The Gennai Pen SL01 is a compact stainless-steel ballpoint built around a two-part mechanical action: a top button pushes the refill out, while a side lever modeled on a telegraph key pulls it back in. Japanese artist and custom knifemaker Hidetoshi Nakayama created the concept and design; TACTICALGEEK developed the production version and handled engineering, manufacturing, and quality control. The result is an everyday-carry pen that treats its operating mechanism as the main design feature rather than hiding it inside a conventional clicker.
The published specifications describe a pen about 96 mm long, with a 10 mm maximum body diameter and an approximate 63 g weight. Those figures, the material description, refill details, and shipping forecast come from the 2026 campaign FAQ and sponsored coverage, not independent measurement or hands-on testing.
What makes the Gennai Pen SL01 different?
Most retractable ballpoints use one button, a twist collar, or a sliding switch. The SL01 separates those actions. Pressing the button on top extends the refill for writing. Pressing the prominent side lever retracts it. The lever is styled after a telegraph key, so operating the pen becomes a visible, deliberate movement rather than a hidden spring cycle.

That arrangement serves two purposes. Functionally, it gives the user a positive way to cover the writing tip before putting the pen away. As an object, it makes the mechanism part of the pen’s identity. The campaign FAQ also says the lever can be pressed repeatedly when you are not writing, positioning that movement as a tactile mechanical fidget. It is a design feature, not evidence of a measured durability rating or a claim that the pen is a toy.
The concept came from Nakayama, whose background includes art and custom knifemaking. TACTICALGEEK translated the concept into a production design and is identified in the campaign material as responsible for development, engineering, manufacturing, and quality control. A sponsored New Atlas feature published September 9, 2026 presents those roles and the product claims; it should not be read as an independent review.
How the two-part mechanism works
Extending the refill
To write, press the top button. The internal mechanism moves the ballpoint refill forward until the writing tip is exposed. The campaign’s operational description is: “Press the top button to extend the refill.” The button is therefore the normal deployment control, even though the side lever is the more visually distinctive part.

Retracting with the telegraph-key lever
To cover the tip, press the side lever. The FAQ describes this as: “Press the Telegraph Key–style lever to retract it.” Because the lever sits on the side of the body, retraction is a separate gesture from deployment. That can be useful when you want to close the pen without reaching for the top button, and it gives the SL01 its characteristic mechanical interaction.
Using the lever between notes
The campaign FAQ explicitly permits repeated lever presses when the user is not writing. This is best understood as a tactile interaction offered by the design. The sources do not provide cycle-life testing, a failure-rate figure, or an independent assessment of how the mechanism performs after prolonged fidgeting, so those questions remain open.
Materials, dimensions and physical format
The campaign FAQ specifies a solid SUS303 stainless-steel body. New Atlas describes precision CNC machining and notes that selected versions use a ceramic-based coating. The FAQ says natural stainless-steel and ceramic-coated editions were offered. It presents the coating as intended to improve wear and corrosion resistance while acknowledging that signs of use can still appear over time; that is a campaign claim rather than an independently verified coating test.

| Published specification | Campaign figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | Approximately 96 mm | Kickstarter campaign FAQ, updated September 2026; not independently measured |
| Maximum body diameter | Approximately 10 mm | Campaign specification |
| Maximum width at telegraph-key lever | Approximately 24 mm | Campaign specification; the lever creates the widest point |
| Maximum width at pocket clip | Approximately 17.5 mm | Campaign specification |
| Weight | Approximately 63 g | Campaign specification; likely varies slightly by finish or production tolerance |
At 96 mm, the SL01 is shorter than many full-size office pens. Its 10 mm cylindrical body is relatively compact, but the side lever increases the envelope to the published 24 mm maximum. The approximate 63 g mass is substantial for a pen of this length because the body is solid stainless steel. In a pocket, the clip and lever dimensions matter as much as the nominal barrel diameter: the lever may catch on adjacent objects, while the clip defines how far the pen stands proud of a pocket or notebook cover.
Refills: Parker-style G2 format, with an important qualification
Each standard pen package is described as including one SCHMIDT P900M ballpoint refill. The campaign FAQ also states compatibility with Parker-style G2 refills, giving owners a widely recognized replacement format rather than a proprietary cartridge.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“G2” describes a physical refill size and interface, not a guarantee that every product sold under that label will fit. The sponsored feature warns that compatibility with specific third-party G2 refills may vary by model. Before buying replacements, compare the refill’s overall length, rear-end shape, tip geometry, and any shoulder or collar against the supplied P900M. If a refill binds, leaves the tip partially exposed, or fails to lock into the mechanism, stop rather than forcing it.
The supplied P900M establishes what the pen was designed to ship with; it does not establish writing smoothness, ink longevity, line width, or performance on particular paper. No independent writing test or comparative refill test is reported for the SL01.

What comes in the standard package?
- One Gennai Pen SL01.
- One SCHMIDT P900M ballpoint refill.
- One collaboration card.
The campaign FAQ also listed personalized laser text engraving as an optional $10 add-on during the campaign. That was a dated campaign offer, not a current price or a confirmed post-campaign service. Availability of the pen, engraving, replacement parts, and finishes should therefore be checked with the current seller or maker rather than inferred from the campaign page.
Is it practical for everyday carry?
Reasons it may suit EDC users
- Tip control: the refill can be covered with the side lever, reducing the chance of carrying an exposed writing tip.
- Compact length: the published 96 mm length takes less room than a typical full-size pen.
- Serviceable refill format: Parker-style G2 compatibility gives owners a path to replacement cartridges, subject to model-by-model fit.
- Visible operation: the mechanism provides tactile feedback and a distinctive interaction for users who value mechanical objects.
- Metal construction: solid SUS303 stainless steel gives the pen a dense, machined feel, although the sources do not establish drop resistance or long-term durability.
Trade-offs to consider
- Width around the lever: the published 24 mm maximum is more than twice the body diameter, so it may occupy more pocket space than the barrel suggests.
- Weight: approximately 63 g can feel reassuringly substantial, but may be heavier than a plastic or aluminum pocket pen.
- Short format: a 96 mm body may be comfortable for quick notes but could feel cramped for users who prefer a long writing instrument.
- Unverified ergonomics: the campaign material does not report grip comfort, balance, clip retention, or extended-writing fatigue.
- Finish wear: ceramic coating is presented as more resistant to wear and corrosion, not immune to scratches or visible use.
These are format-based considerations, not a ranking against other machined pens. The available material contains no controlled comparison of comfort, writing quality, durability, or value.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Natural stainless steel versus ceramic-coated editions
The FAQ describes a natural stainless-steel version and editions with ceramic-based coating. Natural steel leaves the machining material visible and will develop marks according to use. The ceramic option is intended, according to the campaign, to improve resistance to wear and corrosion and to provide a different surface appearance. Because the same FAQ acknowledges that signs of use may still appear, buyers should choose the finish for its look and handling as much as for its stated protective purpose.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Campaign timing and what is actually known about availability
New Atlas announced a Kickstarter launch for September 9, 2026. The campaign FAQ, updated in September, listed October 7, 2026 as the planned end date and projected shipping from early January 2027 if the project funded successfully. Those dates are campaign statements and a conditional forecast.
The available information does not confirm whether the funding goal was reached, whether production started, whether January shipping occurred, or whether new orders are currently open. Treat any listing that presents the pen as immediately available as requiring verification of its seller, production status, warranty terms, and delivery estimate. A campaign forecast is not the same as a confirmed retail inventory date.

How to evaluate an SL01 listing or replacement purchase
- Confirm the edition: check whether the listing is for natural SUS303 stainless steel or a ceramic-coated version, and whether the pictured lever and clip match the stated model.
- Check fulfillment language: distinguish an in-stock item from a preorder, campaign pledge, or estimated production batch.
- Verify the contents: the standard package is specified as the pen, one SCHMIDT P900M refill, and a collaboration card.
- Ask about support: obtain the seller’s current information on mechanism repairs, replacement clips, and spare parts, since the campaign material does not publish a service schedule.
- Match replacement refills carefully: start with the P900M dimensions and confirm the exact third-party G2 model before ordering multiples.
- Inspect the mechanism on arrival: the button should extend the refill and the side lever should retract it without grinding, sticking, or leaving the tip exposed.
What the published evidence does—and does not—show
The evidence supports a clear description of the SL01’s concept, actuation, material, approximate dimensions, supplied refill, and campaign packaging. It does not establish writing performance, ink flow consistency, clip strength, waterproofness, drop resistance, corrosion testing, mechanism life, or comparative value. Those are the measurements a hands-on review would need to supply, and none is reported here.
That distinction matters for an EDC tool. The SL01 is best understood as a compact, machined writing instrument whose mechanical interaction is central to its appeal. Whether it becomes a dependable daily pen for a particular user will depend on fit, preferred writing length, tolerance for weight, and verified access to compatible refills and support.
The Bottom Line
The Gennai Pen SL01 combines a 96 mm SUS303 stainless-steel body with a top-button deployer and telegraph-key-style retract lever. Its Parker-style G2 strategy and included SCHMIDT P900M make the refill system practical in principle, while the compact dimensions and tactile mechanism target design-conscious EDC users. Because availability, fulfillment, durability, and writing performance are not independently verified, treat it as an intriguing mechanical pen concept rather than a proven long-term performer.
