If you’re outside mainland China and want sites to see a China-geolocated IP, choose a VPN that advertises a China location. That is different from trying to reach blocked foreign services from inside mainland China: a China IP endpoint does not bypass the Great Firewall, and no VPN is guaranteed to work reliably there.
How to get a China IP address from abroad
Pick a service that offers a China location, sign in, and connect to that location in its app. The location label describes the IP address the service offers; it does not necessarily mean the server hardware is in mainland China. The two documented options below make that distinction important.

| Service | China location and plan | Physical routing and address type | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Its China IP page says a paid plan is required. The provider’s release notes say China Smart Routing was added on September 3, 2026. | Smart Routing uses Hong Kong as the physical location for China, according to Proton’s Smart Routing explanation. The cited China IP page does not state whether the address is dedicated or shared. | The provider advertises a China-geolocated IP. This does not establish access to any particular site. Proton VPN China IP details; release notes. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | PIA advertises a China IP that users can select in its app. | PIA describes the location as virtual and says its China IPs are shared, not dedicated. Its virtual-location support page maps Beijing to a physical server in Singapore. | The provider advertises a virtual Beijing/China location. This does not establish access to any particular site. PIA China IP details. |
These are provider descriptions, not independent tests. The cited material does not establish speed, uptime, residential-IP status, resistance to a particular site’s VPN blocks, or compatibility with every Chinese platform. Results can depend on the VPN account, your location, and the third-party service you are trying to use.

- Choose a service that explicitly offers a China location, and confirm whether that location requires a paid plan.
- Install the service’s app and sign in. For Proton, use a paid plan to access its China IP, as stated on its China IP page.
- Open the app’s server or location list, select China (or the advertised China city), and connect. App labels and screens may vary by platform and version.
- Check whether the site or service you need works with the resulting connection. A China location alone is not proof that a particular platform will accept it.
What a “China IP” location label does—and does not—mean
A VPN can offer an IP that geolocation services associate with China while routing the connection through hardware in another country. Proton’s China Smart Routing uses Hong Kong physically; PIA’s support documentation maps its virtual Beijing location to Singapore. Neither description is evidence of a server physically located in mainland China.

This distinction matters if you need a China-facing IP for a website, account, or region-specific service: the service may consider factors beyond an IP’s apparent location, and the cited provider pages do not promise that every Chinese site will work. They also do not establish that either option provides a residential IP.
Getting a China IP from abroad is not bypassing the Great Firewall
The two goals point in opposite directions. A China VPN location is for appearing to connect from China while you are elsewhere. Someone in mainland China trying to reach blocked foreign services needs a connection that can get out through the country’s filtering systems; connecting to a China IP does not solve that problem.

Proton says China uses DNS filtering, IP blocking, and deep packet inspection to detect and block VPN connections, and that its methods change. Proton explicitly says it cannot guarantee reliable operation inside mainland China. Its China support guidance recommends downloading, configuring, and testing the app before travel. It suggests enabling alternative routing and trying Stealth; if a connection fails, it advises trying nearby and other international server locations. These are the provider’s suggestions, not a guarantee of access.

- Before arrival, download the app, sign in, and configure it while you can still reach the provider’s services.
- Test the connection before travel. Proton recommends doing this in advance; a successful test does not guarantee it will work later.
- If access fails inside the country, use the provider’s current support instructions. Proton’s suggested alternatives are alternative routing, Stealth, and trying nearby or other international locations.
What the cited Chinese rules say about VPNs
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said in a 2017 notice that, without telecommunications-authority approval, organizations may not establish or rent dedicated lines—including VPNs—or other channels to conduct cross-border business operations. The MIIT notice concerns cross-border business activity; it should not be restated as a blanket finding that every personal VPN use in every circumstance is illegal.

In a later clarification, MIIT said the notice targets unauthorized cross-border telecommunications business by operators or entities without relevant approval. It said foreign-trade and multinational enterprises needing cross-border office connectivity may rent lines from telecommunications operators legally authorized to establish international communications gateways. The applicable rules can depend on the service and activity; businesses arranging cross-border connectivity should use authorized providers and seek advice for their particular circumstances.
