Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone PS5 adventure set about 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. It shifts the story from Jin Sakai on Tsushima to a new hero, Atsu, in 1600s Ezo, around present-day Hokkaido’s Mount Yōtei. The games share an open-world action-adventure foundation, but Jin does not appear in Yōtei, and you do not need to play Tsushima first.

Ghost of Yōtei vs. Ghost of Tsushima at a glance

What differs Ghost of Tsushima Ghost of Yōtei
Story relationship Introduces Jin Sakai and his story. A standalone story, not a direct continuation of Jin’s plot; Jin does not feature, according to PlayStation’s game page.
Time and place Set on Tsushima. Set about 300 years later, in 1600s rural Japan, in Ezo around Mount Yōtei, an area now known as Hokkaido. Sony describes the time jump in its launch announcement; Sucker Punch identifies the region in its reveal.
Main character Jin Sakai. Atsu, a new protagonist with a new story.
Design and combat Establishes the series’ open-world action-adventure foundation. Builds on that foundation with new weapons, mechanics, and improvements; official announcements do not support treating every mechanic as wholly new.
Platform and release Platform availability depends on the specific edition. Launched exclusively on PS5 on October 2, 2025, according to PlayStation.

Is Ghost of Yōtei a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?

It is connected to Tsushima as an evolution of its design and mythos, not as a direct sequel to Jin’s story. PlayStation calls Yōtei a standalone experience and explicitly says Jin Sakai does not feature. The roughly 300-year gap also places the new story in a different historical period.

That means you can follow Yōtei’s central story without knowing what happened to Jin. Playing Tsushima first may help you recognize the shared approach to open-world action and the series’ broader identity, but it is not a prerequisite.

How do the setting and protagonists differ?

From Tsushima to Ezo

Tsushima takes place on the island of Tsushima; Yōtei moves north to Ezo, the historical name for the region associated with modern-day Hokkaido. Its story unfolds around Mount Yōtei in 1600s rural Japan. “Ezo” is the period setting name, not a claim that the game takes place in a modern administrative region called Ezo.

From Jin Sakai to Atsu

Tsushima centers on Jin Sakai. Yōtei introduces Atsu as its new hero, with a separate story and motivation. Sucker Punch described its direction as “a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore” in its 2024 announcement.

The studio frames Atsu’s journey as “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance,” in the words of Sucker Punch co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming in Sony’s launch announcement. That is the studio’s description of the story’s themes, rather than a comparison of the games’ quality.

What changes in gameplay?

Yōtei retains the broad open-world action-adventure approach associated with Tsushima while extending it with new weapons and mechanics. Sucker Punch says it built on the earlier game’s visual foundation and introduced gameplay improvements. Its April 2025 update also points to Atsu’s weapons and allies, as well as a mechanic that lets players glimpse her past.

The documented difference is an evolution, not a wholesale replacement of the formula. The official announcements cited here do not establish a complete weapon-by-weapon or system-by-system comparison, so specific claims about every combat or exploration mechanic should be treated cautiously.

Should you play Ghost of Tsushima first?

No—play order is up to you. Choose Tsushima first if you want to experience Jin’s story before moving to another game in the same design lineage. Start with Yōtei if you are more interested in Atsu, Ezo, or the newer PS5 release; its story stands on its own.

If you are choosing which game to get, base the decision on the protagonist, setting, and platform that interest you. Yōtei launched for PS5; Tsushima’s platform compatibility varies by edition, so check the exact edition and regional listing before buying.
