Gears Tactics is worth considering if you want forceful, turn-based squad combat and flexible character builds; its main drawback is a linear campaign that can feel repetitive. Reviewers praise the battles, but several also criticize the required side missions and limited objective variety, especially later in the story. It is a better fit for players who prioritize tactical encounters over a sprawling campaign-management layer.
What kind of game is Gears Tactics?
Microsoft describes Gears Tactics as a single-player turn-based strategy game set 12 years before the first Gears of War. You command Gabe Diaz, assemble and equip a squad, and fight the Locust threat. Xbox lists Splash Damage and The Coalition as developers and Xbox Game Studios as publisher.

Its campaign is linear and focused on battles rather than a broad strategic layer between them. PC Gamer notes the absence of a map-based campaign system, while The Guardian contrasts it with tactics games that offer more extensive strategic management. That directness can be a plus if you want to get into fights quickly; it is a drawback if you expect a sandbox campaign or substantial base and world management.
Gears Tactics pros and cons at a glance
| Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|
| Action-point combat supports tactical chains, class abilities, executions, cover, and overwatch. | Mission objectives and structures repeat, which can make the campaign drag. |
| Five classes, skill trees, equipment, and squad combinations give you room to shape character roles. | Required side missions interrupt story progression, particularly in later acts. |
| The aggressive presentation and combat spectacle carry a recognizable Gears identity into turn-based play. | There is little strategic management outside missions compared with more layered tactics games. |
| Boss fights and the Jack update add scale, new tactical options, and equipment. | Some reviewers found boss encounters long, and late-game loot sorting less engaging. |
What works well
Combat rewards momentum and coordination
Gears Tactics gives squad members action points to spend during a turn. Positioning around cover, using overwatch, activating class abilities, and coordinating attacks can turn a dangerous encounter into a sequence of decisive moves. GameSpot praises how these systems translate familiar Gears combat ideas into a strategy RPG, while PC Gamer reviewer Wes Fenlon summed up his view: “Clever combat abilities and brutal executions translate Gears of War into a deep, fast-paced strategy game.”
#1 Best Overall
Classes and builds give squads distinct roles
PC Gamer describes five classes, and GameSpot highlights skill-tree customization and progression. Building complementary roles makes squad composition matter: the appeal is not just improving individual soldiers, but finding combinations that help your team control space, deal damage, and sustain an attack. This gives the combat more texture than a sequence of interchangeable units.
The presentation keeps the Gears character
GameSpot praises the game’s chaotic energy, and The Guardian points to its spectacle and aggressive pace. Those are reviewers’ impressions, not a guarantee that every player will respond to the style, but they explain why the shift from shooter to turn-based tactics can still feel like Gears rather than a generic strategy game.
Jack and boss encounters expand the tactical palette
Microsoft’s November 10, 2020 update announcement introduced Jack as a playable character with “over 20 skills,” along with Deviant enemies and Supreme equipment. These additions provide more options and a larger-feeling challenge. The trade-off is that reviewers disagree on how satisfying the bosses are: PC Gamer criticized their repeated mechanics and large health pools, while GameSpot described the trio of fights as long endurance runs.
What may frustrate you
Mission variety is the clearest recurring criticism
GameSpot, PC Gamer, PCGamesN, and The Guardian each discuss limited mission variety or recurring mission structures. Even if you enjoy the underlying combat, repeating similar objectives can make a long campaign feel less fresh. This is the central caution in the reviews, rather than a claim that the tactical system itself is shallow.

Mandatory side missions can slow the story
PC Gamer and The Guardian describe side missions as required gates between story beats, especially later in the campaign; PCGamesN also says the story pauses for several side missions. Players who like optional challenges may not mind the extra battles. If you mainly want to follow the plot, being required to complete them can disrupt the pace.
There is limited campaign management between battles
PC Gamer says the game lacks a world map, research system, and outside-combat gameplay system. The Guardian likewise notes that it does not provide the broader strategic layer found in games such as XCOM. That keeps the focus on tactical encounters, but leaves less room to make campaign-level decisions between missions.

- An incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe filled with action and adventure.
- Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customizable weapons, gear, and vehicles.
- Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre and breaks traditional conventions of story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.
Bosses and equipment can feel like chores late in the campaign
Some reviewers found boss fights drawn out, with familiar mechanics and generous health pools. PC Gamer also says sorting through similar loot loses its appeal later on. These are review observations, not universal reactions, but they matter if long encounters and frequent equipment comparisons tend to wear you down.

GameSpot characterizes the plot as simple and mostly detached from the wider saga; PC Gamer describes parts of the narrative as thin. That does not establish that the story is bad for every player. It does suggest you should buy into the combat and Gears setting more than expect a particularly deep or essential chapter in the franchise’s larger narrative.
Best Value
Who should play Gears Tactics?
- Good fit: You enjoy turn-based combat built around positioning, action-point choices, class abilities, and coordinated squad roles.
- Good fit: You want the Gears setting and presentation in a different genre, and a direct, single-player campaign suits you.
- Less suitable: You want varied objectives throughout a long campaign or dislike being required to complete side missions.
- Less suitable: You expect substantial strategic management, an open-ended campaign structure, or a story that is central to the experience.
Platforms, controls, and access
The US Xbox store listing identifies PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It lists the game as single-player and includes features such as PC gamepad support, Smart Delivery, Xbox Play Anywhere, 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, variable refresh rate, and 60 fps+. These are store listing claims; access and supported features can depend on hardware, region, and service. Microsoft’s November 10, 2020 update article also describes enhanced controller support, keyboard remapping, and camera and UI settings. A controller is optional, not required.
The US Xbox listing displayed a $29.99 purchase price and subscription listings when checked on October 7, 2026. Store prices, subscription inclusion, and cloud access can change, so check the current listing for your region before buying.
Individual reviewer campaign times are not reliable estimates for everyone: PC Gamer’s Wes Fenlon reported taking about 25 hours to finish his campaign, while GameSpot’s Mike Epstein reported a run of more than 35 hours. Those are separate reviewers’ experiences, not a representative completion-time range.
