Germany’s Transport Ministry Says Tesla’s “FSD” Name Is Misleading

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport has said the name “FSD” is somewhat misleading for Tesla’s driver-assistance product, because the system does not take over the complete driving task. In a statement dated 6 October 2026, the ministry said European-level procedures to recognize the system are underway, and that Tesla has offered to rename it “Tesla Assisted Driving.” The ministry did not give a decision date, and the proposed name has not been confirmed as adopted.

What the ministry actually said

The statement, published on the ministry’s website under the title “Aktueller Stand bei der Genehmigung eines Tesla-Assistenzsystems” (“Current status of the approval of a Tesla assistance system”), comes from a page dated 6 October 2026. Transport Minister Steffen Bilger is identified on the page as supporting timely Europe-wide approval of the system. The core passage is institutional ministry text, not a personal remark by Bilger, and it reads in German:

In English, the passage says that the current name “FSD” is somewhat misleading. It is not a system that takes over the complete driving task. It is a driver-assistance system that can support certain driving tasks such as accelerating, braking and steering. The driver, however, must remain attentive at all times. Tesla has offered to rename the system “Tesla Assisted Driving.” This is a translation; use the German text if the exact wording matters.

Two details of the wording matter. The ministry said “somewhat misleading,” not “misleading” outright, which is how the phrase appears in headlines. And it described the product by its current name, “FSD – Full Self-Driving Supervised,” before raising the naming question.

Where approval stands

The ministry says procedures are currently taking place at European level to recognize Tesla’s driver-assistance system. That is the full extent of the status update in the statement. It does not name the European body or procedure involved, state which stage the file has reached, or give a date for a decision. It also does not say that approval has been granted.

For readers, the accurate summary as of 6 October 2026 is: European recognition is in progress, the ministry supports a timely outcome, and no completion date has been announced in the ministry’s statement. A new name, if adopted, would be a change to how the product is labelled. It would not by itself change the system’s legal category.

Why a product name is not a legal status

The distinction the ministry draws is between a driver-assistance function and an autonomous driving function, and German law treats them differently. Section 1e of the Road Traffic Act (Straßenverkehrsgesetz, StVG) sets out the conditions for operating a vehicle with an autonomous driving function. Those conditions include technical requirements, an operating permit or type approval, an approved operating area, and registration for road use. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) grants the operating permit when the statutory prerequisites are met.

Rank #3

Section 1e describes an autonomous function as one that performs the driving task independently within its operating area and responds to the system’s limits. The ministry’s description of Tesla’s product is the opposite: the driver remains responsible for the driving task. Section 1e is the statutory context for this distinction. It is not the specific file under which the Tesla recognition procedure is being handled, and the ministry’s statement does not say that it is.

Driver assistance versus autonomous driving function

What is still unclear

  • Whether the name change happens. Tesla has offered “Tesla Assisted Driving.” The ministry’s statement does not say the change has been made.
  • When recognition is decided. No date or procedural stage was published in the statement.
  • Which rules apply to the outcome. The ministry’s position is that the product is driver assistance. The statement does not set out the full approval route in detail.
  • Driver behaviour. The ministry’s wording places the attention requirement on the driver, but it does not report any data on how drivers use the system in practice.

How to read the name question

A marketing name tells a buyer what the product is called. The ministry’s objection is that “Full Self-Driving” suggests the car can handle the whole driving task, while the system as described requires the driver to stay attentive. The proposed “Assisted Driving” wording describes the function more directly. Whether that wording is adopted, and whether the approval process reaches a conclusion, are separate questions that the ministry’s statement does not answer.

If you own or are considering a vehicle with this feature, the practical rule from the ministry’s statement is the same as before the naming debate: the driver remains responsible for attention and control while the system is active.
