Some Gears of War: E-Day players are complaining that the game is “woke.” That argument is documented. What isn’t documented is that those complaints are driving a broad wave of negative reviews. The evidence so far is a news report and a handful of forum posts, not a representative sample of reviews.
What is documented
PlayCentral reported on October 5, 2026 that Steam discussion users were objecting to Pride flags and to Mags, a new female character. Those users framed the objections as the game being “woke.” The same report noted that other players were criticizing the campaign and technical issues. That means “woke” doesn’t describe every negative reaction.

The discussion happened during Early Access. Xbox Wire said on October 1 that “Today, Gears of War: E-Day Early Access begins for Premium Edition players and Game Pass subscribers with the Premium Upgrade.” The public launch was scheduled for October 6, 2026. The early audience is therefore limited to players who bought a higher-priced edition or added the upgrade. Early reviews from that group can change once the wider audience arrives.
What is not established
- No verified review percentage. One participant in an October 3 Steam Community thread asked, “80% positive review is bad to you?” That is a user’s comment, not a measured aggregate, and it shouldn’t be cited as the game’s rating. It does suggest that the reviews weren’t uniformly negative, and that forum users were arguing over how to read them.
- No proven cause. A report and selected posts show the argument exists. They can’t show how many negative reviews mention representation or Pride customization, or whether those reviews moved the overall score.
- No developer response found. No named developer or official spokesperson comment on the “woke” criticism turned up in the material reviewed.
Thread titles in the Steam discussion included phrases like “bad steam reviews” and “Woke Status?” These show what participants were asking. They aren’t evidence of how widely the topic is searched or discussed.

Separate the kinds of criticism
| Type of reaction | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| Objections to Pride flags and the character Mags | Reported by PlayCentral (October 5) from Steam discussions; scale unknown |
| Campaign and technical complaints | Mentioned in the same report as separate criticism; details and scale not stated |
| Player reviews on Steam | Steam surfaced customer reviews during Early Access; no verified aggregate available |
| Critic reviews | Still developing as of early October |
Critic coverage was incomplete
PC Gamer’s October 1 piece was a review in progress. It said: “We’ll publish the final, scored version of this review once I’ve had time to try out the multiplayer, which wasn’t available pre-release.” Any claim about how critics received the game, from the early window alone, would rest on partial evidence.

How to read the score yourself
- Sort Steam reviews by recent and read a sample, rather than relying on forum claims about percentages.
- Check whether negative reviews cite performance, stability or campaign pacing, which can be fixed by patches, or only representation.
- Look for final scored critic reviews, which should include multiplayer.
- Expect the picture to shift after launch. The evidence here dates from October 1 to 5, and review sentiment can move quickly.
