Owners of the original game can instead buy a separate upgrade for the new expansion and mode. The additions broaden the game, but they do not fundamentally change its open-world action-adventure formula.
What is in Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition?
Sucker Punch announced the Complete Edition on August 12, 2026. It brings together the base game and its paid additions, alongside Digital Deluxe content. The UK PlayStation Store listing gives this itemized package:

These are platform feature claims, not independent performance measurements of the Complete Edition.
What do the expansion and modes add?
Echoes of Sekigahara
PlayStation describes Echoes of Sekigahara as a new story expansion set in a new area of Ezo. It adds enemies and a new weapon type, and explores more of Atsu’s past during the Battle of Sekigahara. For someone who wants more narrative and combat within Yōtei’s setting, this is the most direct reason to return.

Sucker Punch says a PlayStation internet connection and account are required to download it, and the store says PlayStation Plus is required for online play or multiplayer. Check the wording on your regional store page before purchasing.

What is paid, and what arrives in the free October update?
The Complete Edition and its upgrade bundle paid content, but not every addition announced for October 2026 is exclusive to buyers. Sucker Punch says the October 1 patch makes Watanabe Mode’s new tracks available for free, and adds Beauty of Yōtei, an environmental, screensaver-like mode. Those are free patch additions, not reasons to pay for the Complete Edition.
The original announcement also offered a Sakai Armor early unlock to digital purchasers by September 30, 2026. That deadline has passed, so it should not be treated as an active offer. The UK store lists Traveller’s Maps as an early unlock within the Complete Edition package; consult your local listing for the terms attached to its items.

Should a new player buy the full edition or should an owner upgrade?

These are regional prices reported in the announcement and UK store listing, not a worldwide price guarantee. Check the current local listing, and make sure you are comparing the upgrade with the full edition rather than mistaking one for the other. The announcement says the physical Complete Edition launches October 1, 2026; its trailer description says the digital edition is available to purchase. Local availability and stock can differ.

The original game is a standalone PS5 adventure set in 1600s rural Japan, in the northern region of Ezo, roughly 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. It follows Atsu, a mercenary on a path of vengeance and redemption. Previous experience with Ghost of Tsushima is not presented as a prerequisite. In Sony Interactive Entertainment’s October 2, 2025 launch announcement, Sucker Punch co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming described Yōtei as “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance, told through the eyes of a new hero set in the breathtaking edge of Japan.”

In its October 2, 2026 Complete Edition review, MeriStation rated the package 9 and described it as particularly suited to people who had not yet bought the game. The outlet also judged that the additions do not radically transform the experience. That distinction matters: the expansion and survival mode add new reasons to play, but they do not make the Complete Edition a new kind of game.

Reviews of the base game offer useful context, but are not tests of the Complete Edition. TechRadar praised its world, combat, cinematic presentation and exploration, while warning that familiar open-world activities can become repetitive and noting accessibility gaps, including no colorblind options. Its reviewer reported more than 55 hours testing the original game on PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim; that is testing time, not a completion-time estimate. Tom’s Guide similarly characterized the base game as polished and cinematic while noting its familiar open-world design.

Who is the Complete Edition for?
- Choose the Complete Edition if you are new to Yōtei and want the base adventure plus the expansion, modes and listed extras in one purchase.
- Consider the upgrade if you own the original and the new story or wave-based combat is worth the local upgrade price to you. The Complete Edition review’s main caution for returning players is that these additions expand rather than remake the experience.
- Skip the paid content for now if the original campaign was enough or if the free October patch additions are all you wanted. Beauty of Yōtei and the new Watanabe Mode tracks do not require the Complete Edition.
- Look elsewhere if repetitive open-world activities or limited accessibility options are deal-breakers. Those concerns were raised in reviews of the base game, not established as Complete Edition-specific changes.
