To use one, find the repository, enable or configure it with eselect repository, synchronize it using a supported method, and inspect the package and repository before installing anything. A listing in Gentoo’s registry is not a security endorsement: Gentoo says listed additional repositories receive only basic automated quality checks.
What a Gentoo package overlay does
An overlay is an ebuild repository that adds package recipes to the locations Portage searches. It can provide packages not available in your other repositories, or provide entries that override existing ones. Overlay packages generally follow Gentoo’s category/package directory layout. Gentoo’s Overlays Development Guide describes that structure and related maintenance considerations.

Repository locations and configuration are managed through repos.conf. The repository.eselect manual describes eselect repository as a way to manipulate third-party repository entries in /etc/portage/repos.conf.

How to add and use an overlay
The exact commands and outcome depend on the repository, your Portage configuration, and the installed eselect-repository version. Follow the selected repository’s own instructions and check the installed command’s help when syntax or options differ.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose a repository. Search Gentoo’s official overlay registry for the package or patch you need. Its instructions say registered repositories can be enabled by the repository name shown in the listing.
- Review the candidate first. Check its package contents, maintenance activity, maintainer or team, supported systems, and repository-specific instructions. The registry warns: “Overlays/additional repositories are unofficial and are only monitored automatically by basic quality checks. Please research a repository before adding it to your system.”
- Configure it with
eselect repository. Use the command’s available listing, enable, add, disable, or remove actions as appropriate. For a custom repository, the manual documents the formeselect repository add <name> <sync-type> <sync-uri>. Use the actual repository name, sync type, and URI supplied by that repository; do not treat this form as a universal ready-to-run command. - Synchronize it using a supported method. The repository’s sync method must be supported by your setup. The manual says
eselect repositorysupersedes layman for most alternate-repository listing, configuration, and synchronization needs, but identifies exceptions when Portage does not support a sync method, including Mercurial, Bazaar, and g-sorcery. - Inspect package selection before installing. Review the specific ebuild and its effects, especially if the overlay may supply a package also present elsewhere. Confirm compatibility with your architecture, profile, USE choices, and Portage configuration before emerging it.
Do not assume one command sequence applies to every Gentoo system: local repos.conf settings, repository metadata, sync method, and overlay-specific requirements can change the procedure.
How to judge whether an overlay is safe for your system
There is no blanket safety verdict for all overlays. Gentoo’s registry provides repository names and descriptions, but explicitly limits its monitoring claim to basic automated checks. Registry inclusion alone does not establish comprehensive review, security, maintenance quality, or compatibility with your system.
- Package fit: Confirm that the repository supplies the package, version, or patch you actually need.
- Maintenance: Look for recent, credible activity and an identifiable maintainer or team. Do not infer current health from the registry entry alone.
- Trust and review: Distinguish Gentoo project repositories, developer repositories, and independent repositories, but do not treat any category as a guarantee. Assess the specific repository and package.
- Compatibility: Check the repository’s stated support against your architecture, profile, USE choices, and Portage setup. Compatibility is specific to the repository and machine.
- Synchronization: Verify that your tooling can use the repository’s sync method, and follow any documented exception or special setup.
- Overrides: Because overlays can add or override package entries, check which repository Portage will use for the package and what that choice changes.
What overlay maintainers should know
Overlay ebuilds use the conventional Gentoo category/package directory structure, with ebuilds, a Manifest, and any needed files in the package’s directory. The Overlays Development Guide also cautions maintainers to take care with overlay eclasses and cache updates when eclasses change.

Is layman still the usual way to add overlays?
For most alternate-repository listing, configuration, and synchronization tasks, the upstream manual says eselect repository supersedes layman. It notes exceptions for sync methods Portage does not support, including Mercurial, Bazaar, and g-sorcery; check the chosen repository’s instructions for its actual method.
