Get Your Roku TV Out of Store Demo Mode: Reset and Return to Home Use

If your Roku TV keeps playing promotional videos, showing retail messages, or reverting picture settings, it is probably in Store (demo) mode. Roku’s documented way to leave that mode is to perform a full factory reset and, during Guided Setup, choose Set up for home use. This procedure is intended for Roku televisions; a Roku streaming player does not use the same television Store-mode setup.

A factory reset is destructive: it unlinks the TV, removes installed apps, deletes account information and preferences, and returns the set to its initial setup state. Gather your Wi-Fi details, Roku account credentials, app passwords and any parental-control PIN before starting.

What Roku calls demo mode

Roku’s television setup distinguishes between configuring a set for ordinary household viewing and configuring it for a retail demonstration. The retail choice is commonly described as Store mode, demo mode or store demo. A TV in this state may cycle through promotional screens, launch demonstration videos, or restore showroom picture settings after you change them.

The wording and behavior can vary by television manufacturer and software version. Roku’s own setup guide tells owners to choose Set up for home use unless they are preparing a television for a store display. See the current guide at Roku’s Roku TV setup instructions.

This article addresses that television mode. It is not a universal fix for every Roku-branded streaming player, soundbar or accessory. If you are using a separate player connected to a non-Roku television, first check whether the promotional behavior is coming from the television’s retail settings rather than from the player.

Confirm that Store mode is the problem

Resetting a television takes time, so check the symptoms before erasing it. Store mode is a strong possibility when several of these occur together:

  • Promotional slides or demonstration videos appear without you starting them.
  • Picture, audio or energy-saving choices revert after the TV has been idle or restarted.
  • The set behaves as though it is on a showroom floor, with retail prompts or looping content.
  • A previous setup accidentally selected a store or demo option.

TCL describes these symptoms for its Roku TV models and recommends a factory reset when Store mode cannot be changed or the television continues to act like a showroom unit. That advice is specific to TCL Roku TVs; other manufacturers can use different labels or recovery controls. Read the manufacturer guidance at TCL’s Store Mode to Home Mode instructions if your set carries that brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a pattern rather than a single unusual screen. A normal channel, app or HDMI source can display its own advertising, and a connected device can change what appears on the screen. If demonstrations appear on every input and the TV repeatedly restores showroom picture settings, the television’s setup mode is more likely than one app being at fault.

Why a full reset is required

On a Roku TV that was placed in Store mode during Guided Setup, the supported way back to Home mode is a complete factory reset. Roku’s TV User Guide explains that the full reset is the only choice for switching from Store mode to Home mode after the store option was selected accidentally. In other words, there may not be a separate “turn off demo” switch inside the picture menu.

The reset removes the setup decision that put the television into the retail configuration. During the fresh Guided Setup that follows, the home-use choice writes the correct configuration back to the TV. Resetting without completing that setup, or choosing the store option again, will not solve the problem.

Prepare before erasing the TV

A reset cannot preserve your current configuration. Make the following preparations while the television is still usable:

  • Locate the email address and password for the Roku account linked to the TV.
  • Write down the Wi-Fi network name and password, especially if the router uses a hidden network.
  • Check that you know the sign-in details for streaming, music and other apps you plan to reinstall.
  • Have the parental-control PIN available if the setup process requests it.
  • Photograph or note any picture, audio, accessibility and network settings you want to reproduce later.
  • Keep the remote nearby, or install the official Roku mobile app on a phone connected to the same local network so it can serve as a controller when supported.

Content stored in individual streaming accounts is not deleted from those services, but the TV will forget the app installations and sign-ins saved locally. A reset also removes the device’s link to your Roku account.

Plan for the account work as well as the reset itself. The Roku account remains yours, but the television’s link to it is removed. Each channel or app may require its own sign-in method after reinstalling. If a service uses a one-time activation code, keep access to the phone or computer needed to complete that activation. None of those credentials can be recovered from the reset TV.

Reset a Roku TV from its menus

Use the menu route when the remote can navigate the television. Roku lists this as the standard reset process for a Roku TV.

  1. Press the Home button on the Roku remote to open the main screen.
  2. Highlight Settings, then open System.
  3. Select Advanced system settings.
  4. Choose Factory reset.
  5. Select Factory reset everything. Do not choose a partial option if the goal is to remove Store mode.
  6. Read the warning, enter any requested on-screen code, and confirm. The television will restart and return to its factory-new setup state.

The exact labels above are the path published by Roku; minor wording changes can appear on particular models or software releases. Roku’s reset reference explains the consequences and alternative controls at Factory reset your Roku TV, player or projector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not interrupt the set while it is confirming or restarting. A reset is not complete merely because the screen briefly goes black; wait for the first Guided Setup screen. If the TV returns to the Home screen with your old apps and account still present, the full-reset confirmation was not completed and Store mode has not necessarily been removed.

Select Home Use during Guided Setup

After the reset, the TV launches Guided Setup as if it has never been configured. This is the point at which Store mode is either avoided or selected again.

  1. Choose your country and language when prompted.
  2. Connect the television to your Wi-Fi network and allow it to check for software updates.
  3. When setup asks how the TV will be used, select Set up for home use.
  4. Continue through activation and link the television to your Roku account.
  5. Reinstall the channels and apps you need, then sign in to each service.
  6. Reapply picture, sound, accessibility, parental-control and network preferences.

Roku’s wording is explicit: Select Set up for home use, unless you are configuring the TV for a store demo. Choosing the store option is what puts the television back into its retail configuration, so do not select it for a household installation. Roku’s setup documentation is available at support.roku.com.

If you are helping someone else set up the TV, explain this choice before handing over the remote. “Store” can sound like a temporary display setting, but it is a deliberate setup path for retail demonstrations. For a bedroom, living room, office or other personal installation, the home-use option is the appropriate one.

What a full factory reset removes

Use this table to decide whether you are ready to proceed. These effects apply to the TV itself, not to the online accounts held by the individual services.

Item Result of “Factory reset everything” What you must do afterward
Roku account link The television is unlinked. Link it again during Guided Setup.
Installed apps and channels Removed from the television. Reinstall the channels you want.
App sign-ins Deleted from local storage. Enter each service’s credentials again.
Picture, sound and network preferences Returned to defaults. Configure them again for your room and network.
Parental controls and local preferences Cleared or returned to initial setup values. Set your controls and preferences again.
Personal files on the TV Removed from the device. Restore only what your services synchronize online.

Roku describes the television as returning to a factory-new state, which is why the setup and sign-in work cannot be skipped. A factory reset is therefore also the sensible handoff step when selling, returning or giving away the TV: the next owner can link their own account instead of inheriting yours.

If the menus are inaccessible

A physical reset is a fallback when the screen cannot be navigated, the remote is unavailable, or the TV is stuck before the Home screen. Roku does not use one universal button location or sequence for every television. Depending on the series, the reset control may be a recessed button, a pinhole or a combination involving the TV’s physical controls.

Find the instructions for the exact model rather than applying a timing rule from another set. Roku’s general reset page lists model-dependent alternatives, and its unlinked-mode procedure describes holding a supported TV’s physical Reset button for about 10 seconds. That duration is not a universal instruction: holding a control too long can send some televisions into Recovery Mode instead of performing the ordinary factory reset. Consult Roku’s unlinked-mode reset guidance and the model’s own manual before pressing or holding a button.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the model number before attempting a hardware reset; it is often printed on the rear label or in the TV’s settings. Use the instructions for that exact series, and make sure the button you found is actually the reset control rather than power, input or a service control. If a procedure calls for a pin or paper clip, apply only the pressure and timing specified for that model.

If your television still responds to network commands, the Roku mobile app can provide menu control, allowing you to use the normal Settings path without buying another remote. A compatible replacement Roku TV remote is an optional alternative when the original is lost or damaged; verify compatibility with the exact television model before purchasing.

Settings-menu reset versus physical reset

Both approaches ultimately return the set to Guided Setup. The practical differences are about access and risk:

Route Use it when Important limitation
Settings-menu reset The TV reaches the Home screen and accepts remote or app commands. You must navigate the menus and confirm the destructive reset.
Physical reset The menus cannot be reached or controlled. Button location and sequence vary by model; an incorrect or prolonged hold can invoke Recovery Mode.

Whichever route you take, the decisive setup choice is still Set up for home use. A reset by itself does not guarantee that the TV will remain out of Store mode if the store option is selected again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The menu route is preferable when available because the on-screen warning identifies the action and the TV can guide you through confirmation. The physical route is a recovery method, not a shortcut that preserves apps or settings. Both routes erase the same local configuration once a full factory reset is completed.

Finish the first home-use setup

Once the TV has restarted in Home Use mode, complete the practical steps that are easy to overlook:

  1. Allow all prompted system updates to finish before judging whether the promotional behavior is gone.
  2. Test the Home, Back, volume and input controls, then confirm that the TV stays on the selected input after a restart.
  3. Open the picture and audio menus and set your preferred modes; these values now belong to the home configuration.
  4. Install only the channels and apps you use, then sign in directly through each service’s approved screen.
  5. Reconnect any antenna, game console, sound system or other HDMI equipment and rename inputs if desired.
  6. Set sleep, bandwidth, accessibility and privacy options according to the people using the TV.

Do not treat the initial update or app installation delay as a return of demo mode. A newly reset TV can spend several minutes downloading software and channel information before the Home screen behaves normally.

Check the television after one complete power cycle rather than relying only on the first screen. Store-mode symptoms should not return after restarting when Home Use was selected. If only one app displays promotional material, investigate that app instead of repeating the TV reset.

When promotional content still appears

If retail videos or automatic picture changes continue after a correctly completed reset and Home Use selection, work through these checks:

  • Verify the mode choice: Entering Store mode during Guided Setup is the most direct explanation. Reset again only after confirming that the home option was selected.
  • Check the television model: Manufacturer-specific firmware can add retail features or use a different reset control. Follow the support page for that exact model.
  • Separate TV behavior from an attached device: Disconnect streaming players, USB media and HDMI sources temporarily. If the promotion disappears, the source device or input may be responsible rather than Roku TV Store mode.
  • Check for a showroom or hospitality configuration: Sets supplied through a business, hotel or retailer can have management settings outside the ordinary consumer setup. Contact the seller or manufacturer if a normal reset does not clear them.
  • Allow updates to complete: Interrupting a restart or update can leave the TV in an incomplete state. Keep it powered and connected until the on-screen process finishes.
  • Avoid repeated physical-button experiments: If the screen reports Recovery Mode or shows an unfamiliar recovery prompt, stop using button combinations and follow the model-specific recovery instructions.

For TCL Roku TVs, TCL’s support article specifically treats an unchangeable Store mode or recurring showroom behavior as a reason to use a factory reset. Other brands may require their own escalation path.

Keep notes about what happens after each check. Whether the behavior appears on the Home screen, one input or one app helps support staff distinguish a television configuration issue from an attached-device problem. Have the model number and the steps already attempted ready when contacting the manufacturer or seller.

Do Roku streaming players have this Store-mode fix?

The Store/Home choice described here belongs to Roku TV Guided Setup. A separate Roku streaming player normally appears as an input on the television and does not configure the television’s retail picture demonstrations. If only the player’s menus or screens look unusual, reset the player through its own system settings and check the television’s input and picture menus separately. Do not factory-reset the TV merely because a player needs attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Conversely, if the television itself is looping demonstrations or reverting its picture settings across every input, treat it as a Roku TV configuration issue and use the TV reset procedure above.

This distinction matters because resetting the wrong device creates extra work without addressing the symptom. Identify whether the promotional message is generated by the TV’s own Home screen, by a connected Roku player, or by another HDMI source before choosing a reset path.

How to avoid re-entering demo mode

  • During any future reset or initial setup, choose Set up for home use unless the set is genuinely being prepared for a retail display.
  • Keep the TV’s model number and the manufacturer’s support page bookmarked so that a physical reset can be performed correctly if needed.
  • Store Roku account, Wi-Fi and app credentials in a password manager rather than writing them on the television.
  • Before lending or selling the TV, deliberately use the factory-reset process and let the next owner perform Guided Setup with their own account.
  • Do not hold a recessed reset button beyond the model’s documented procedure; an overly long hold can trigger Recovery Mode.

When a reset is the right answer

For a Roku TV accidentally configured as a store display, Roku’s supported route is not a hidden toggle in the picture menu. It is a full factory reset followed by Home Use selection in Guided Setup. Use the menu route whenever possible, reserve physical controls for model-specific situations, and plan for the account, app and preference reconfiguration that follows.

Take the extra minute to confirm the television is actually in Store mode before erasing it. Once the symptoms match and the model-specific instructions are at hand, the process is straightforward: back up the information you need, choose Factory reset everything, select Set up for home use, and rebuild the TV’s apps and preferences.

Will resetting remove my Roku account?

The TV is unlinked and its local account information is removed, but your Roku account itself is not deleted. Link the TV to that account again during setup.

Do I have to reinstall my apps after the reset?

Yes. Installed channels and apps are removed from the television, and saved app sign-ins are cleared. Reinstall the services you want and sign in again.

Can I leave Store mode without a factory reset?

Roku’s TV User Guide says a full factory reset is the required choice when Store mode was selected accidentally during Guided Setup. The reset must be followed by choosing Set up for home use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I lost the Roku remote?

If the TV can communicate on your network, the official Roku mobile app may control the menus so you can use the normal reset path. A compatible replacement Roku TV remote is another option; check compatibility first.

Is holding the reset button for 10 seconds safe on every Roku TV?

No. Roku describes about a 10-second hold for a supported procedure, but physical controls and timing vary by model. Holding a button too long can trigger Recovery Mode, so follow the exact model instructions.

Why does my Roku TV keep showing store demos after a reset?

Confirm that Guided Setup ended with Set up for home use, not the store option. If the problem remains, check model-specific manufacturer guidance, disconnect attached devices, allow updates to finish and contact the seller or manufacturer about showroom or hospitality management settings.

Does this fix apply to a Roku streaming player?

The Store/Home choice applies to Roku TV Guided Setup. A separate Roku player normally does not control the television’s Store-mode picture demonstrations; diagnose and reset the player separately if only its screens are affected.

The Bottom Line

To remove Store or demo mode from a Roku TV, use Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset > Factory reset everything, then select Set up for home use during Guided Setup. The reset unlinks the TV, removes apps and local preferences, and requires your accounts and settings to be added again. Use model-specific hardware instructions only when the menus cannot be reached.
