The expansion adds a past-and-present narrative, the Ashoro Foothills, new enemies and heavy weapons, plus abilities and gear. Whether that is enough depends on how much you enjoyed exploring the base game.
What Echoes of Sekigahara adds
The expansion moves between two periods in Atsu’s life: her time on the mainland around the Battle of Sekigahara and the present-day story in Ezo. Nagato, a figure from her past who fought alongside her, arrives in Ezo. Meanwhile, the Vipers—poachers loyal to the deceased Snake—have taken control of the previously unseen Ashoro Foothills.

The new area is the clearest reason to return. The expansion also adds enemy types, heavy weapons, mythic tales, abilities, armor sets, and cosmetics. Its premise gives Atsu’s history a more direct role in the new adventure rather than treating the add-on as only another stretch of open-world activities.
How it feels to return to Ezo
Landscape and presentation
The scenery remains one of the series’ strongest draws. GamesRadar+ praised the world’s visual appeal and the rewards of exploring it, while Tom’s Guide characterized the game as a polished, cinematic open-world experience. The Ashoro Foothills give returning players a new landscape to move through, and the expansion’s shifts between past and present offer a change in narrative perspective.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
That praise comes with a qualification: GamesRadar+ felt the world could be so carefully curated that discovery lost some of its spontaneity. This is a reviewer’s assessment, not a universal response, but it points to a real trade-off in the design. A world can be beautiful and rewarding to traverse while still making its activities and discoveries feel deliberately arranged.
Combat and weapons
Combat is another reason the return may appeal. Tom’s Guide praised the fighting, and the expansion’s new enemy types and heavy weapons broaden the ingredients available for encounters. The announced details do not establish how much those additions change the underlying combat system, so they are best understood as new options and matchups rather than proof of a wholesale redesign.

- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Mission rhythm and traversal
The familiar structure may be more noticeable than the new content. Tom’s Guide cautioned that the formula can feel familiar to players of modern open-world games, especially those who played Ghost of Tsushima or recent Assassin’s Creed games. GamesRadar+ also found some pacing, climbing, and NPC-following sequences awkward or dated. Those points describe the base game’s design as assessed by those outlets; they are useful context for judging whether another journey in the same world sounds appealing.
Does the expansion make Atsu’s story worth continuing?
The story connects Atsu’s mainland past to her present in Ezo, with Nagato’s arrival and the Vipers’ control of the foothills setting up the new conflict. That structure gives the expansion a more personal frame than a simple map extension. Sony describes the base game as a standalone story about Atsu, a mercenary whose family was killed, and Sucker Punch’s stated intent was to tell a story that reaches beyond vengeance toward healing and redemption. That is the studio’s framing, not a critical verdict on how successfully the expansion achieves it.

- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Roam vast countryside and expansive terrain to encounter rich characters, discover ancient landmarks and uncover the hidden beauty of Tsushima.
- The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
- Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
- Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
- A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.
For players invested in Atsu, the historical thread around Sekigahara is a meaningful hook. For players mainly seeking a radically different kind of open-world game, the announced additions do not establish that the expansion changes the series’ basic rhythm.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Echoes of Sekigahara worth playing?
It is most tempting for players who want another focused story in Ezo, enjoy the game’s combat, and value its landscapes enough to accept familiar exploration and mission patterns. The new area, historical perspective, enemies, weapons, and gear give the return concrete reasons to exist. If curated activities, traversal friction, or familiar open-world conventions were the main drawbacks for you in the base game, the expansion’s announced content may not answer those complaints.

Do you need the base game, and which edition includes it?
Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5 game, and Sony describes the base game as a standalone adventure with a new protagonist, Atsu, set in rural Japan in the 1600s, about 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. The US PlayStation Store Complete Edition listing includes Echoes of Sekigahara, the Most Wanted combat survival mode, and the cooperative Ghost of Yōtei Legends mode. The listing says expansion content requires patch v2.0 or later, an internet connection, and a PlayStation account to download. Check the current listing for your region before buying: edition contents and availability can differ, and the cited inclusion is for the US digital listing.

Sucker Punch’s September 3, 2026 announcement described a global patch on October 1, with availability on October 2 in some territories. Those dates are rollout details, not a guarantee of current access in every region. The Complete Edition is the clearest documented option in the cited US listing for getting the expansion with the base game; the source does not establish that every regional edition or standalone purchase has the same terms.
