Google’s Quick Tap gesture is officially limited to Pixel 4a (5G) and newer phones, but the open-source Tap, Tap project ports the same back-of-phone gesture to compatible Android 7.0+ devices. It detects a double or triple tap with the phone’s motion sensors and can trigger shortcuts such as screenshots, flashlight, apps, system navigation and Tasker tasks.
What Pixel Quick Tap does
On supported Google phones, open Settings > System > Gestures > Quick tap to enable a double tap on the back of the device. Google lists actions including taking a screenshot, playing or pausing media, showing notifications and opening an app. Google Pixel Help states: “Important: This feature only works on Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones.”

That restriction applies to Google’s built-in implementation, not to every Android phone. Tap, Tap is an independent open-source port by KieronQuinn. Its project description calls it “a port of the double tap on back of device gesture from Pixels running Android 12 to any Android 7.0+ device*.” The asterisk matters: hardware and software compatibility still vary by handset.

Tap, Tap supports both double and triple taps. The project lists more than 50 possible actions, allowing the gesture to do far more than launch one application.

- Use the “Quick Tap to Snap” action.
Profiles let you limit a gesture to a context, such as a particular foreground app, the screen being off or media playback being active. This prevents a back tap from behaving identically in every situation. For example, a profile could reserve a triple tap for media controls while another profile handles a double tap only when a selected app is open.
Compatibility and hardware requirements
Tap, Tap targets Android 7.0 and later, whereas Google’s native feature starts at Pixel 4a (5G). The phone must expose both an accelerometer and a gyroscope; without those sensors, the app cannot reliably recognize the motion pattern.

The README also warns that some configurations may require a compatible Pixel device or root access. That is not a universal requirement, but it means an installation that works on one Android skin may not work on another. Check the project’s compatibility guidance for your exact model before changing system settings or rooting the phone.

How to install Tap, Tap
- Check the handset first. Confirm that it runs Android 7.0 or newer and includes an accelerometer and gyroscope. Search the phone’s specifications or use a sensor-information utility already trusted on the device.
- Get the app from the project’s release or distribution links. Because this is commonly sideloaded rather than installed through Google’s built-in Pixel settings, verify the package’s origin and review Android’s warning about installing from outside the Play Store.
- Install and open Tap, Tap. Android may require you to allow installation from the browser or file manager that opened the package. Turn that permission back off afterward if you do not need it for other installs.
- Review the requested access. The gesture service relies on motion sensors and may use Android accessibility access to perform actions such as Home, Back, screenshots or app launching. Grant only the permissions you understand, and inspect the service’s Android settings entry before enabling it.
- Choose the gesture and actions. Select double tap, triple tap or both, then assign actions and create profiles for app, screen-state or media conditions.
- Tune detection. Tap, Tap offers eight detection models trained for different phone sizes plus finer sensitivity controls. Start conservatively, then adjust if ordinary handling triggers the gesture or intentional taps are missed.
- Test under normal use. Try the gesture with the case fitted, the screen on and off, and media playing if you created a media profile. If it fails, revisit sensor availability, battery restrictions and the project’s model-specific compatibility notes.
The TapTap2 README says the project can be built like any Android app: open the source in Android Studio and run it. Building from source is an option for readers who want to inspect or modify the code, but it requires Android Studio and the project’s build requirements. The repositories do not provide one universal setup sequence for every manufacturer’s Android skin.

Tap, Tap compared with another back-tap app
Google Play also lists BackTap: Tap Actions, which advertises double- and triple-tap shortcuts for Back, Home, Recents, notifications, Quick Settings, screenshots, Assistant, flashlight and installed apps. The listing does not establish that it is open source or that it uses Tap, Tap’s implementation, so treat it as an alternative rather than an equivalent.
| Capability | Tap, Tap | BackTap: Tap Actions |
|---|---|---|
| Android compatibility | Android 7.0+ target; exact handset support varies | Not stated in the cited listing |

Fixes for common problems
The gesture never triggers
- Confirm both required sensors are present and enabled.
- Try another detection model for your phone size.
- Increase sensitivity gradually rather than selecting the most aggressive setting immediately.
- Check whether Android’s battery-management rules have stopped the background service.
- Review the project’s compatibility notes; some devices need root or a special configuration.
False triggers while handling the phone
- Lower sensitivity or select a different model.
- Use a profile that disables the gesture in apps where accidental taps are disruptive.
- Retest with the case installed, since case thickness changes how motion reaches the sensors.
An action does not work
Actions that control navigation, screenshots or other system functions can depend on Android accessibility access and manufacturer restrictions. Recheck the enabled accessibility service, then test a simple action such as launching an app. If only privileged actions fail, the handset may require the root or compatibility condition described by the project.

Is Tap, Tap worth using?
For a non-Pixel phone with Android 7.0 or later, the app is the closest documented way to reproduce Pixel-style back tapping without changing the hardware. Its open-source code, multiple tap patterns, conditional profiles and extensive action list make it more flexible than a single fixed shortcut. The trade-off is that it is not a Google system feature: sensor quality, Android skin behavior, battery management and permission policies determine how dependable it will be on a particular device.
