George Bailey says Australia’s call-up of Nic Maddinson for the South Africa Test tour was based on the team’s needs and expected conditions—not a dismissal of domestic cricket. The decision drew scrutiny because Maddinson reportedly had not played Sheffield Shield cricket since March 2025.
Why Maddinson’s selection raised questions
The West Australian published Josh Kempton’s report on 3 October 2026 at 10:37 AM under the headline “Australia selection chief George Bailey insists panel respects domestic cricket.” The accessible republication of that report says Maddinson was called up despite not having appeared in the Sheffield Shield since March 2025. That gap put the selection in tension with a familiar measure of form: recent runs in Australia’s domestic first-class competition.

The republication also describes Maddinson’s record since returning to New South Wales in 2024 as uneven. It reports a 17.80 Shield average in the 2024/25 season and no Shield appearances the following summer. Those figures and the account of his Shield appearances are reported by the republication, rather than independently verified here.
Bailey’s explanation: fit for this squad and these conditions
According to the republication, Bailey pointed to Maddinson’s versatility across the batting order, his ability against spin, the conditions expected on tour and the “moving parts” in the squad. His explanation was that selectors judged Maddinson the best fit for the immediate situation. As the republication quotes him: “For the time and place that we are in right now, the conditions we’re about to face, and the moving parts that we’ve had, he’s just deemed the best fit.”

That is Bailey’s account of the selectors’ reasoning, not an independent assessment of Maddinson’s suitability. It sets out a selection case that weighs anticipated role and conditions alongside recent domestic scores; it does not establish that domestic performance was irrelevant or that this is a complete account of how Australia selects players.
Bailey rejects the charge of disrespecting State cricket
The republication says Bailey rejected the idea that Maddinson’s selection showed disrespect for State cricket. It quotes him saying: “I don’t think you can view this one and say it’s disrespectful to State cricket because he hasn’t played last year.” Bailey also cautioned against reading the decision as evidence that players who were not selected were less talented. A single call-up, in his telling, was about choosing for this tour’s circumstances rather than ranking every State player against Maddinson.

Maddinson’s reported record in context
The republication says Maddinson played three Tests in late 2016, later rebuilt his career with Victoria and averaged 50.63 across 37 Sheffield Shield appearances there. It also reports that injuries had formed part of his career history. These details provide context for Bailey’s reported references to Maddinson’s experience and range, but they do not erase the more recent gap in Shield cricket or the weaker average reported for his return to New South Wales.

Mitchell Marsh was reportedly part of the selection conversation, but the republication says he was unavailable because he was returning to Perth ahead of the birth of his second child. It reports that Marsh had scored 200 runs at a strike rate of 152.67 in Australia’s recently completed ODI series against South Africa. Those performance figures are attributed to the republication; they are not presented here as independently checked scorecard data.

The same report says Test captain Pat Cummins had indicated the door remained open for Marsh’s return to Test cricket. On the account available, Marsh’s personal availability—not a reported rejection on cricket grounds—kept him out of the immediate discussion.

The dispute turns on which evidence matters most for a particular touring squad: recent Sheffield Shield scoring, or a selector’s view of role, conditions and current squad needs. Bailey’s reported defence makes the latter case for Maddinson while denying that the choice devalues State cricket. It does not prove a general selection rule, establish how other candidates were assessed, or settle whether Maddinson will perform well on tour.
