Four large slabs carried ten guidelines in eight languages. After an explosive device damaged much of the monument on July 6, 2022, authorities demolished what remained for safety reasons. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s cited release did not identify who planted the device.
What were the Georgia Guidestones?
The monument stood on a five-acre tract about seven miles north of Elberton, a Georgia town known for granite. A man who called himself R. C. Christian approached a local granite company in 1979 to arrange the project. “Christian” was a pseudonym; the historical account does not establish the commissioner’s real identity. The Elberton Granite Finishing Company, led by president Joe H. Fendley Sr., built it. Clay Ouzts’s New Georgia Encyclopedia history recounts the commissioning and construction.

The Guidestones were made from blue granite and consisted of four large upright slabs arranged in an X pattern, a central stone and a capstone. The completed monument weighed 119 tons and contained 951 cubic feet of granite, according to the encyclopedia. Each of the four upright slabs weighed 42,137 pounds and stood more than 16 feet tall. The often-cited 19-foot measurement refers to the monument’s overall height, not to each upright slab.
The Elberton Granite Association’s booklet, From Quarry To Colossus—The Georgia Guidestones, gives the upright sections’ dimensions as 16 feet 4 inches high, 1 foot 7 inches thick and 6 feet 6 inches wide. The retrieved booklet does not state a publication date.

What did the inscriptions say?
The four main slabs carried ten “guides” in Arabic, Chinese, English, Hebrew, Hindi, Russian, Spanish and Swahili. They addressed subjects including governance, population and reproduction, the environment, and spirituality. More than 4,000 characters were sandblasted into the monument, the New Georgia Encyclopedia account says.
The capstone bore a separate short message in Babylonian cuneiform, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Sanskrit and classical Greek. Thus, descriptions of ten guidelines in eight languages refer to the main slabs, while references to twelve writing systems include the capstone’s four scripts as well.
The messages drew controversy and competing interpretations. Those reactions are part of the monument’s history, but they do not establish that claims about a hidden agenda or conspiracy were true. The historical account describes the inscriptions and public reaction; it does not verify such claims.

The stones were arranged with astronomical features in their design. The New Georgia Encyclopedia describes a hole oriented toward Polaris, a slot associated with the solstices, and an aperture in the capstone that allowed sunlight to reach the central stone at noon. These are descriptions of the monument as it stood; the structure no longer exists.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said preliminary information indicated that unknown individuals detonated an explosive device at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday, July 6. Responders found that a large portion of the monument had been destroyed. The agency reported no injuries. Its July 7 release said: “For safety reasons, the structure has been completely demolished.” The GBI’s July 7, 2022 announcement attributes the complete demolition to safety concerns after the blast.
The blast and the demolition were separate events: the explosive device damaged much of the structure, and authorities then took down the remainder. The cited GBI release described the investigation as active and ongoing at the time of publication. The cited record does not name the person who planted the device or establish a later investigative outcome.
