Neither route is automatically cheaper, safer or more tax-efficient. The real differences are the regulated entity and account structure, the markets and securities available, the funding process and the full set of charges. For Indian residents, both routes may involve the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), whose shared annual limit is USD 250,000 per financial year—not a separate allowance for each platform.
What “GIFT City investing” and an Indian broker’s global account mean
GIFT City is home to an International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), where providers may offer investment services through entities regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA). It is not one uniform account or product: the provider’s legal entity, authorisation, contract and custody arrangements determine what an investor actually receives.

An Indian broker’s international account may instead connect the customer to a separate overseas broker. For example, ICICI Direct says its Global Investment account is opened with Interactive Brokers LLC, which it identifies as the executing and clearing broker and global custodian. That is an example of one provider’s structure, not a description of every Indian broker’s international service.

That permission does not establish that every IFSC investing service uses the same account structure. IFSCA’s legal index also lists a June 23, 2025 amendment to directions governing these accounts, so investors should consult the current directions and the provider’s own terms.

How the routes compare
| What to compare | GIFT City / IFSC provider | Indian broker’s international account |
|---|---|---|
| Account and regulated entity | May involve an IFSC-regulated provider and, where applicable, a foreign-currency account with an IFSC Banking Unit. Confirm the contracting entity, authorisation and account terms. | May involve a foreign partner holding or servicing the account. ICICI Direct says its Global Investment account is with Interactive Brokers LLC, its executing and clearing broker and global custodian. |
| Example market access | INDmoney’s cited service page advertises US stocks and global ETFs. | ICICI Direct’s FAQ lists securities listed in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. |
| Funding framework | Resident individuals’ relevant remittances remain subject to LRS. An IFSC account does not create another annual LRS limit. | Relevant remittances remain subject to the same LRS framework. Check the provider’s funding workflow and bank charges. |
| Pricing example | INDmoney advertises brokerage of 0.25% subject to a ceiling and no annual maintenance or account fee. These are provider-stated terms; check the live tariff for the applicable ceiling and other costs. | ICICI Direct publishes transaction-charge information. Obtain its current fee schedule and include any partner, currency-conversion and funding costs. |
| Eligibility | Check the named provider’s current onboarding rules, residency requirements and service availability. | ICICI Direct says residents of India, NRIs and certain corporates can use its facility subject to stated conditions. Verify whether you qualify under the current terms. |
| Tax, custody and protections | Not established by account location alone; check the actual account documents and applicable official guidance. | Not established by account location alone; check the overseas broker relationship, custody terms and applicable official guidance. |
The market lists above are examples from the named providers, not a complete or like-for-like comparison of available exchanges, instruments or order types. Provider features and terms can change.
How LRS affects both choices
The RBI states that a resident individual may remit up to USD 250,000 in a financial year under LRS. The ceiling is shared across relevant permitted remittances; it is not USD 250,000 for each broker, account or investment route. The RBI’s LRS description also includes specified current-account remittances within the framework, so do not treat the full ceiling as a dedicated foreign-investment budget.

Before funding either route, check your total relevant remittances for the financial year and confirm the sending bank’s documentation, process and charges. The provider’s funding instructions do not replace the RBI rules or your bank’s requirements.

A quoted brokerage rate or zero account-maintenance fee does not show what a round trip will cost. Compare the current tariff and funding terms for the specific account you plan to open, including:

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
- Brokerage and any minimum, cap or conditions attached to a quoted rate.
- The currency-conversion rate and any FX spread or conversion fee.
- Bank and remittance charges for sending funds.
- Custody, platform, exchange, regulatory or other transaction charges that apply to the account and security.
- Withdrawal costs, including the cost of converting proceeds and bringing funds back.
The available provider information does not establish a complete, like-for-like cost calculation for the two routes. A useful comparison is to request or calculate the total cost of the same intended transaction—including funding and withdrawal—not just the buy-side brokerage.
Check the account structure before transferring money
The provider’s brand name does not by itself tell you who legally holds the account or securities. Read the account agreement and identify:
Rank #4
- The entity you contract with and the regulator that authorises it for the service offered.
- Where the account is maintained and which bank or broker receives the funds.
- How your beneficial ownership in each security is recorded, and the identity and role of any custodian or sub-custodian.
- What the agreement says about asset segregation, platform or custodian failure, complaints and available investor-protection arrangements.
- Whether the service supports the exchanges, securities, order types and actions you need.
Regulation of a provider is relevant, but it does not, on its own, establish the precise custody arrangement, insolvency treatment or remedy available to a particular customer. Those depend on the entity, account documents and applicable rules.
Tax and reporting require a separate check
The account’s location does not by itself determine your tax treatment or remove reporting duties. The available information does not settle a complete tax comparison between an IFSC account and an Indian broker’s overseas-partner account, including any foreign tax or reporting obligations. Before investing, verify the current Indian requirements and any relevant foreign rules for your residency, account and holdings, using official guidance and qualified advice where needed.

A practical way to choose
- Confirm eligibility. Check your residency status against the specific provider’s current onboarding criteria.
- Map the funding route. Ask which bank and account receive your remittance, what documents are required, what charges apply and how the transaction counts toward your LRS usage.
- Name the legal entities. Record the contracting provider, the account-holding entity, the broker and the custodian, then confirm each role in the agreement.
- Check the investment menu. Compare the actual exchanges, securities and order features available to you rather than relying on a general “global investing” label.
- Price the full transaction. Include brokerage, FX, remittance, custody and withdrawal costs in the same calculation.
- Verify tax and protections. Read the account terms and consult current official guidance for the relevant jurisdictions before relying on a tax or investor-protection claim.
Use this process to compare specific accounts, not broad labels. For instance, the cited INDmoney materials describe an IFSC service for US stocks and global ETFs, while ICICI Direct describes an account with Interactive Brokers LLC and lists six markets in its FAQ. Those examples do not establish that either provider is the best fit or that other services use the same structures.
