To connect a surround sound system to a Vizio Smart TV, use HDMI ARC/eARC if both the TV and receiver or soundbar have matching ARC/eARC ports. If not, use optical audio when both devices have optical ports, or RCA for a compatible analog stereo connection. Check the exact model manuals and port labels first: connections and audio settings vary by model.
Choose a connection both devices support
Find the TV and receiver or soundbar model numbers, then check the manuals and the labels beside their ports. Vizio notes that port locations and counts vary by model. A connection works only when the TV’s audio output matches an input on the audio system.

| Connection | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | Both devices have compatible ports labeled ARC or eARC. | Connect the labeled ports at both ends. eARC functions require eARC support in the connected audio system; check both manuals. Vizio E55-C1 manual; Vizio V655-H9 manual. |
| Optical/SPDIF | The TV has an optical audio output and the receiver or soundbar has an optical input. | Supported formats depend on the exact devices, source, and settings. The formats illustrated in a manual are not a guarantee for every setup. Vizio E55-C1 manual; Vizio D65x-G4 specifications. |
| RCA analog | Both devices have matching analog audio ports. | Vizio’s older manual shows RCA as a stereo connection, not a digital multichannel route. Vizio E55-C1 manual. |
Compare port compatibility first, then check which audio formats both devices support and what output settings the TV provides. Vizio’s published specifications illustrate that capabilities differ: the M43Q6M-K04 specifications list HDMI ARC/eARC and SPDIF, while soundbar specifications describe their own connection options, such as those for the M512a-H6 and SB2021n-J6. These examples are not a compatibility chart for every model.

- Identify both models and ports. Look up the model numbers in the manuals or inspect the rear panels for HDMI ARC/eARC, optical/SPDIF, or RCA audio labels. Match a TV output to an input on the audio system.
- Turn both devices off. Vizio’s E55-C1 manual directs users to power off before connecting.
- Connect one matching path. Use ARC/eARC at both ends, optical output to optical input, or RCA outputs to the corresponding analog input. A regular HDMI port is not necessarily an ARC port.
- Power on and select the input. Turn on the TV and audio system, then select the connected input on the receiver or soundbar if required.
- Set the TV’s audio output. Use the audio settings described in the manual for your specific model.
An HDMI cable can carry the connection only if both devices support the required ARC/eARC feature; a cable cannot add that capability to a device that lacks it. Likewise, buy an optical cable only when both devices have matching optical ports.

Set Vizio audio output options
Menu names and available formats vary by Vizio model. In the V655-H9 V-Series manual, audio settings are under Menu > Audio, with a Digital Audio Out option for optical and HDMI ARC and an eARC toggle. Treat this as a model-specific example, not a universal menu path. The manual also states: “Your connected sound bar or audio receiver must support eARC in order to receive uncompressed audio.” See the V655-H9 V-Series manual for its setting details.

- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

- VocalMatrix Algorithm: Powered by Ultimea’s VocalMatrix, the system intelligently extracts vocals and dynamically redistributes them across rear surround channels through 7.1 discrete outputs. By analyzing the original soundstage, it maintains accurate vocal positioning while preserving the surrounding ambient sound.
- 7.1ch Surround Sound System for TV: This 7.1ch sound bar includes 3 main channels and 4 surround sound speakers. SurroundX technology delivers precise audio with 99.99% detail accuracy offering a more immersive surround sound experience than a 5.1 surround sound system.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. VoiceMX boosts 120Hz-6kHz vocal range with dynamic EQ and gain control for clear dialogue in any scene.
- BassMX Technology: Powered by BassMX technology, the subwoofer features an 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 6.1L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. With extended bass response down to 45 Hz, it delivers deeper punch and better control for action scenes, explosions, and music beats. This larger acoustic chamber creates a wider soundstage and stronger physical impact than traditional compact subwoofers.
- 4 Adjustable Surround Speakers: The Aura A40 Pro soundbar features 2 wired front surround speakers connected directly to the soundbar, and 2 rear surround speakers with a hybrid connection—the right rear speaker connects wirelessly to the soundbar, while the left rear speaker connects via wire to the right rear speaker. This design ensures precise sound projection while minimizing cable clutter and maximizing space utilization.

Troubleshoot silence or unexpected audio
- No sound: Confirm that the TV output and audio-system input are the matching ports, and that the receiver or soundbar is set to that input.
- ARC/eARC does not work: Verify that each cable is connected to the port labeled ARC or eARC, rather than an ordinary HDMI port, and confirm support in both manuals.
- Audio format is missing or different from expected: Check the manuals for the exact TV, audio system, and source, then review the TV’s output setting. There is no single PCM, Auto, or Digital setting established as correct for every Vizio model and connection.
- RCA connection sounds like stereo: That is consistent with the analog stereo route shown in Vizio’s older manual; RCA is not its documented digital multichannel connection.
