Developed with Qualcomm Technologies and Gemtek Technology, the gateway combines quad-band wireless networking with on-device AI processing. Existing GFiber 20 Gig customers are due to receive it first, after certification; the announcement does not describe a standalone retail launch.
What GFiber announced
Qualcomm unveiled the gateway in Vienna on October 12, 2026, during Network X 2026. GFiber describes it as the flagship router for its 20 Gig residential service, while Qualcomm supplies the Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform and Gemtek is the manufacturing collaborator.

The product is a service gateway rather than a consumer router advertised for independent purchase. It is designed around a symmetrical 20 Gig fiber connection, meaning the access service is intended to provide equivalent upstream and downstream capacity. Actual household performance will still depend on the fiber termination, wired equipment, client devices, cabling, wireless conditions and the service configuration.
Hardware and networking architecture
Qualcomm’s platform combines concurrent quad-band Wi‑Fi 8 (802.11bn), a penta-core CPU and a dedicated Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. The NPU is the component intended to run machine-learning and agentic-AI workloads locally, alongside the CPU’s general networking and service functions.

| Attribute | What has been announced | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless generation | Wi‑Fi 8, also identified as 802.11bn | An emerging standard; the platform brief describes planned compliance based on draft IEEE specifications. |
| Radio configuration | Concurrent quad-band operation | More bands can help distribute clients and traffic, but do not guarantee a particular speed in every room. |
| AI hardware | Qualcomm Hexagon NPU | Supports local inference and intelligent network functions without sending every decision to a cloud service. |
| CPU | Penta-core design | Provides processing headroom for routing, security, diagnostics and AI-enabled services. |
| Platform peak PHY capacity | Up to 33 Gbps | A Qualcomm Technologies platform maximum, not a measured end-user throughput figure for this GFiber gateway. |
| Simultaneous clients | Up to 1,500 | A platform-level maximum; real capacity varies with traffic patterns, radio conditions and device types. |
What the local AI can do
Intent-based parental controls
In a demonstration, a user could issue a natural-language request to pause social-media access on children’s devices until a specified time. The key change is that the request describes an outcome rather than requiring the user to find individual devices, applications and schedules manually.
Voice-controlled guest access
The gateway can respond to a voice request for guest access and generate a QR code on its front-facing touch screen. A visitor can then use the code to join the guest network, reducing the need to read or type a long password.

Keeping these workloads on the gateway can reduce dependence on cloud processing and help keep sensitive home-network information local. The announcement does not specify which models run entirely on-device, what telemetry leaves the home, or how long voice and diagnostic data are retained. Those details will matter when GFiber publishes the production software and privacy controls.

When 20 Gig customers get it
Existing GFiber 20 Gig customers are the first planned users. GFiber says it will upgrade all 20 Gig customers once the hardware is fully certified. No delivery date, customer-installation process or regional schedule is stated in the announcement, so customers should treat certification as the gating event rather than assume an immediate shipment.
The materials also do not state a gateway rental charge, a separate purchase price, a retail model number or an independent store listing. Availability is therefore tied to GFiber’s 20 Gig service flow, not to buying a generic Wi‑Fi 8 router for use with another internet provider.

Does Wi‑Fi 8 make the connection faster or more reliable?
The announcement emphasizes reliability, responsiveness, spectrum efficiency and advanced mesh networking—not just peak throughput. A newer wireless generation can improve how a network schedules traffic, handles interference and maintains links as devices move or conditions change. Those benefits are most noticeable when many devices share the network, when latency-sensitive applications compete with large transfers, or when coverage depends on coordinated mesh nodes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Wi‑Fi 8 cannot turn a device with a slower radio into a 20 Gig client, and a wireless link will not normally deliver the full capacity of a 20 Gig fiber plan to one phone or laptop. Wired multi-gigabit equipment, compatible client radios and suitable cabling remain necessary to use the service’s capacity. Because 802.11bn is still described here through draft-specification compliance, final certification and real-world interoperability may change as the standard matures.

What the 50 Gig roadmap means
The architecture is intended to support future services including 50 Gig. GFiber reports that it completed a live-network 50G PON trial in Kansas City and plans a residential 50G trial using the new gateway in spring 2027.
Those statements describe testing and a planned trial, not general availability of 50 Gig residential service. A trial also does not establish nationwide coverage, consumer pricing or a final launch date. Customers should wait for a formal service announcement before treating 50 Gig as an orderable plan.
