concerns were potential obstacles to gains.

What the pre-market signal showed

At around 8 a.m. IST on October 13, Moneycontrol put GIFT Nifty at 22,425, 55 points or 0.25% higher. That modest rise suggested a positive opening bias for Indian equities; it did not confirm where the cash market would open or how either index would trade during the session.

The futures cue followed a weak Monday session. At the October 12 close, the Sensex stood at 71,924.68, down 547.65 points (0.76%), while the Nifty closed at 22,363.35, down 157.10 points (0.70%), according to Moneycontrol.

Why Asian markets were a counterweight

Moneycontrol reported broad losses in early Asian trading on October 13: MSCI’s Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan was down more than 2%, South Korea’s Kospi had fallen 6%, and Japan’s Nikkei was down 2.6%. These are time-specific market snapshots, not full-session results.

The regional declines made the Indian futures signal look more tentative. They showed that the positive GIFT Nifty reading was not matched by the direction of several major Asian equity markets at that point in the morning.

Inflation and interest rates remained domestic risks

Moneycontrol reported September retail inflation at 5.54%, describing it as higher than expected and close to the 6% upper tolerance limit. MoSPI’s official release calendar lists the September 2026 CPI release on October 12, but the detailed figure was not visible in the official material available here; the 5.54% rate should therefore be treated as Moneycontrol’s reported figure.

Rank #2

The report also described a tighter rate backdrop: it said the Reserve Bank of India had raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% earlier in October and shifted to calibrated tightening. Higher inflation and tighter policy expectations can weigh on sentiment, but the available figures do not establish that either factor caused a particular index move on October 13.

Oil prices and Middle East tensions added uncertainty

In Asian trading, Moneycontrol reported Brent crude at $106.04 a barrel and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) at $93.27. The report said oil had eased after rising in the previous session, while Middle East tensions and concerns about supply remained in focus. These prices are volatile snapshots, not fixed levels or a forecast.

For Indian equities, crude prices and supply risks were part of the day’s uncertainty alongside inflation and the regional sell-off. The reported information does not isolate how much any one of these pressures might affect the Sensex or Nifty.

How to read the mixed signals

  • Near-term cue: GIFT Nifty’s 0.25% rise suggested a mildly positive pre-open bias around 8 a.m. IST.
  • Recent context: Both benchmark indices had fallen at the October 12 close.
  • External pressure: Major Asian markets were sharply lower in early trading.
  • Domestic and commodity risks: Moneycontrol highlighted above-expected inflation, a tighter rate backdrop, elevated oil prices and Middle East supply concerns.

These indicators describe the setup ahead of the October 13 open, not the eventual market outcome. The GIFT Nifty reading should be understood as a directional signal, with the other reported conditions explaining why that signal could be fragile.
