A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg story The Hedge Knight. Martin has said he loves the show’s recent cuts, but his comment does not establish it as his favorite Game of Thrones series—and the available evidence does not verify that it is “the King of Streaming.”
Which Game of Thrones series is Martin talking about?
The series is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on Martin’s first Dunk & Egg novella, The Hedge Knight. In his official blog post about the production, Martin described watching recent cuts and wrote, “I love it lots, but I’m not one to judge.” That is a clear expression of enthusiasm, not a ranking against Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon.

Martin’s post also describes the series as smaller in scale than those shows: much of its story takes place around a tournament field. That makes scale a useful point of comparison, but it says nothing about which show is better or more popular. Read Martin’s official Not a Blog.

The series adapts The Hedge Knight, the first of Martin’s Dunk & Egg stories. The collected book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings together three novellas: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. Martin places these tales roughly ninety years before A Game of Thrones.
#1 Best Overall
The book is an optional way to read the source material; it is not a prerequisite for watching the adaptation. Martin announced the illustrated hardcover collection and its contents in 2015. See his announcement about the Dunk & Egg collection.
Is it officially the King of Streaming?
That claim is not established by the cited primary sources. Martin’s blog posts discuss the adaptation, its scale, and his reaction to the cuts, but they do not provide a streaming ranking or viewership figure. Without a named publisher, metric, territory, and measurement period, “King of Streaming” is an unverified superlative—not a substantiated audience result.

The same distinction applies to calling it Martin’s favorite Game of Thrones series. His quoted reaction supports saying he is enthusiastic about what he has seen; it does not support calling the show his single favorite. His 2023 announcement described a six-episode first season as the plan at that time, while noting the count was not final. That dated plan should not be treated as confirmation of the current episode count. Read the original announcement.
