The four-month Google Play Music offer was a real, limited promotion reported in 2017. Google Play Music was discontinued in 2020; YouTube Music is Google’s successor service. Any trial available today depends on your account and region.
What was the four-month Google Play Music offer?
There were at least two separate four-month promotions in 2017, not one offer that remained available throughout the year. PhoneArena reported on September 8, 2017 that Google was offering up to four free months in the United States and United Kingdom. Android Authority reported on November 22, 2017 that four free months were also included in Google Play’s Black Friday promotions, whose availability varied by market.
PhoneArena reported that the subscription would cost $9.99 per month in the United States or £7.99 per month in the United Kingdom after the promotion. Those are historical September 2017 prices, not current YouTube Music prices.
Who qualified, and what happened after the trial?
The September promotion was reported in both the United States and United Kingdom, but the available contemporary reporting does not establish a universal official eligibility rule. New subscribers were the main audience; some existing or returning subscribers reportedly saw an offer, but that was not guaranteed. Country, subscription history, and previous trials could affect whether an account qualified or received the full four months. PhoneArena attributed some of its eligibility details to Reddit users, rather than to published Google terms.

Why the old offer no longer works
Google announced on August 4, 2020, that YouTube Music would replace Google Play Music. Google Play Music was later discontinued; Google’s shutdown page says it is no longer available. Old signup links therefore cannot activate the four-month promotion. Avoid unofficial activation pages and old app downloads claiming to restore the service.

During the transition, Google offered users a way to transfer library data—including playlists, uploads, purchases, and likes—to YouTube Music. That was a migration process at the time, not a guarantee that every former user’s old content remains accessible today or that a past subscription grants a current trial. Check your own account for any content you expect to find.

Why a YouTube Music trial may not appear
Google’s current trial rules say introductory trials are generally for first-time members. Some people who canceled at least six months earlier may qualify for an introductory offer, and only one introductory trial is allowed per 12-month period. Extended trials can have different restrictions, including a three-year interval after cancellation. Payment information is required, and a trial generally renews at the current displayed price unless canceled. These rules do not promise any particular offer or duration for an individual account; check Google’s trial and promotion terms.
Country verification, billing details, VPN or proxy use, and account type can also affect sign-up. Some Workspace accounts may not qualify for individual or family memberships unless they are eligible Workspace individual accounts. If an offer you expect does not appear, review Google’s sign-up troubleshooting guidance and confirm the account and country details.
