A Georgia woman’s social-media account, later covered by a news outlet, describes an MRI technologist asking whether she was wearing Lululemon. The story drew attention to a real but narrower concern: some athletic clothing can contain metallic components that may heat during an MRI. The account is not independently verified, and it does not mean all Lululemon or workout clothes are unsafe.
What the Georgia woman reported—and what is separately documented
The Georgia woman’s encounter is a secondhand account: a secondary outlet reported what she said on social media. It should not be treated as a verified MRI incident or evidence that a particular garment caused an injury. The secondary report provides the account, not independent confirmation.

A separate FDA MedSun report documents a patient who sustained a first-degree burn during an MRI in 2015. The report, dated October 16, 2015, says the patient’s Lululemon shirt was assessed and found to contain metal thread. That is one reported event involving one assessed shirt; it does not establish a risk for every product from the brand. FDA MedSun report.
Why clothing can matter in an MRI
An MRI’s risks are not limited to metal objects being pulled toward the scanner. FDA describes a strong static magnetic field, changing magnetic fields and radiofrequency energy in the MRI environment. Radiofrequency energy and changing fields can heat tissue or conductive material and contribute to burns. MRI does not use ionizing radiation. FDA guidance on MRI benefits and risks.

RadiologyInfo warns that some garments may include metallic threads or fibers, fasteners, or metal-based antibacterial compounds that are not obvious to the wearer. These components can heat during an MRI and burn a patient. RadiologyInfo’s MRI safety guidance.
Heating risk is different from the projectile risk
Some ferromagnetic objects can move or be pulled toward the magnet. The clothing concern described here is chiefly heating and burns; the presence of a metallic component does not by itself prove that a garment is magnetic or that every garment will cause harm. These are distinct hazards and should not be conflated.

What to do before and during a scan
- Ask the MRI facility what to wear. Follow its screening and changing instructions. Some facilities require patients to change into a gown rather than scan in their own clothing.
- Answer screening questions accurately. Tell staff about implants, drug patches, tattoos and other relevant concerns. Follow instructions about which clothing and objects to remove. FDA patient guidance.
- Do not try to determine garment safety by appearance alone. If you are unsure about leggings, underwear or other clothing, ask the MRI staff instead of assuming a garment is metal-free. - Tell the technologist promptly if you feel unusual heating or burning during the scan. Heating and burns are recognized MRI hazards; staff can respond to a concern during the examination. FDA guidance.
What the FDA’s report count does—and does not—show
The FDA says it receives around 300 adverse-event reports for MRI scanners and coils each year, and that most describe heating and/or burns. The displayed FDA passage does not specify the measurement year for that figure. It is a count of reports, not an incidence rate, a count of clothing-related injuries, or evidence that a particular garment or brand is unsafe. FDA guidance.

What the evidence supports about Lululemon and workout clothes
The 2015 MedSun report is a documented case in which an assessed Lululemon shirt contained metal thread. The Georgia woman’s more recent story is a reported encounter, not an independently confirmed injury. Neither supports a blanket claim that all Lululemon apparel—or all athletic clothing—is dangerous in an MRI.
The practical rule is straightforward: ask the facility, disclose relevant information during screening, and follow its instructions about clothing. Patients do not need to identify hidden garment components on their own.
