The cost and rules depend first on what you buy: an unsponsored depository receipt, an overseas-security brokerage position, or units in an IFSC fund. Compare the instrument, all funding and trading charges, and its tax and reporting treatment—not just the advertised brokerage.
This guide is for Indian residents comparing routes to U.S.-stock exposure through GIFT City’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). The figures and rules below reflect provider and official guidance reviewed as of October 7, 2026; fees, product terms, and tax rules can change.
What do you own through each GIFT City route?
The name of the platform does not by itself tell you whether you own a U.S. share. Identify the legal instrument and ownership chain before comparing prices: liquidity, custody, exit options, tax treatment, and reporting can differ.

| Route | What the investor holds | What to check before investing |
|---|---|---|
| NSE IX U.S.-stock offering | The offering is described as unsponsored depository receipts (UDRs) linked to selected U.S. stocks. A UDR is not automatically the same as holding the underlying U.S. share directly in a U.S. brokerage account. | Check the current underlying list, trading hours, liquidity and bid–ask spread, custody and settlement chain, exchange charges, and whether and how receipts can be converted, cancelled, or transferred. HDFC GIFT City Bank’s FAQ described 50 UDR names when reviewed; availability can change. |
| Global-access brokerage platform | A platform-mediated position in overseas securities such as U.S.-listed stocks or ETFs; the exact account and custody arrangement depends on the provider. | Confirm which instruments are available, where they are held, applicable account terms, and the process and cost to sell, withdraw, or transfer holdings. |
| IFSC global-equity fund | Units in a fund, not direct ownership of each underlying share. Fund expenses and the tax accounting applied at fund level are distinct from direct-security ownership. | Read the current offer document for strategy, benchmark, holdings, total expense ratio (TER), subscription and redemption rules, and how distributions or redemptions are treated for you. |
What fees can you expect?
Brokerage is only one line in the cost of investing. A complete comparison should include the provider’s current written tariff and, where relevant, exchange and settlement charges, custody, bank remittance, currency conversion, withdrawal, and any other account or transaction fees. Do not treat the sample brokerage figures below as an all-in cost or as a standard GIFT City tariff.
| Provider or product | Published charge reviewed | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Anand Rathi GIFT City | 0.25% of trade value, subject to a USD 1 minimum per executed order, for U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. | Provider-published brokerage; other charges and the customer’s effective FX rate are separate. |
| Geojit IFSC | 0.25% brokerage for U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. | Provider-published brokerage; confirm the live schedule and other applicable charges. |
| DSP IFSC global-equity fund | Class A (Regular): TER up to 1.75%; Class B (Direct): TER up to 1%. Both classes list a minimum initial subscription of USD 5,000 and above; additional subscription is USD 500. | These are DSP’s product-page figures reviewed in 2026. DSP describes TER as including management, trusteeship, and operating expenses. Verify the current offer documents; these figures do not apply to other funds or brokerage routes. |
HDFC GIFT City Bank’s FAQ states that transactions on IFSC exchanges are exempt from stamp duty and securities transaction tax (STT). Treat that as a specific statement about IFSC-exchange transactions, not a blanket exemption for unrelated taxes, platform charges, or fund products; confirm current applicability and any other exchange or settlement charges.
#1 Best Overall
- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
How much does currency conversion cost?
There is no single verified INR/USD rate or conversion charge for every GIFT City route. The customer rate and any spread or remittance fee depend on the bank or provider, amount, and timing. A quoted mid-market rate is a reference point, not necessarily the rate you will receive.
Before funding an account, ask the provider or bank for an illustrative quote for your exact amount and ask:

Rank #2
- What exact INR amount will be debited and how much USD will be credited?
- Is there a separate bank, transfer, or remittance charge, and is it fixed or percentage-based?
- What reference rate and timestamp are used to set the customer rate?
- Will currency be converted again when you withdraw, and what rate and charges will apply then?
- If funds or proceeds remain in a foreign-currency account, what are the account terms and permitted uses?
To estimate the FX spread, compare the provider’s customer rate with a reference rate from the same time: divide the difference by the reference rate and express the result as a percentage. Keep fixed transfer charges separate so the percentage spread does not hide them. RBI rules provide for specified remittances to IFSC for permitted financial services or products and certain foreign-jurisdiction transactions through IFSC foreign-currency accounts; they do not make every transfer or use automatically permissible.
What is the LRS limit for an Indian resident?
The Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) permits resident individuals to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year (April–March) for permitted current- or capital-account transactions, or a combination of them. This is a regulatory ceiling, not confirmation that every product, account, or purpose is eligible. Check the current RBI direction and your authorised dealer bank’s requirements for the specific remittance.
How do Indian tax and foreign-asset reporting work?
Tax treatment depends on your residence status, the instrument you hold, the income or gain, the relevant tax year, and current law. Direct shares, UDRs, fund units, dividends, and distributions should not be assumed to receive identical treatment. A provider’s fund-level calculation is not automatically your investor-level tax rate.
Return form and foreign-asset disclosure
The Income Tax Department’s guidance for assessment year 2026–27 says a resident with a foreign asset or foreign-source income cannot file ITR-1. Its foreign-asset guidance describes Schedule FA disclosure for residents. The applicable form and reporting depend on the current year’s instructions, your residence classification, and the instrument and ownership or beneficial-ownership arrangements; check the current return instructions and obtain tax advice for your circumstances.

DSP’s product page states that 20% tax collected at source (TCS) applies to the portion of an amount remitted abroad exceeding INR 10 lakh in a financial year. That is DSP’s presentation, not a universal statement of current LRS TCS rules: category, threshold, and rate must be checked against current law and bank instructions.
DSP also publishes fund-level rates of 14.95% for long-term capital gains after a holding period of more than 24 months, 42.744% for short-term gains at 24 months or less, and 35.88% for dividend or income from units. The same page says its published NAV is after applicable taxes and that indexation was discontinued from July 23, 2024. These are DSP’s disclosures for its fund, not a general calculation of an investor’s tax on U.S. stocks, UDRs, or another fund. Confirm current scheme documents and tax law with a qualified adviser.

Can U.S. tax or withholding apply?
Yes, it can depend on the security and custody or ownership chain; a GIFT City account does not by itself establish that U.S. tax or withholding is avoided. IRS Publication 519 (2025) says dividends from domestic corporations paid to nonresident aliens are generally subject to 30% U.S. tax or a lower treaty rate. It also says capital gains generally are not taxable when the individual’s presence in the United States is under 183 days, subject to exceptions. These general rules do not settle the treatment of every UDR, IFSC fund, or custody arrangement. Determine the actual instrument and seek current U.S.–India tax advice for your facts.
Quick Recap
How to compare routes before you fund an account
- Identify the instrument. Ask whether you will hold a UDR, an overseas-security position, or fund units, and request the relevant account, custody, or scheme documents.
- Get a written tariff. Request brokerage, minimum order charges, exchange and settlement fees, custody, transfer, withdrawal, and any other applicable charges.
- Request an exact FX quote. Compare the INR debit and USD credit with a same-time reference rate, and list fixed remittance fees separately.
- Check how you can exit. Confirm sale, redemption, receipt cancellation or conversion, transfer, settlement timing, and where proceeds will be held.
- Check tax and reporting for your facts. Review current Indian return instructions and the product’s tax documents; establish whether U.S. withholding or other rules apply to the actual ownership chain.
