Getting Your First App Built Without a Tech Team: Costs, Questions, and Mistakes to Avoid

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You do not need a technical team to get an app built, but you do need a defined first release before you can get a useful quote. Set out who the app is for, the task it must help them complete, the platform it needs to run on, and what can wait. Then ask every developer or agency to price that same scope—including design, testing, launch, and post-launch work.

How much does it cost to build an app?

There is no single reliable price for “an app.” Clutch’s mobile app pricing guide, updated September 21, 2026, says projects reviewed on its platform typically cost $10,000–$49,999. Clutch separately reports an average project cost of $90,780.11, average monthly cost of $8,188.44, agency rates of $25–$49 per hour, and a usual project timeline of about 11 months. These are different platform-reported measures—not a quote for a small first release or a prediction of what your project will cost. Clutch’s mobile app pricing guide describes the projects and provider listings represented in its data.

Scope and timeline shape the estimate. Clutch identifies features, user-experience complexity, backend work, development approach, number of platforms, provider location, design, APIs, and third-party integrations as cost factors. A simple app with a small number of straightforward screens is a different project from one needing real-time updates, geolocation, or complex algorithms. Clutch’s app budgeting guide also treats coding, design, testing, and deployment as budget components, rather than reducing the cost to coding alone.

Use public benchmarks to understand the broad market, not to decide whether a particular proposal is fair. Your estimate becomes useful when providers price the same defined work and explain their assumptions.

Define a first release before asking for bids

Start with the user’s problem, not a list of features you might eventually want. Describe the person who will use the app, the task they need to complete, and what a successful first version must let them do. Clutch advises preparing goals, platform, features, and timing before requesting an estimate; its guide recommends a detailed scope of work or request for proposal (RFP) to help clarify total price. Clutch’s guide to hiring someone to build an app covers that preparation.

A concise first-release brief can include:

  • Users and purpose: who the app serves and the main problem it addresses.
  • Core tasks: the actions a user must be able to complete in the first release, in sequence where useful.
  • Platform: iOS, Android, web, or a considered cross-platform approach; identify any required devices or browser support.
  • Features and data: the screens and user flows, accounts or permissions, information the app handles, and any backend functions it needs.
  • Connections: external services, APIs, payment systems, or other integrations the app depends on.
  • Boundaries: features, platforms, or operational work explicitly deferred until later.
  • Timing: any genuine deadline and what needs to happen by it.

This brief is not a substitute for technical discovery. It gives each provider the same starting point and makes omissions easier to spot.

Choose a platform based on users and lifecycle cost

Do not choose iOS first, Android first, or cross-platform by default. Identify where intended users are and which platform they actually need, then weigh the first build against the cost of changes and maintenance later.

Clutch says hourly rates can be similar across iOS, Android, and cross-platform categories in its data, while noting that two separate native apps can double overall project cost because they need separate code and often different designs. Maintaining both can add cost later. This is a general observation in Clutch’s guide, not a guarantee that every native or cross-platform proposal will have that price relationship. Clutch’s pricing guide discusses platform and maintenance considerations.

Ask whether the first release can validate the core task on one platform before expanding. If you are considering cross-platform development, ask the provider to explain whether it supports the required user experience, integrations, and device capabilities. Compare the initial build and likely update work across the platforms you are actually considering; the right trade-off depends on your users, requirements, and budget.

What should you ask an app developer before hiring?

Clutch lists discovery, planning, UX/UI design, development, quality assurance (QA), launch, and maintenance among services app developers may provide. That does not mean every bid includes them. Ask the provider to identify exactly what is included and what is not. Clutch’s app budgeting guide describes these service areas.

  • Changes: How are requested changes handled, and how do they affect price and timing?
  • Launch and support: Does the bid include store-submission assistance and post-launch support? For how long, and what work is billed separately?
  • Dependencies: Which third-party services or APIs are required? Ask whether they have recurring charges and who will verify the applicable prices; there is no universal integration price.

For a meaningful comparison, have providers estimate the same scope and state their deliverables, timeline, acceptance conditions, assumptions, exclusions, dependencies, and support period. A fixed total does not make two bids comparable if one omits design, QA, launch, or maintenance. Clutch recommends a detailed scope or RFP to improve understanding of the total price.

Budget for the work after coding

App work does not necessarily end when a store release goes live. Updates, bug fixes, compatibility work, support, and new features may require further time and money. Keep these items visible in the budget rather than treating launch as the finish line. Clutch identifies coding, design, testing, deployment, and continuing app work as parts of app budgeting. Clutch’s budgeting guide discusses these cost areas.

Use a first-year worksheet to request estimates for the parts relevant to your product:

  • Discovery and scope definition.
  • UX and visual design.
  • Development and integrations.
  • QA, device testing, and fixes.
  • Store preparation and release.
  • Hosting and third-party service fees, where applicable; ask for current prices for the actual services chosen.
  • Post-launch bug fixes, compatibility work, updates, and support.
  • App-store transaction or service fees, if the business sells digital goods or services through a store billing system.

Google Play fees depend on factors including transaction type, program, market, and rollout timing. Its published page describes different structures for certain regions and other markets, so do not treat any one percentage as universal; verify the conditions that apply to your geography and monetization route. Google Play says 97% of developers distribute apps and use its developer tools at no charge, and that 99% of developers subject to a service fee are eligible for fees of 15% or less through programs. These are Google Play’s platform-published figures, not an estimate of fees for your app. Google Play’s service-fee information sets out the relevant terms.

Make testing and store submission part of the plan

Google Play says, “Apps should provide a stable, responsive, and engaging user experience.” Its policy does not allow apps that crash, lack adequate utility, or have limited functionality, and advises thorough testing to prevent crashes and bugs. Ask for a concrete QA plan and establish who addresses problems discovered before submission. Google Play’s functionality, content, and user-experience policy explains these expectations.

For Google Play, the console requirements include accurate app metadata, a privacy policy and completed Data safety section, working review access such as demo credentials when needed, and package-name registration. Google advises organization registration for financial, health, VPN, or government services. These are Google Play-specific details; check current rules and any category-specific conditions before launch. The evidence here does not establish current Apple submission requirements, so verify requirements separately for every planned store. Google Play’s app setup guidance describes its console requirements.

Mistakes that make a first app costlier or harder to launch

  • Asking for a quote from an idea alone. Turn the idea into user tasks, first-release features, platform needs, integrations, and exclusions first. Otherwise, providers may be pricing different projects. Clutch’s hiring guide recommends setting out goals, platform, features, and timing.
  • Comparing proposals with different scopes. Check whether each includes the same design, development, testing, launch, and maintenance work, along with clear assumptions and exclusions.
  • Treating a directory average as your quote. Clutch’s reported figures describe reviewed projects and listed provider rates; they do not establish the price of a particular app. Your requirements and the provider’s assumptions matter.
  • Budgeting for coding but not release and support. Include design, QA, deployment, relevant store fees, and post-launch work as separate budget lines.
  • Accepting a vague testing promise. Establish what will be tested, who provides access and content, how acceptance is shown, and who fixes defects before submission.
  • Assuming store review is automatic. For Google Play, plan for metadata, privacy and Data safety details, and review credentials where needed; check current rules for each store.
  • Choosing two native builds without weighing upkeep. Confirm that users need both platforms and compare the lifecycle cost, not only the initial build.

Protect the handoff and your ability to move forward

Before signing, ask who will control or receive the app’s source code, design files, accounts, and other project materials, and what happens if the relationship ends. The right terms depend on the parties and jurisdiction; there is no universal answer established here. Have an appropriate lawyer review the contract, ownership, licensing, confidentiality, privacy, and exit terms. This is a prompt to get tailored legal review, not legal advice or a substitute for it.
