Getting a massive amount of annoying popups – Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Help

Massive popup storms usually aren’t “just ads.” They’re often caused by browser hijackers, adware, or more serious malware like trojans and spyware that manipulate notifications, inject scripts, or redirect you to shady pages.

This guide is written as practical malware removal help: you’ll triage where the popups originate, stop them immediately, then remove the underlying junk using well-proven tools and exact settings.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

If you can, don’t click anything in the popups while you work. Many infections use your clicks to install payloads.

Why you’re seeing massive popups (and what they usually mean)

“Virus,” “trojan,” “spyware,” and “malware” get used loosely. In popup cases, the symptom is the same, but the cause varies.

Common causes

  • Browser hijacker: Changes homepage, search engine, or new tab behavior and keeps triggering redirects.
  • Adware / PUP: Pushes fake alerts, survey prompts, “Update your browser” popups, and notification spam.
  • Malvertising: The site you’re on is serving popup payloads (sometimes via compromised redirects).
  • Trojan or backdoor: Enables remote control or installs additional components that re-infect after removal.
  • Spyware: Steals browsing data, credentials, or system info; sometimes bundled with adware.

Notification popups vs window popups

One crucial distinction: many “popups” are actually browser notifications (from a permissions site), while others are classic new windows triggered by injected scripts.

First triage: identify the source and classify the problem

Before removing anything, spend 2–5 minutes mapping where the popups come from. That determines the fastest fix.

Quick checks

  • Do popups appear in one browser only? If yes, start with browser permissions, extensions, and reset.
  • Do popups appear even on a different browser (like Edge when Chrome is infected)? This suggests system-level changes or a network/proxy issue.
  • Do you see popups from random sites saying you won a prize or your device is infected? Often notification spam or adware.
  • Do popups show “Your PC is infected” with phone numbers? Common scam pattern. Treat it as malicious.
  • Any new extensions installed recently? That’s a top suspect.

Check notification permissions (often the smoking gun)

If the popups are notification-style (usually bottom-right on Windows or similar), you need to remove site permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prerequisites before you start removing malware

  • Write down symptoms: Which browser, which sites, frequency, and whether notifications are involved.
  • Have admin access (a standard account may limit tools).
  • Unplug non-essential USB devices temporarily.
  • Update your system if you can do so safely.
  • Don’t install “free” cleaner apps from popup ads; many are PUPs themselves.

Immediate actions that stop popups right now

Use these first so the system becomes usable while you clean.

1) Disconnect from the internet temporarily

Turn off Wi‑Fi or unplug Ethernet. This prevents the malware from downloading more components while you start removal.

2) Close suspicious tabs and windows

If a specific site triggers the storm, close it immediately. Don’t interact with download buttons inside popups.

Windows malware removal help (fast, reliable workflow)

This workflow uses built-in protection first, then a reputable second opinion tool, then adware removal and browser reset.

Step 1: Run Microsoft Defender Antivirus

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Go to Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan, then click Scan now.

If Defender finds threats, choose Remove (not “Quarantine only”), then restart.

Step 2: Use a second opinion scanner (Malwarebytes)

  1. Download and install Malwarebytes from the official site.
  2. Update virus definitions inside the app.
  3. Run Scan (choose Threat Scan or Custom scan if you’re offered it).
  4. Select anything marked Adware, PUP.Optional, or malicious, then click Quarantine and/or Remove based on the prompt.

Step 3: Remove adware with an ad cleaner (AdwCleaner)

AdwCleaner (often shipped by Malwarebytes or available as a separate tool) targets common hijacker components and leftover junk.

  1. Run the cleaner and click Scan.
  2. Review items like Browser extensions, scheduled tasks, and services.
  3. Choose Clean, then reboot if requested.

Step 4: Reset browser settings (best chance to stop hijackers)

Do this after the scan tools remove extensions and permissions. If you reset first, you may lose detection context.

Exact steps are in the browser section. For Chrome/Edge, this typically includes restoring default search engine, home page, and resetting site settings.

Step 5: Check persistence with Windows Autoruns (if the problem returns)

If popups return within hours, you likely have persistence (scheduled tasks, Run keys, or injected startup items). Autoruns is the fastest way to spot it.

  1. Download Sysinternals Autoruns from Microsoft.
  2. Run it as Administrator.
  3. Look at tabs like Logon, Scheduled Tasks, and Services.
  4. Disable clearly suspicious entries (random names, unsigned binaries, paths in AppData or Temp).
  5. Re-scan after changes and reboot.

Only disable what you understand. If unsure, leave it and use additional scanning first.

macOS popup and malware removal help

macOS malware is less common than Windows, but popup storms still happen via adware apps, malicious browser profiles, or notification spam.

Step 1: Remove suspicious login items and background apps

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to General > Login Items.
  3. Remove unknown items or anything installed right when the popups began.
  4. Also check Profiles (search in System Settings). Remove profiles you don’t recognize.

Step 2: Uninstall recently added suspicious apps

  1. Open Finder > Applications.
  2. Sort by Date Added.
  3. Uninstall apps that match scam/adware patterns (browser “optimizers,” “security cleaners,” unknown VPN/proxy tools).
  4. Empty the Trash.

Step 3: Use Malwarebytes for Mac (second opinion)

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes for macOS, then remove detected items. macOS adware often hides in browser support directories.

Step 4: Browser reset + notification permission cleanup

Most popup persistence on macOS is browser-level. Reset browser settings and revoke notification permissions as described below.

Remove adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs)

Not all popup causes are classic viruses. A lot are PUPs that bundle “value adds” with ad-supported behavior.

How to spot PUP behavior

  • Installer bundles during software updates (“Install recommended components”).
  • New search engine or homepage you can’t fully change.
  • Extensions installed without your consent.
  • Popups that recommend software with generic names or scary “security alerts.”

What to do during tool scans

  • When a scanner offers Adware or PUP.Optional, treat it as suspicious if it correlates with the popup timeframe.
  • Quarantine/remove items, then reboot.
  • After reboot, verify notification permissions and extensions again.

Check persistence mechanisms (what keeps bringing popups back)

If the popups disappear after scanning but return later, persistence is usually involved.

Look for these on Windows

  • Scheduled Tasks that run a script or executable from %AppData% or %Temp%.
  • Run keys in the registry that start malware at login.
  • Services installed by a trojan.
  • Browser startup pages (policy-driven or extension-driven).

Look for these on macOS

  • Login items added under System Settings > General > Login Items.
  • Unknown Launch Agents/Daemons (advanced; use tools if you’re comfortable).
  • Browser profiles or managed settings that reapply permissions.

Advanced troubleshooting when scans come back “clean”

Sometimes tools miss threats or the issue is driven by an external factor (malvertising, ad-block bypass, or an incorrect device permission).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try a clean browser profile

  • Chrome/Edge: Create a new profile and test whether the popups appear there.
  • If popups vanish in a new profile, the issue is almost certainly browser data: extensions, permissions, or cached injected scripts.

Test in a fresh machine environment (quick isolation)

  • Try a different user account on the same PC.
  • Or use another device on the same network.
  • If only one account on one device is affected, persistence is localized (browser extensions, user-level startup items, notification permissions).

Check DNS and proxy settings

Some infections change DNS or install proxy settings to redirect you. If you’re comfortable, check network adapter settings and browser proxy settings for anything you didn’t set.

Consider a router-level redirect

If every device on a network gets redirected/popups, suspect router DNS hijack or compromised firmware. You may need to reboot the router and review DNS settings and firmware version.

Common mistakes that make popups worse

  • Ignoring notification permissions. Scanners can’t “fix” a permission change inside the browser if the site is still allowed.
  • Installing more “cleaner” software from popup ads.
  • Resetting the browser without removing persistence. Hijackers often come back if startup tasks remain.
  • Skipping updates. Outdated browsers and OS builds have known issues attackers abuse.
  • Not rebooting after removals. Many components stay loaded until restart.

Prevention checklist to avoid repeat infections

  • Keep Windows/macOS and browsers updated (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari).
  • Review and remove browser notification permissions monthly.
  • Install extensions only from official stores; avoid “download manager” or “coupon helper” type extensions unless you trust them.
  • During installers, choose Custom and uncheck optional offers.
  • Use reputable security software and let it run scheduled scans.
  • If you entered a password recently, consider changing it after the system is clean (and use MFA).

FAQs

How do I know if it’s a virus or just adware?

If popups are tied to a browser permission (Notifications) or a specific extension/homepage change, it’s frequently adware or a browser hijacker. If you see unauthorized accounts, unexpected remote access, or suspicious background network activity, treat it as a potential trojan/spyware case and run multiple scanners.

Can Windows Security alone remove everything?

Often it handles many threats, but popup storms can come from adware/PUPs that are more effectively caught by a second scanner. Running Microsoft Defender + a second opinion tool (like Malwarebytes) gives a better chance of full cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my browser reset doesn’t stop the popups?

That usually means persistence outside the browser: scheduled tasks, modified startup items, or a notification permission that keeps getting re-granted by a managed policy/profile. Re-check notification permissions and run an adware cleaner plus persistence checks.

Are popup scams dangerous even if I never click them?

They can be. Some threats trigger through scripts or drive-by downloads when a tab loads. Still, your risk is higher if you click “Allow notifications,” download files, or enter credentials.

Should I reinstall Windows or macOS?

Reinstall is a last resort when you can’t eradicate persistence or you suspect a deep compromise. If scans, persistence checks, and browser reset don’t fix the issue after multiple attempts, reinstalling (and then changing passwords from a clean device) can be faster than months of whack-a-mole.

Bottom Line

Massive popup storms are usually fixable by combining notification permission cleanup, extension removal, browser reset, and at least two layers of scanning. Use malware removal help tools in a consistent workflow so you don’t miss persistence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If popups come back after cleanup, stop treating it like a one-time nuisance and focus on scheduled tasks, startup entries, and policy-driven browser behavior.
