You can usually overclock a GeForce GTX 680 by raising its power target and applying a GPU-clock offset, but there is no universal “safe” offset or guaranteed final speed. NVIDIA’s 2012 reference specification lists a 1006 MHz base clock, 1058 MHz typical boost clock and 170 W typical board power. Some tested cards exceeded 1.2 GHz, while another benchmark saw dynamic clocks from 1071 to 1124 MHz. Treat those figures as examples, not promises for every card.
How GTX 680 GPU Boost affects an overclock
The GTX 680 uses first-generation, power-target-based GPU Boost. It automatically adjusts clock and voltage when power, temperature and workload conditions permit. NVIDIA described the feature as operating autonomously, without game profiles or user intervention. Consequently, an overclock is an offset applied to a moving boost range, not a fixed clock that appears in every game.
| Reference figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| 1006 MHz | NVIDIA-published base 3D clock (2012). |
| 1058 MHz | NVIDIA-published typical boost clock (2012); actual clocks vary dynamically. |
| 170 W | NVIDIA’s typical board-power specification, not a guarantee of draw at every workload or power-target setting. |
| 1071–1124 MHz | Clock range observed by Tom’s Hardware during one benchmark run, illustrating normal Boost movement. |
| Above 1.2 GHz | Achieved in an NVIDIA test example; it is not a universal setting. |
Before you change a setting
Identify the exact board
- Record the manufacturer and model, reference or custom cooler, BIOS version, power-connector arrangement and whether it is factory-overclocked.
- Used and refurbished cards may have worn fans, clogged heatsinks or degraded thermal compound. Their limits can differ substantially from a clean reference sample.
Make a stock baseline
Save a stock profile before overclocking. Record idle and load temperature, fan speed, observed core and memory clocks, power behavior and a repeatable benchmark or game sequence. This gives you an immediate recovery setting and lets you measure whether the overclock actually helps.
Prepare cooling and monitoring
- Remove dust, verify that every fan starts and check that the case has unobstructed intake and exhaust airflow.
- Monitor GPU temperature, fan speed, power and clocks while testing.
- Replace dried thermal compound or repair a failing fan before adding voltage or clock speed.
Step-by-step GTX 680 overclocking procedure
- Open a board-partner overclocking utility. Use a utility that supports your card’s power-target and clock controls. The exact labels and permitted ranges depend on the board BIOS.
- Raise the power target first. Set it within the utility’s allowed range, then apply and observe the stock clock. A higher target only removes one limit; temperature, voltage or silicon quality may become the next limit.
- Increase the core offset in small steps. Apply a modest GPU-clock offset, run the same short repeatable test and watch for visual artifacts, driver recovery, application crashes or unexpected clock throttling. At the first reproducible failure, return to the previous stable step.
- Test memory separately. Restore the last stable core value, increase the memory offset in small increments and repeat the test. Memory instability often appears as corruption, flickering or crashes even when the core appears stable.
- Validate the complete profile. Run several longer workloads, including the games or applications you actually use. A successful benchmark pass demonstrates stability only for that workload and its conditions.
- Save and label the profile. Keep the stock profile and record the final offsets, power target, driver version, ambient temperature and card BIOS so the result can be reproduced or undone.
Temperature, voltage and power limits
Temperature
AnandTech cites 98 °C as the GTX 680’s maximum GPU temperature. That is a specification ceiling, not a recommended daily target. Lower sustained temperatures generally leave more thermal headroom and reduce fan noise and long-term stress. If your card approaches the ceiling, stop increasing clocks and correct airflow, fan or heatsink problems first.

Power target and voltage
The 170 W figure is a typical board-power design value at NVIDIA’s reference settings. Actual consumption changes with workload and the selected power target. Raising the target can prevent power-limit throttling, but it can also increase heat and noise. AnandTech’s EVGA Classified testing reported higher wall power after the power target was raised and showed different behavior with overvolting.
Voltage adjustment is an advanced step, not a required part of a normal offset overclock. Do not assume that a larger voltage setting is safe simply because the utility permits it. Use the smallest change that solves a demonstrated stability problem, and stop if temperatures, power or noise become unacceptable.

How far can a GTX 680 overclock?
Results vary with ASIC quality, BIOS limits, cooler condition, ambient temperature, power supply quality and workload. A tested NVIDIA example exceeded 1.2 GHz, but that result cannot be generalized. Report your result as the applied offset and the sustained clock range observed in your workloads, rather than as one guaranteed fixed frequency.
| Result to report | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| GPU offset and sustained boost range | Boost changes clock dynamically, so one headline number can mislead. |
| Memory offset | Memory errors can limit performance independently of the core. |
| Peak GPU temperature and fan speed | Shows thermal headroom and the noise cost. |
| Board or wall power | Reveals the electrical cost of a higher target or voltage. |
| Frame rate or completion time | Measures real benefit at your resolution and workload. |
| Stability across multiple workloads | Separates a benchmark-only pass from a dependable daily profile. |
Diagnosing instability
Artifacts, flicker or corrupted textures
Reduce the memory offset first, then retest. If corruption remains at stock memory, return the core to stock and check cooling.

Driver reset or application crash
Reduce the core offset one step and repeat the same test. If the failure persists, restore the stock profile and check temperatures and power delivery.
Clock falls below expectation
Watch temperature and power telemetry. First-generation Boost can lower clocks when either limit is reached; increasing the offset cannot override a thermal or power constraint.

Excessive noise or heat
Lower the power target or clock offset, improve case airflow and clean the heatsink. A lower, stable profile is preferable to a peak setting that keeps the fan at an objectionable speed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a better cooler or new thermal paste?
Not necessarily. A healthy stock cooler can support a modest offset if temperatures remain comfortably below the 98 °C ceiling. Consider servicing or replacing the cooler when dust, a failing fan, degraded thermal compound or a restrictive case causes high temperatures at stock settings. A cooler upgrade may provide lower temperatures or noise, but it cannot guarantee a higher core limit; silicon quality and BIOS restrictions still apply.

Use the same driver, ambient conditions, benchmark sequence and game settings. Compare sustained boost range, performance at the target resolution, peak temperature, board or wall power, fan noise and stability across several workloads. Also note whether each sample is reference, factory-overclocked, used or refurbished, and document cooler and PCB design. Do not apply advice written for later GPU Boost 2.0 or 3.0 cards to this first-generation implementation.
A practical daily-profile rule
Keep the highest setting that completes your real applications without artifacts, crashes or throttling, while maintaining acceptable temperature, power and noise. If you cannot reproduce the result after a cold boot or during a long gaming session, it is not a dependable daily overclock.
