Manually select a model when you have a repeatable reason to favor a particular model or thinking level, and that option is available on your account. Google documents how each mode works, but it does not publish a head-to-head benchmark showing that Auto or manual selection is universally faster, smarter, or more accurate.
The practical answer
Auto is the sensible default for most people who move between summarizing, brainstorming, drafting, planning and occasional technical questions. Gemini chooses a model and thinking level for each prompt, so you do not have to stop and decide which option fits every request.

Manual selection is worthwhile when your work is predictable. If you routinely solve difficult coding or mathematics problems, need a particular balance of speed and reasoning, or want the same model behavior throughout a project, choosing an available model yourself gives you a stable, visible setting. It also lets you choose a thinking level rather than leaving that decision to Auto.

This is a control and workflow decision, not a proven quality contest. The Gemini Apps Help pages describe model positioning, routing and limits, but do not report comparative test scores for Auto versus manual selection. Treat Google’s wording about an “efficient” route as a product description, not an independent guarantee.

What Auto model selection does
Google says Gemini Apps can use auto model selection to “decide the best model for your prompt.” When Auto is on, prompts are “automatically routed to the most efficient model and thinking level to deliver the best possible response and preserve your usage.” Those are Google’s stated aims in Gemini Apps Help; the page does not disclose a routing algorithm or promise a particular model for a particular sentence.
In practice, the choice can vary from prompt to prompt. A short rewrite, a long summary and a multi-step coding question may not be sent to the same model or receive the same amount of reasoning. You do not need to identify those boundaries in advance, which is why Auto is convenient for varied conversations.
Auto is also intended to manage usage. Google’s documentation says more advanced models and higher thinking levels use more of an account’s allowance. Routing a simple request to a lighter option can therefore help preserve access for later, more demanding work. The help page does not publish a universal quota amount, and allowances can depend on the account, plan and current product rules.
What manual selection gives you
With an eligible Google AI plan, Google says you can switch models manually in Chat Mode and Task Mode. The choices visible to you depend on the account and the current Gemini lineup. A model marked with a lock requires an eligible plan upgrade, so a model discussed in documentation may not appear as a selectable option for every reader.
Manual choice has two separate controls:
- Model: the model family you want Gemini to use, from the options your account exposes.
- Thinking level: Low, Medium or High, where available. Google says Low is the default if you do not select a level.
These controls are independent. Selecting a model does not automatically mean High thinking, and selecting High does not turn every model into the same capability. If your task has a known need—for example, more deliberate reasoning for a complex calculation—you can make that choice explicit instead of relying on Auto.

Google says the selected model and thinking level continue for the current conversation, including when you return to that conversation later. That persistence is useful for a project thread in which consistency matters. It does not mean the setting applies to every new conversation; treat each new chat as a separate context and check the control shown there.
How the documented model descriptions differ
Google’s help material positions the available model families by workload rather than publishing a universal ranking. The descriptions below summarize that positioning, not an independent performance test.

Google also says that if a Google AI plan user reaches a limit, chats continue with Flash-Lite. That fallback is a usage behavior documented for the plan experience, not a promise that every account, region or future model list will behave identically.
Auto or manual? Compare the decision factors

Choose Auto when your work changes from prompt to prompt
Mixed everyday tasks
Use Auto for a conversation that moves from an email outline to a meeting summary, then to idea generation or a quick explanation. The main benefit is removing model-management overhead. You can concentrate on the instruction and let Gemini choose within the options available to your account.
Exploration and first drafts
Auto is also a good starting point when you are not sure what level of reasoning the task needs. Begin with the prompt, inspect the response, and only switch if the result reveals a specific problem such as inadequate depth, an unacceptable delay or a need for a consistent model across follow-up work.

Preserving allowance for occasional hard prompts
If most of your requests are lightweight but you occasionally need a demanding answer, Auto’s documented goal of routing efficiently may help avoid spending the highest-usage options on every turn. Because Google does not publish a universal quota table in the cited pages, monitor the limits and behavior shown in your own account rather than assuming a fixed saving.

Complex mathematics or coding
For a project dominated by difficult mathematics or coding, a manually selected Pro option may make sense when it is available to you. Google describes Pro as its most advanced option for those workloads. That description explains why a user might choose it; it is not a measured claim that Pro will solve every problem better than Auto.
A known speed-and-reasoning preference
If you consistently prefer a balance of speed and reasoning, Flash’s documented positioning may be a reason to select it. If your work is primarily summarization or brainstorming and efficiency is more important than maximum depth, Flash-Lite’s description may fit. These are starting hypotheses. Validate them against your own tasks, because the help pages do not provide comparative scores.
Stable behavior in a long project thread
Manual selection is useful when collaborators need to know which setting a conversation uses or when you want follow-up answers produced under the same model and thinking level. Google says that setting persists when you leave and later return to the conversation. Record the chosen setting in your project notes if other people will continue the work, since the visible model list and account access can change.
Deliberate reasoning depth
Choose Medium or High thinking only when the task benefits from additional deliberation and your allowance supports it. Google documents Low, Medium and High controls and says an unselected level defaults to Low. A higher level is not automatically better for a simple rewrite; it can consume more usage without solving a problem the task actually has.

How to switch models on a computer
Google’s computer instructions require you to be signed in. The exact labels can change as Gemini Apps evolves, but the documented path is:
- Open Gemini Apps on your computer and sign in to the account whose available models you want to use.
- Start or open the conversation in Chat Mode or Task Mode.
- Locate the model name shown near the prompt box.
- Select that model name to open the model choices available to your account.
- Choose a model. If the interface offers thinking levels, select Low, Medium or High; if you leave the level unselected, Google says it defaults to Low.
- Send your prompt and keep the conversation in that state if you want subsequent turns to use the same selection.
If a choice shows a lock, Google says an eligible plan upgrade is required. Do not assume that a model appearing in a help article is included with your account.

On a computer
Google’s computer help directs you to the response’s More menu and then Show thinking steps to inspect details about the response. Use this after an Auto response when you need to see what Gemini reports about its processing, or after a manual selection when you want to verify the conversation’s setting. The label and amount of information shown may change.
On Android
The Android instructions use a different control: open the response details through See response details. Google’s Android help documents that label rather than the computer menu path. The platform-specific wording matters; do not look for the computer’s More menu if your Android app presents the response-details control instead.

Usage limits, access and fallback behavior
Model choice is constrained by what your account can actually use. Google documents manual switching for Google AI plan users in Chat Mode and Task Mode, while locked higher-tier choices require an eligible upgrade. The available list, thinking levels and limits are subject to change, so check the controls in your own signed-in account.
Google warns that more advanced models and higher thinking levels require more usage. If a Google AI plan user reaches a limit, Gemini chats continue with Flash-Lite according to the cited help page. That means a manual choice may not remain effective after an allowance is exhausted, and an Auto conversation may be routed differently as limits change. When an answer suddenly feels different, inspect the response details and the account’s displayed limits before assuming the prompt itself caused the change.
A decision procedure you can reuse
- Classify the conversation. If it contains unrelated everyday tasks, start with Auto. If it is a single repeatable workload, continue to the next step.
- Identify the reason for control. Choose manual only if you can state the reason—specific model capability, reasoning depth, speed preference or consistency.
- Check access. Confirm that the model and thinking level are selectable on your account. A locked option is not a practical choice without the required eligibility.
- Consider allowance. Higher-tier models and higher thinking levels use more of the available allowance. Reserve them for work that benefits from them.
- Set the conversation. Select the model and level, then keep related prompts in that conversation so the documented persistence works for you.
- Verify when it matters. Use Show thinking steps on a computer or See response details on Android to inspect what Gemini reports.
- Reassess after a real task. If the result is adequate, keep the simpler choice. Switch only in response to a concrete need rather than assuming a manual label guarantees better output.
Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming Auto always picks the most powerful model

Manual selection supplies control and consistency, but the cited official pages provide no Auto-versus-manual benchmark. Judge the choice against your task and inspect the actual response instead of treating the model name as a guarantee.
Forgetting the thinking-level setting
Model and thinking level are separate controls. If you need more deliberate reasoning, set Medium or High explicitly where offered; otherwise Google says the level defaults to Low.
Expecting a setting to carry into every chat
Google says the selected model and level continue for the current conversation, including when you return to it. That statement does not say the choice automatically applies to unrelated new conversations, so check the model control before sending important work.
Ignoring limits or locked models
A locked model requires an eligible plan upgrade, and advanced choices use more allowance. If a model disappears or the conversation falls back to Flash-Lite after a limit, check your account status and the current Gemini help documentation before troubleshooting the prompt.
Bottom-line recommendation
Keep Auto on for varied, ordinary use: it removes model decisions and is designed by Google to route prompts efficiently while preserving usage. Switch manually when you can name a durable reason—complex coding or mathematics, a preferred speed-and-reasoning balance, a chosen thinking level, or the need to keep one project conversation consistent—and the option is available on your account. Because model lists, controls and limits can change, verify the setting in the conversation and use Google’s current computer model guide, Android model guide and computer usage instructions when the interface differs.
