Fox likened Iki Island’s scale to the main game’s first act, described new content and a more demanding combat challenge, and explained how the team intended PS5 features to affect the experience. Those are the developers’ descriptions of their goals—not independent measurements of performance, playtime, or historical accuracy.
Which interview is this?
The title “Interview: Ghost of Tsushima” could refer to more than one conversation about the game. This article focuses on Robert Ramsey’s July 29, 2021 Push Square interview with Fox and Wang, which covers the Director’s Cut, Iki Island, PS5 features, and the game’s visual and cultural influences. It was published before the Director’s Cut launched.

The interview is useful as a record of what two Sucker Punch developers said they were trying to achieve. It is not a technical test or a neutral assessment of how successfully each feature works.
How big is the Iki Island expansion?
Fox compared Iki Island to Izuhara, the first act’s region in the main game: “If you’re familiar with Ghost of Tsushima, Iki Island is the size of, really, the first act of the main game, Izuhara.” He characterized it as a dense story with landscape and secrets.

That comparison gives returning players a familiar reference point, but it is not a measured area comparison or a completion-time estimate. The interview does not establish how many hours the expansion takes to finish.
What does Iki Island add?
Fox said the expansion adds player skills, armor, stories, and new enemy types. Players can begin it in Act 2 of the main story. He also said its combat becomes more demanding for players who have progressed further, describing a challenge that takes the player’s development into account.

What did the developers say the PS5 version adds?
Fox described the PS5’s haptics and adaptive triggers as a way to make combat impacts more tactile. He gave the example of a sword deflecting off a shield: “This is a game where we can suddenly let you feel what it’s like to hold a katana in your hands when it gets deflected by a shield.” This is a description of intended feedback, not a measurement of controller performance.

How did the team describe the game’s look and influences?
Color and landscape
Wang described the main game’s visual direction through its bold colors and landscapes, including golden temples and red flower fields. Her comments emphasize the deliberate visual appeal of the setting rather than offering a claim about how closely any particular scene reproduces a historical location.

Samurai cinema and historical research
Fox said the team was inspired by Japanese samurai cinema, including the films of Akira Kurosawa: “We made this game because we’re massive, massive fans of Japanese samurai cinema, Akira Kurosawa.” He also said the team worked with colleagues and experts in Japan on the period. That describes the developers’ influences and research process; it does not establish that the game is historically exact.

A separate BagoGames interview with composer Ilan Eshkeri offers a different perspective on the story’s moral conflict. Eshkeri said Jin’s struggle drew him in because, beneath the killing and violence, it concerns a young man going against what he was taught morally and traditionally. That is the composer’s perspective from a separate conversation, not part of the Push Square interview.
