Ghost of Tsushima vs. Guns of Eschaton: Which PS5 Action Game Should You Play?

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut if you want a complete PS5 game you can play now: a third-person samurai adventure with an open world, a cinematic revenge story, the Iki Island expansion and the separate Legends online co-op mode. Choose Guns of Eschaton if its specific formula is what you want—a first-person occult western, ammunition-conscious gunfights, soulslike timing and parries, enemy analysis, flexible builds and optional co-op—and you are willing to wait for its reported December 8, 2026 launch.

Neither is objectively “better” from the available information. They target different fantasies, viewpoints and combat rhythms. Ghost of Tsushima is the safer recommendation for someone deciding what to play today; Guns of Eschaton is the more unusual choice for a player who has been waiting for a supernatural frontier shooter.

At a glance: which game fits you?

Question Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut Guns of Eschaton
Can you play it now? Yes. The Director’s Cut is listed for PS5 (and PS4) on the official PlayStation Store. Not yet. A report dated October 16, 2026 gives a December 8, 2026 release date.
Camera and core action Third-person samurai melee with stealth-oriented action. First-person shooting combined with soulslike timing, parries and limited-resource gunplay.
Setting A 17th-century Japanese island, presented as a scenic open-world adventure. An occult, apocalyptic version of the 19th-century American frontier.
Structure Open-world campaign, Iki Island expansion and the separate Legends online co-op mode. A reported solo journey or two-player co-op; the exact world structure and campaign length are not verified.
Best match Players who want a finished, cinematic samurai story and exploration immediately. Players who want an unconventional western shooter with investigation, buildcrafting and deliberate timing.
Buying certainty The official store lists the PS5 Director’s Cut at $69.99, including its major bundled content. Final pricing, physical-edition details and retail availability remain unresolved before launch.

Use the table as a filter rather than a scorecard. The games do not occupy the same subgenre: one is an established third-person open-world sword adventure, while the other is an upcoming first-person soulslike shooter. The most important decision is whether you want a known experience now or a distinctive premise later.

What you get with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

A finished samurai adventure

The Director’s Cut is the relevant purchasable edition for this comparison. The official PlayStation Store lists it for PS4 and PS5 at $69.99. That listing includes the base game, the Iki Island expansion, Legends online co-op, a digital mini art book, director’s commentary and bonus in-game items. The price and package are the store’s listed terms accessed in 2026; regional storefronts, taxes and later promotions can differ.

Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut
  • Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Roam vast countryside and expansive terrain to encounter rich characters, discover ancient landmarks and uncover the hidden beauty of Tsushima.
  • The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
  • Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
  • Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
  • A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.

The game puts you in a third-person 17th-century Japanese island setting. Its action combines sword fighting with stealth-oriented approaches, so the appeal is not only the timing of individual strikes. You can read encounters from an over-the-shoulder view, move through a broad landscape and decide whether a situation should be confronted openly or approached more quietly. This combination makes it a natural fit for someone who wants combat and sightseeing to be part of the same continuous journey.

Open-world exploration with an additional island

The main campaign is structured as an open-world adventure, and the Director’s Cut adds Iki Island as expansion content rather than treating the base game as the whole package. That matters if exploration is your deciding factor: the edition is not simply a graphics or platform upgrade, but a version that bundles a separate area and its associated story content.

The open-world label also explains why Ghost of Tsushima is the stronger recommendation for a player asking specifically for scenic travel, optional discoveries and a campaign that lets them choose their route. The available information does not establish a completion-time statistic or a performance benchmark, so this recommendation is about structure and content, not a promise of a particular number of hours or frame rate.

A separate online mode

Legends is an online co-op mode included with the Director’s Cut. Treat it as an additional multiplayer experience alongside the campaign, not as evidence that the entire single-player story is a drop-in co-op adventure. If your priority is to play the main narrative alone and then try a dedicated online mode, this package supports that pattern.

What is known about Guns of Eschaton

An occult western rather than another samurai game

An October 16, 2026 report from PlayStation LifeStyle/Evolve Media describes Guns of Eschaton as a mystical western soulslike first-person shooter. Its frontier draws on 19th-century American imagery, but the world is transformed by occult horror, mythology, religion, history and supernatural forces. This is not the unnamed next chapter of the Ghost series and it is not Ghost of Yōtei; it is a separate game with a different setting and perspective.

The reported PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam) release date is December 8, 2026. Because that date is still in the future relative to this comparison, treat launch timing and retail status as changeable. A release report is not the same as a hands-on review, and no independent quality score, performance test or completion-time figure has been established here.

Systems built around scarce ammunition and study

The game’s reported marketing language uses the line Every Bullet Counts. That phrase signals a resource-conscious approach: shots are intended to be considered rather than fired without consequence. The same report describes enemy study through a Codex, precise timing and parries, character progression, flexible buildcrafting, multiple firearms and ammunition types, occult powers, talismans, armor and consumables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those systems suggest a loop in which observation and preparation matter as much as aim. A Codex can make learning an enemy part of progression; parries give close encounters a timing test; and equipment, powers and ammunition choices let you tune a build. These are reported features, not a guarantee that every build will be equally effective or that the final balance will match the early description.

Solo play and an ally

The reported structure supports a solo journey or co-op with an ally. The comparison material describes that co-op as two-player, but it does not establish whether every mission, progression system or story beat works identically with a partner. If co-op is your deciding factor, wait for final mode details before assuming that the campaign has the same multiplayer behavior as an online service game.

Combat: sword discipline versus firearm resource management

Why Ghost suits a melee-first player

Ghost of Tsushima presents combat from a third-person viewpoint, which keeps your character, nearby threats and the surrounding terrain visible at once. Its identity is samurai swordplay with stealth-oriented alternatives. That perspective supports a cinematic feel: you see the fighter’s movement and the space around an encounter while deciding whether to enter a duel, reposition or avoid direct confrontation.

Pick this combat model if you want the weapon itself to be the center of the fantasy. The appeal is a readable melee encounter and the ability to move between direct fighting and quieter approaches. Nothing in the available evidence supports a claim about exact difficulty settings, frame-rate modes or review consensus, so choose it for the combat concept rather than an unverified technical promise.

Why Guns of Eschaton suits a deliberate shooter

Guns of Eschaton changes the physical relationship with danger. You see through a first-person view, manage firearms and ammunition types, and are expected to use soulslike timing and parries. The combination is aimed at a player who enjoys a shooter where every encounter can ask for restraint, pattern recognition and a well-timed defensive action.

Its Codex and build systems add decisions that are unusual in a conventional western shooter. Studying an enemy can inform how you approach it; ammunition selection can alter your resource planning; and talismans, armor, consumables and occult powers can support different character setups. Since the game has not launched, these features establish the intended design, not proven feel, balance or responsiveness.

Choosing by rhythm

Ask yourself what you want to do repeatedly. If the satisfying unit of play is a sword engagement viewed from outside your character, Ghost of Tsushima is the clearer match. If it is entering a dangerous room, deciding which ammunition to spend, reading an enemy and risking a parry in first person, Guns of Eschaton is the more targeted choice. This is a fit judgment from the announced feature sets, not a claim that one game has superior execution.

World design and exploration

Ghost offers the established open-world option

The Director’s Cut gives you a known open-world campaign in a 17th-century Japanese island setting, plus Iki Island expansion content. That structure is important for players who use “open world” to mean a large scenic space with a story route and optional travel. You can buy the game and begin exploring immediately, without waiting for a release window or for the developer to clarify the basic campaign format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The scenery is part of the product’s identity, but the evidence does not provide a technical comparison of resolution, loading times or frame rates between PS4 and PS5. Avoid choosing it on an assumed performance number. Choose it because its world structure and setting match the kind of exploration you want.

Guns offers a strong premise, not a verified map size

The frontier setting is described as occult and apocalyptic, with historical and religious imagery reshaped by supernatural horror. That gives it a distinctive atmosphere for players who want a western that is stranger than a conventional gunfighter story.

However, the available information does not verify whether the world is open, hub-based, mission-based or divided into another structure. It also does not establish campaign length. If your top requirement is a large explorable map, the evidence supports Ghost of Tsushima as the safer choice; the western’s atmosphere alone cannot prove that it offers the same type of roaming.

Story, tone and point of view

Ghost’s cinematic revenge framework

The Director’s Cut is aimed at players who want a cinematic revenge story in a samurai setting. Its third-person presentation keeps the protagonist visible as the story moves through the island, while the open-world format lets narrative progression coexist with travel and optional activities. Iki Island extends that package with another story area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That combination makes it easier to recommend when you want a complete narrative arc rather than an experiment whose final shape is still pending. The recommendation is about availability and stated structure; no review-based judgment about writing, acting or emotional impact is established in the supplied evidence.

Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

Guns’ occult-apocalyptic western tone

Guns of Eschaton is for a different mood: frontier imagery filtered through occult horror, mythology, religion, history and supernatural forces. The first-person viewpoint puts the player inside that world rather than presenting a visible samurai hero, and the Codex reinforces the idea that understanding what you face is part of the journey.

Choose this tone if the setting itself is the hook. A player who wants a familiar historical adventure may find the supernatural western premise more compelling than another realistic period drama; a player seeking a straightforward open-world travel story may prefer the established structure of Ghost of Tsushima.

Progression and build decisions

What the Ghost package confirms

The store listing confirms the Director’s Cut contents, including the expansion, Legends mode, digital art book, director’s commentary and bonus in-game items. The available material does not provide a complete inventory of the campaign’s skill trees, equipment categories or upgrade costs, so this comparison should not invent a build guide for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That absence does not make the game unsuitable for progression-focused players; it simply means the reliable recommendation is based on its campaign, setting and included modes rather than on undocumented numerical systems.

What Guns explicitly foregrounds

The western’s reported progression is more visibly system-driven. Character progression is paired with flexible buildcrafting, firearms, ammunition types, occult powers, talismans, armor and consumables. Those categories imply several ways to prepare for encounters, but the final number of weapons, the respec rules, the economy and the balance between builds have not been established.

This makes Guns of Eschaton the better fit for a player who enjoys assembling a loadout and adapting it to enemy knowledge. It is not yet the better choice for someone who needs guaranteed details about progression depth, because those details can only be judged after the game’s systems are documented and playable.

Co-op: what “multiplayer” means in each game

Ghost’s Legends mode

The Director’s Cut includes Legends online co-op. Its placement in the package means you receive a dedicated multiplayer component alongside the open-world campaign. If your plan is “play a solo samurai story, then join friends online,” this is the confirmed option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer from the word “co-op” that the single-player campaign becomes a fully cooperative story. The supplied product description confirms Legends as an online mode, not campaign-wide co-op.

Guns’ reported ally-based co-op

The western is described as supporting a solo journey or co-op with an ally, with the comparison material characterizing that as two-player co-op. This directly targets players who want to bring another person into the supernatural frontier. The exact mission rules, progression synchronization and whether every activity supports two players remain unverified.

If you need a multiplayer game immediately, neither the announced feature nor a future date changes the practical answer: Ghost of Tsushima is available now, while Guns of Eschaton requires waiting until its reported launch and confirmation of final co-op details.

Price, platform and release certainty

Ghost has a concrete PS5 purchase

The official PlayStation Store lists Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for PS5 at $69.99 and also lists a PS4 version. The package contents are specified, so you can make a buying decision around a known product rather than an announced feature set. The figure is the store listing accessed in 2026, not a guarantee of every region’s tax-inclusive checkout total or future sale price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Guns remains a future purchase

The October 16, 2026 report gives Guns of Eschaton a December 8, 2026 release date on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Final retail pricing, a physical edition and verified retailer stock are not established. The responsible action before launch is to wishlist or monitor official listings rather than assume a price or edition that has not been announced.

This difference is decisive for an immediate purchase. You can start Ghost of Tsushima now; you can only plan for Guns of Eschaton until its release and final product details arrive.

Decision paths for common players

Choose Ghost of Tsushima when:

  • You want a finished PS5 game today instead of waiting for a future release.
  • Your ideal combat is third-person samurai swordplay with stealth-oriented options.
  • You care most about a scenic open-world campaign and an additional island expansion.
  • You want a cinematic revenge story in a historical Japanese setting.
  • You want confirmed online co-op content through Legends.
  • You prefer a listed price and a clearly defined edition before buying.

Wait for Guns of Eschaton when:

  • The phrase “occult western first-person shooter” is more exciting to you than a samurai adventure.
  • You enjoy ammunition management and the reported philosophy that Every Bullet Counts.
  • You want soulslike timing, parries and enemy study through a Codex.
  • You like experimenting with firearms, ammunition types, occult powers, talismans, armor and consumables.
  • You specifically want a solo journey that can be played with an ally.
  • You accept that launch timing, pricing, world structure, campaign length and final quality still require confirmation.

If you are deciding only by “which is better?”

There is no evidence-based reason to declare one universally superior. Ghost of Tsushima wins on present availability, known package contents and verified open-world structure. Guns of Eschaton wins on premise specificity for players seeking a supernatural frontier, first-person shooting and build-heavy soulslike systems. Those are different kinds of advantage, so a universal ranking would mislead you.

Where Ghost of Yōtei fits—and where it does not

Some readers asking about a “new” Ghost game may also have heard of Ghost of Yōtei. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s October 2, 2025 launch announcement describes it as a standalone PS5 experience set 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima in 1600s rural Japan, starring a wandering mercenary named Atsu. It is another samurai title, not the western game discussed here.

Sony listed launch editions at $69.99 MSRP for standard, $79.99 for digital deluxe and $249.99 for collector’s. The announcement also says a free Ghost of Yōtei Legends co-op mode is planned for 2026. Those figures and the planned mode belong to Yōtei, not to Guns of Eschaton, and should not be used to estimate the western’s price.

Starting with Ghost of Tsushima can make sense if you want the earlier samurai setting before moving to another story in the broader Ghost line. Hermen Hulst, CEO of Studio Business at Sony Interactive Entertainment, called Yōtei “a remarkable experience” and praised the care taken to bring “the landscapes, legends, and soul of Ezo to life.” Sucker Punch co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming described it as “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance.” Those statements explain the appeal of the follow-up, but they do not turn it into the unnamed western shooter or establish that it should replace Tsushima for a new player.

What is still unknown about Guns before launch

A careful comparison should separate announced concepts from demonstrated results. Before December 8, 2026, the following points are not established by the available information:

  • Independent review scores or hands-on assessments of shooting feel, parry timing and enemy behavior.
  • Campaign length, replay value and the precise shape of the world.
  • PS5 performance characteristics, graphics modes and technical benchmarks.
  • Final retail pricing, physical-edition availability and regional store listings.
  • Whether every mission and progression element supports two-player co-op.
  • How many weapons, ammunition types, occult powers, talismans, armor pieces and consumables will ship, and how they will be balanced.

These are not minor omissions if you are pre-ordering or buying solely for multiplayer. They are reasons to treat the western as a promising, clearly differentiated upcoming game rather than as a proven alternative to a finished release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation

Play Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut if you want the dependable answer today: third-person samurai combat, stealth-oriented action, a scenic open world, a cinematic revenge story, Iki Island and Legends online co-op in a listed PS5 package. Hold out for Guns of Eschaton if the occult-apocalyptic western setting, first-person gunplay, ammunition discipline, parries, Codex study and buildcrafting are the features you would choose even without a review score. The first is the complete present-tense recommendation; the second is the focused future option for a player willing to wait and reassess at launch.
