For a first playthrough, start with Gears of War: Reloaded, then play Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5. That release-based route preserves the series’ intended reveals while using the current remaster for the original campaign. Play Gears of War: E-Day first only if strict in-universe chronology matters more to you than discovering the story in release order.
Judgment and Gears Tactics are optional additions. Judgment is an early-war, flashback-framed shooter; Tactics is a squad-based strategy game. Both add context, but neither is required to follow the main numbered saga.

The two ways to play Gears of War
There are two valid orders, and they serve different goals. Release order follows the way the narrative, characters and major reveals were originally presented. Chronological order starts with the 2026 origin story and moves forward through the Locust War and its aftermath.

The first five games form the cleanest modern continuation. Judgment and Tactics work best after the numbered games because their value is additional context rather than a prerequisite for understanding the central plot.

Release order, including the modern remaster
The franchise’s original release sequence began in 2006. The table shows the historical releases and explains how Reloaded fits into a current playthrough.

Reloaded is not a separate sequel in the timeline. It is the current remastered way to play the original campaign, replacing the 2006 release for most new players. The 2015 Ultimate Edition remains useful as a historical reference, but buying it is unnecessary when Reloaded is available on your platform.
Chronological story order
In-universe chronology begins with E-Day and then moves through early-war stories before reaching the original game. The dates below describe the relative placement supplied by the current chronology guide, not a calendar year on Earth.

Chronology is coherent, but it changes the rhythm of a first playthrough. You meet the setting’s origin before the series explains it through later revelations, and Tactics temporarily replaces third-person shooting with squad management and turn-based decisions.
What each game is doing in the larger story
Gears of War: E-Day
E-Day is an origin story about the moment the Locust Horde emerges and turns a post-Pendulum-Wars world into an emergency. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in Kalona. The official description places it fourteen years before the original game, making it the chronological starting point but not necessarily the best narrative introduction.
Play it first if you want to see the beginning immediately, already know the broad franchise premise, or prefer chronological storytelling. Play it later if you want the original game’s unanswered questions and later explanations to arrive in the order the series designed them.

Gears of War: Judgment
Judgment focuses on Damon Baird and Augustus Cole during the early Locust War. Its framing device looks back on events rather than presenting a simple uninterrupted march through time. That structure makes more sense once you know the characters from the original trilogy, which is why it is a strong optional follow-up rather than a required opening chapter.

Tactics uses a squad-based strategy format instead of the main series’ third-person shooting. You manage a team, position units, choose abilities and make turn-by-turn decisions. Its campaign sits roughly one year after E-Day, so it is valuable to players who want early-war world-building but may feel like a genre detour after several action games.
Gears of War: Reloaded
Reloaded is the remaster of the original Gears of War. It includes the Ultimate Edition’s bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps, modes, characters and cosmetics at no additional cost. The campaign supports two-player co-op, and the modern release adds cross-play and cross-progression.

Gears of War 2
Gears 2 follows the Lightmass Offensive and expands the scale of the conflict beyond the first game’s introduction. It is the natural next step after Reloaded because it assumes you know the original squad and carries their relationships and consequences forward.
Gears of War 3
Gears 3 completes the original trilogy’s central war arc. Its setting follows Jacinto’s sinking by three years, so it is best played directly after Gears 2 rather than separated by a spin-off.

Gears of War 4
Gears 4 begins a later-generation storyline after a 25-year jump from the original trilogy’s war. The time gap introduces a changed political and social landscape and a new group of protagonists while retaining the series’ cover-based combat identity.
Gears 5
Gears 5 continues that newer storyline only months after Gears 4. Do not place it before Gears 4: its character relationships and consequences depend on the preceding campaign.
Is Reloaded the same as the original game?
Reloaded tells the original game’s campaign, but it is not merely an untouched 2006 copy. It is a remaster and packages the Ultimate Edition’s additional campaign act and expanded multiplayer content. That makes it the practical first purchase for someone starting now.
- Campaign: the original story, with the Ultimate Edition bonus act included.
- Multiplayer: additional maps, modes, characters and cosmetics from the Ultimate Edition are included.
- Co-op: two-player campaign co-op is supported.

If you already own an older edition, Reloaded’s value is the modern platform availability and consolidated content rather than a new chapter in the story.
Where E-Day fits in a first playthrough
E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam. Cloud access is available through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW, subject to the service and region you use.
The game is the chronological beginning, but release order remains the safer default for newcomers. Starting with E-Day can reveal details that the original trilogy expected players to learn later. Conversely, ending a release-based run with E-Day lets you approach its origin material with a full understanding of the people and conflict it depicts.

Co-op and cross-platform expectations
Reloaded’s campaign co-op and cross-play are useful when two players own different compatible platforms, but account requirements and feature support can vary by platform. Confirm the current platform terms before arranging a shared campaign.
Common ordering mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating chronology as automatically better
Chronology answers “what happened first,” not “what should a first-time audience learn first.” If you care about the franchise’s original reveals, use Reloaded through Gears 5 before the prequels.
Mistake: assuming every entry is the same genre
Judgment remains a third-person shooter, while Tactics is squad-based strategy. Schedule Tactics when you want a deliberate tactical campaign, not when you expect another cover-shooter sequel.

Mistake: placing Gears 5 before Gears 4
Gears 5 is only months after Gears 4 and depends on its setup. Keep those two campaigns together.
Mistake: assuming subscription access is permanent
Game Pass catalogs, cloud rights, retailer stock and promotional prices are changeable. Treat the stated $39.99 Reloaded figure as its August 2025 launch SRP, not a guaranteed current price.
An efficient route for different kinds of players
You want the main story with no detours
Play Reloaded, Gears 2, Gears 3, Gears 4 and Gears 5. This covers the principal saga while keeping the campaign format consistent.
You want every story period in chronological order
Play E-Day, Judgment, Tactics, Reloaded, Gears 2, Gears 3, Gears 4 and Gears 5. Expect the shift from action shooting to strategy when you reach Tactics.
You want the original trilogy first, then extra context
Play Reloaded, Gears 2 and Gears 3, then Judgment and Tactics, followed by Gears 4 and Gears 5. This gives the early-war side stories a familiar character foundation while preserving the newer-generation arc as a separate phase.
Optional physical companion material
The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day, published by Insight Editions, is an official companion book. Its coverage includes developer interviews about the game’s art, story, sound and design. It is supplementary reading, not a replacement for any campaign, and availability should be checked with the retailer in your region.
