The reported German proposal concerns Deutsche Telekom’s network in Germany—not T-Mobile US’s wireless network. PhoneArena reported on Oct. 5, 2026, that Germany’s Federal Network Agency may classify the radio access network (RAN) as critical infrastructure, a move that could increase pressure on Deutsche Telekom to replace more Huawei equipment. The proposal’s text and legal status have not been confirmed in the available reporting, so this is a possibility, not an adopted order.

What the reported proposal could mean

The RAN is the part of a mobile network that connects devices to the operator’s network through radio equipment such as base stations. PhoneArena’s report says the Federal Network Agency is proposing to classify it as critical infrastructure. If adopted, that classification could affect how operators secure or manage network components, and could add pressure to replace equipment. But the report does not establish the proposal’s exact wording, legal effect, or whether it would require wholesale removal of Huawei radio units. PhoneArena’s Oct. 5, 2026 report is the source for this proposal-level claim.

That distinction matters: the German government has already set separate deadlines for certain Huawei and ZTE technology, but the available official material does not confirm that the reported RAN classification has become a new binding requirement.

What Germany’s existing 5G deadlines cover

A Bundestag summary published Apr. 1, 2026, describes public-law agreements between the federal government and Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefónica. It distinguishes two obligations:

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Network area What must change Deadline
5G core network Remove critical Huawei and ZTE components End of 2026
5G access and transport networks Replace critical functions of Huawei and ZTE network-management systems with technical solutions from other manufacturers End of 2029

These are not the same as an order to remove every Huawei radio unit. The access-and-transport commitment is specifically about critical network-management-system functions; it should not be broadened into a blanket RAN-hardware ban. The Bundestag summary describes the government’s existing commitments.

What Deutsche Telekom had already reported

In its 2024 annual report, Deutsche Telekom said it had phased Huawei out of its 5G core and did not use ZTE components. It also said it was developing its own software to manage and configure antennas and the transport network, replacing Huawei’s proprietary configuration software. The company said this work also supports its Open RAN strategy. Those disclosures describe the company’s status in its 2024 reporting; they do not establish a later completion date. Deutsche Telekom’s 2024 annual report provides the company’s account.

PhoneArena also reports that Nokia equipment and Open RAN are in use at some sites. The available sources do not establish how many sites are involved, how extensive those deployments are, or their latest status. Open RAN refers to an approach that uses open interfaces between network components; it is not, by itself, evidence that a particular amount of Huawei hardware has been removed.

Why this is connected to T-Mobile US

Deutsche Telekom is T-Mobile US’s German parent and majority shareholder, which is why a change to its German network can be framed as a story about T-Mobile’s parent. The reported German proposal is not a new order directed at T-Mobile US or its U.S. network.

What is confirmed—and what remains uncertain

Germany’s existing deadlines are described in the Bundestag’s published summary, and Deutsche Telekom’s 2024 report documents the company’s stated progress at that time. Separately, the Bundesnetzagentur says its security catalogue and list of critical functions were prepared in agreement with Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security and the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information. The regulator explains that the critical-functions list helps identify critical components under the BSI Act. That general framework does not confirm the specific RAN proposal reported by PhoneArena. The Bundesnetzagentur’s security-catalogue page explains this regulatory context.

The unresolved point is whether the reported RAN action is a formal proposal, consultation, draft classification, or something less advanced—and what legal consequences it would carry. Until an agency document or formal decision clarifies that, claims that Germany has ordered a broader Huawei RAN replacement go beyond what is established.
