Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is the cooperative online mode for Ghost of Tsushima. It is available on PS4 and PS5, and in the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. PS4 and PS5 players can play together and carry Legends progression between those consoles. PC players can join PlayStation friends through invitation-based cross-play, which PlayStation currently labels Beta.

The practical requirements depend on where you play: PlayStation consoles need an internet connection and PlayStation Plus, while PC online play requires a PlayStation sign-in. The mode has two-player Story missions, four-player Survival and Raid activities, and two-team Rivals matches. This guide explains access, ownership, cross-play, group sizes, classes, progression, and a sensible first session.

What is Ghost of Tsushima: Legends?

Legends is a separate cooperative multiplayer mode built around supernatural tales narrated by Gyozen. Rather than continuing the single-player campaign as Jin Sakai, you and other players choose specialized classes, complete missions, defeat enemy waves, earn equipment, and unlock class abilities.

You can play through online matchmaking or invite people from your friends list. The mode is organized around four different activities, each with its own group size and objective:

Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut
  • Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Roam vast countryside and expansive terrain to encounter rich characters, discover ancient landmarks and uncover the hidden beauty of Tsushima.
  • The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
  • Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
  • Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
  • A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.
Activity Players What you do
Story Two players Complete cooperative missions based on Gyozen’s stories. Higher difficulties add tougher encounters and bonus objectives.
Survival Four players Defend locations against successive waves of enemies.
Raid Four players Take on a three-part adventure that depends on teamwork and communication.
Rivals Two teams of two Defeat enemy waves, collect Magatama, and race through Final Stand waves against the other team.

There is no official player-population figure, guaranteed queue time, or promise that every activity will always have a full matchmaking group. Those factors can vary by platform, region, time, and activity.

Can I play Ghost of Tsushima: Legends on PC?

Yes. Legends is included with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for PC. PlayStation lists May 16, 2024 as the PC release date. PC online multiplayer requires you to sign in with a PlayStation account; PlayStation describes that sign-in as necessary for online multiplayer and use of the PlayStation overlay.

PC cross-play with PS4 and PS5 is supported when a session is started by inviting PlayStation friends. PlayStation currently identifies this cross-play feature as Beta, so treat the invitation requirement and Beta status as part of the current support conditions rather than assuming unrestricted platform matchmaking.

PC requirements that are easy to miss

  • A PlayStation sign-in is required for online multiplayer, even though the game runs on PC.
  • Steam Deck does not support Legends online multiplayer according to PlayStation’s PC support information.
  • The cited PC support information does not state that PC players need PlayStation Plus. Do not transfer the console subscription requirement to PC without checking the current PC support wording.

Can PS4 and PS5 play Legends together?

Yes. PS4 and PS5 players can join the same Legends sessions. Legends progression carries between those two console generations, so moving from a PS4 to a PS5 does not require starting your Legends progress over, provided you use the relevant PlayStation account.

This is cross-generation console play, not a statement that every feature is identical across every platform. PC cross-play follows a separate, invitation-based process and is currently marked Beta.

Can PC players play with PlayStation friends?

Yes. PC players can play with PS4 and PS5 friends by inviting those friends through PlayStation Network when starting a game session. The official PlayStation Blog described cross-play as supported when a session is started by inviting friends on PlayStation Network, and PlayStation support currently labels the feature Beta.

How to start a PC-to-console session

  1. Launch Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on PC and complete the required PlayStation sign-in.
  2. Open the Legends multiplayer area and choose the activity you want to host.
  3. Use the in-game or PlayStation overlay invitation flow to invite your PlayStation friends.
  4. Wait for invited players to join, then start the Story, Survival, Raid, or Rivals session that matches your group size.

Because this cross-play is invitation-based, do not assume a PC player will automatically be matched into a console-only public lobby. If an invitation fails, verify that everyone is signed in, using the intended PlayStation account, and running a supported version.

Do I need PlayStation Plus for Legends?

On PS4 and PS5, yes. PlayStation’s official Legends overview states: “Internet connection and PlayStation®Plus required to download and play Legends Mode.” Both requirements apply to console access.

On PC, PlayStation support requires a PlayStation sign-in for online multiplayer. The cited PC support page does not say that PC players need PlayStation Plus, so the console rule should not be presented as a PC requirement.

Console checklist

  • PS4 or PS5 with Legends access through an eligible Ghost of Tsushima version or the standalone Legends product.
  • An internet connection.
  • An active PlayStation Plus subscription.
  • A PlayStation account able to use online services.

PC checklist

  • Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for PC.
  • A PlayStation account sign-in for online multiplayer and the PlayStation overlay.
  • An internet connection and a supported PC setup.
  • Not Steam Deck for online Legends play; PlayStation states that online multiplayer is unavailable there.

Is Legends included with Ghost of Tsushima?

It depends on the version you own. The Director’s Cut includes the Legends online co-op mode. PlayStation also says owners of other Ghost of Tsushima versions already have Legends content and its updates without an additional Legends purchase.

There is also a standalone Legends product for PS4 and PS5. That standalone version contains the online multiplayer mode, not the single-player campaign. It is a different purchase route from buying an edition that includes the full Ghost of Tsushima experience.

Store prices, regional listings, stock, and promotional terms change. Check the current PlayStation or PC storefront entry for your region before buying. The available information does not establish a physical standalone Legends disc, so do not assume one exists.

How many players can play Legends co-op?

The answer depends on the activity. Story missions are designed for two players. Survival supports four players defending locations against enemy waves. The Raid is a three-part, four-player challenge. Rivals uses two teams of two, for four players total.

One other player Story

You can invite friends or use online matchmaking. The official descriptions do not require a particular class composition, and they do not guarantee a specific matchmaking experience.

  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

Which class should I pick first?

Samurai: frontline fighting

Samurai is the straightforward choice if you want to fight enemies at close range and stay in the middle of an encounter. Pick it when direct combat is more appealing than ranged attacks, stealth, or team support.

Hunter: ranged combat

Hunter focuses on attacking from a distance. It suits players who prefer positioning, ranged pressure, and picking targets before they reach the group.

Ronin: support and revival

Ronin is the support-oriented class. Its description emphasizes helping the team and reviving allies, making it a natural fit if you pay attention to team survival more than personal damage.

Assassin: stealth and burst damage

Assassin emphasizes stealth and high burst damage. Choose it if you prefer approaching carefully, selecting a target, and removing that target quickly rather than holding the frontline.

These roles are starting points, not a prescribed party formula. The official class information does not require one of each class, so choose based on your preferred role and adjust as you learn how your group plays.

How to get started: a practical first session

The following route is an editorially useful starting plan based on the documented activities and progression systems. It is not presented as an officially mandated optimal build or order.

  1. Confirm your access. On PS4 or PS5, verify that your edition includes Legends or that you own the standalone multiplayer product. On PC, confirm that you are using Director’s Cut and can complete PlayStation sign-in.
  2. Check online requirements. Console players need internet access and PlayStation Plus. PC players need PlayStation sign-in; Steam Deck does not support online Legends multiplayer.
  3. Choose a class. Select Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin according to the role you want to practice.
  4. Pick an activity that fits your group. Start Story with one other player, Survival or Raid with three other players, or Rivals with four players divided into two teams.
  5. Invite friends or use matchmaking. For PC-to-PlayStation play, send invitations to PlayStation friends; cross-play is currently identified as Beta.
  6. Complete missions and collect rewards. Missions award gear and cosmetics, while play experience unlocks techniques, perks, and class abilities.
  7. Increase difficulty when your gear is ready. Higher difficulties offer gear with greater power and rarity, but they also introduce tougher encounters and, in Story, bonus objectives.
  8. Experiment with your class setup. Use the experience and equipment you earn to refine how you handle damage, support, ranged attacks, or stealth.

How does Legends progression work?

Progression comes from playing missions and activities. Rewards include gear and cosmetics. Experience unlocks techniques, perks, and class abilities, so your character develops through both equipment and class progression.

Difficulty affects the quality of gear available: higher difficulties offer equipment with more power and rarity. That creates a practical progression loop—complete activities at a comfortable level, improve your equipment, then attempt harder content when your group is ready.

Gear power and Gear Mastery

The official store description identifies Gear Mastery as a system that can upgrade gear to level 120. Treat that figure as a gameplay-system detail, not as a player-count or performance statistic. The description does not establish that every item begins at, or automatically reaches, that level.

What progression carries between consoles?

Legends progression carries between PS4 and PS5. This is specifically documented for those two console generations. PC cross-play support describes how players can join one another, but it should not be treated as a blanket statement that all progression transfers between PC and PlayStation.

Choosing between the purchase and platform routes

Your best route depends on what you already own and where your friends play.

Your situation Most relevant route Important consideration
You only want multiplayer on PS4 or PS5 Standalone Legends It includes the online mode, not the single-player campaign.
You want the campaign and multiplayer on PlayStation An eligible Ghost of Tsushima edition, including Director’s Cut Legends is included with the edition; verify the exact regional listing.
You want campaign and multiplayer on PC Director’s Cut for PC PlayStation sign-in is required for online multiplayer.
Your friends are split between PC and PlayStation Supported PC and console versions Start the session by inviting PlayStation friends; PC cross-play is marked Beta.
You are moving from PS4 to PS5 Use the same PlayStation account Legends progression carries between those consoles.

Do not choose solely from a headline price: storefront prices and availability change by region and date. Compare whether you need only multiplayer, the single-player campaign as well, and the platform where your group already plays.

Troubleshooting common access problems

Legends is unavailable on a PlayStation console

  • Confirm that your installed edition includes Legends or that the standalone multiplayer product is associated with your account.
  • Check the internet connection.
  • On PS4 or PS5, verify that PlayStation Plus is active.
  • Make sure the game and its updates are installed.

A PC friend cannot join

  • Confirm the PC player has Director’s Cut, not an edition without Legends.
  • Complete PlayStation sign-in on PC.
  • Start the session by inviting the person through PlayStation Network, as required for PC-to-console cross-play.
  • Remember that PlayStation currently labels PC cross-play Beta; support behavior can change.

Steam Deck online play does not work

PlayStation’s PC support information states that online multiplayer is not available on Steam Deck. This is a platform limitation, not a missing subscription setting.

The group cannot agree on an activity

Count the players first. Two players can choose Story. Four players can choose Survival or Raid. If all four want opposing objectives, choose Rivals, which divides the group into two teams of two.

What Legends does not promise

Official documentation establishes supported platforms, account requirements, mode sizes, and progression systems, but it does not provide a current player-population number, matchmaking wait-time guarantee, or claim that a particular class or build is mandatory for beginners. Those details can vary and should not be inferred from the mode’s advertised team sizes.
