Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel, not a remake of the 2006 game. It is set fourteen years before the original, follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago when the Locust Horde first emerges, and uses that crisis to revisit the series’ foundations. The Coalition says it rebuilt the game from scratch while retaining Gears’ cover-based identity, then changed movement, traversal, cover interaction, ballistics and weapon behavior. The campaign supports solo play, split-screen co-op and online teams of up to four; the multiplayer package includes Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus.
The game launched worldwide on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, with cloud play through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. The comparison below separates confirmed features from expectations: the official material explains design goals and modes, but it does not provide independent frame-rate testing or a controlled hands-on comparison with the 2006 release.

The table shows the key distinction: E-Day is designed to add historical context and a refreshed ruleset, not to replace the original game in the timeline.
Is Gears of War: E-Day a prequel?
Yes. The official game page places E-Day fourteen years before the original Gears of War and describes it as the moment the Locust Horde first erupts from below. Its protagonists are Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, long before the events that made them the series’ familiar soldiers. The official wording calls it a “gripping origin-story,” framing the game around the event that begins the wider conflict rather than a later chapter in the war. Read the announcement on the official Gears of War E-Day page.

What the fourteen-year gap changes
Because the story occurs before the original campaign, E-Day can show a world reacting to the first Locust attack instead of assuming that the war, its fronts and its military routines already exist. Marcus and Dom are not being revisited as veterans of the original game’s battles; they are the characters through whom players see the disaster begin. That gives the prequel a clear narrative job: establish the catastrophe, the relationship between its two leads and the circumstances that define the later series.
What E-Day does not change
A prequel does not erase the 2006 game or retcon its place as the starting point for players. The original remains the later reference point in the chronology, while E-Day supplies earlier context. You can therefore approach E-Day as an entry point for newcomers or as additional background for players who already know Marcus and Dom, without treating it as a replacement edition of the first game.
How is E-Day different from the original’s combat?
The Coalition’s stated aim is refinement rather than abandonment. Its gameplay update says, “Gears of War defined the third-person cover shooter and we’ve refined the formula, focusing on the core Gears pillars: movement, cover, weapons and enemies.” The same article says E-Day was built from scratch, including animations, assets, features and a unified gameplay sandbox. Those are developer descriptions of design and intent, not independent measurements of how the finished game feels.
Cover remains the foundation
Players should still recognize the fundamental Gears loop: move between protection, expose yourself to fire, create an opening and finish the encounter at close range. E-Day’s changes are intended to make that loop less static. The Coalition specifically discusses cover gaps, which create additional routes through or around defensive positions, and a more deliberate cover-cancel system. In practical terms, the announced design points toward cover that is part of a connected movement space rather than a set of isolated stopping points.
Movement and traversal add freedom and verticality
The Coalition says E-Day changes movement and traversal to add freedom and verticality while preserving the series’ cover identity. “Verticality” is an official design description, not a promise of a particular jump system or a measured increase in map height. It indicates that encounters are being authored with more than one elevation or approach in mind. Combined with cover gaps and momentum, the intended result is a combat rhythm in which repositioning matters as much as selecting the next piece of cover.
Momentum and cover-cancel timing
The gameplay update calls out movement momentum and a more deliberate cover-cancel system. Momentum means the timing of an input should matter more than an instantaneous stop-and-start transition; cover-cancel changes how a player leaves protection or redirects a move. The announcement does not publish frame data, input latency, or a direct comparison against the 2006 game, so it is more accurate to describe these as announced handling changes than to claim that E-Day is objectively faster or slower.

Simulated projectile ballistics
E-Day’s projectiles are described as using simulated ballistics and travel time. This is a substantial design change from treating every shot as an immediately resolved hit. A projectile with travel time can make distance, target movement and the moment of the shot relevant to aiming. The official update does not provide weapon-by-weapon velocity figures, damage tables or a benchmark, so players should not infer exact ranges or time-to-kill values from the announcement alone.
Shoulder swapping while aiming
The Coalition also lists shoulder swapping while aiming. This gives a player a way to change the camera’s side during an aimed view, which can help expose less of the character around a particular edge or align a shot with the available cover. The feature fits E-Day’s stated emphasis on cover gaps and more flexible traversal, but the announcement does not establish how every weapon or situation uses it.
Weapon changes: what is confirmed
The published update names two particularly concrete weapon decisions and describes additional weapon adjustments. These details are more specific than the broader movement language, but they still come from the developer rather than an independent balance test.
| Weapon or system | Confirmed E-Day detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Gnasher | Six shells, down from eight in previous Gears titles. | Reload and ammunition management are intended to matter more during close-range fights; the announcement does not state damage or reload-speed changes. |
| Hammerburst | Inspired by the original Gears of War version, with an accurate six-round burst and a perfect active-reload effect that increases rate of fire. | The Coalition is deliberately referencing the first game’s version while defining how its burst and active reload work in E-Day. |
| Other weapons | The update says weapons have been adjusted, without publishing a complete balance table. | Do not assume that every weapon behaves exactly as it did in 2006 or that the named changes describe the entire arsenal. |
| Projectiles | Simulated ballistics and travel time are part of the announced combat model. | Shot timing and distance may influence engagements; no universal projectile statistics are provided. |
The Hammerburst description is unusually explicit: “Our Hammerburst is inspired by the original Gears of War version, with an accurate 6 round burst and a perfect active reload effect that increases your rate-of-fire.” That wording establishes the reference point and the six-round burst, but it is not evidence that the weapon is numerically identical to the 2006 version.
Will E-Day feel like classic Gears or a different shooter?
Based on the announced systems, E-Day is best understood as a classic Gears framework with a more connected combat space. The cover system, close-quarters weapon identity and active-reload tradition remain recognizable. Cover gaps, momentum, shoulder swapping, vertical routes and projectile travel time are intended to add more decisions around when to move, which side of cover to use and how to lead a target.

No controlled, independent side-by-side test in the available material measures whether E-Day is more responsive, more difficult or more fluid than the 2006 release. Those judgments will depend on the final encounter layouts, tuning and player preference. What can be stated now is the design direction the developer has published.

Story tone, the Locust emergence and the horror angle
E-Day’s premise naturally changes the emotional context from the original. The game depicts the first emergence of the Locust Horde, so the threat is presented as an intrusion into a world encountering it for the first time. The official page’s language about the Horde erupting from below and a desperate fight for survival supports an origin-and-disaster tone.
How that differs from a later-war perspective
A story set fourteen years earlier can focus on uncertainty, shock and the process of discovering what the enemy is. The original game serves as the established series starting point; E-Day is positioned before that familiarity. It is reasonable to expect the campaign to use the first attack to create tension, but the official descriptions do not provide a scene-by-scene horror breakdown, enemy roster or independent assessment of atmosphere. Those specifics should not be presented as confirmed until the game itself or additional official material establishes them.
Campaign and co-op: how many people can play?
The official E-Day page lists three campaign configurations:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Solo: play the campaign alone.
- Split-screen co-op: play cooperatively on the same supported screen.
- Online co-op: play with up to four players online.
This is a meaningful expansion of the ways a campaign group can be formed, especially for players who want a traditional couch experience as well as online play. The announcement establishes the player counts and formats, but it does not specify whether every difficulty, progression element or accessibility option is identical across solo, split-screen and online sessions. Consult the in-game settings and current support documentation for those implementation details.
Choosing a campaign format
Solo play suits readers who want to control the pacing of an origin story and absorb its character moments without coordinating a group. Split-screen is the direct local option for two people sharing a display. Online co-op is the route for larger groups, with the official description allowing up to four players. Because E-Day’s traversal and cover systems are being redesigned together, co-op teams may need to coordinate movement and sightlines more actively than a purely linear cover layout would require; that is an expectation from the announced design, not a tested conclusion.
Multiplayer: Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus
E-Day’s multiplayer offering is broader than the campaign alone. The official feature description promotes Horde Siege, an evolved player-versus-environment wave-survival mode, and refined 4v4 Versus player-versus-player matches. The Coalition’s dedicated Gears of War: E-Day Multiplayer Deep Dive is the appropriate source for any rules, maps, progression or playlist details that are published there.

Horde Siege
Horde Siege is described as PvE wave survival. That establishes its core structure: players cooperate against successive enemy attacks and attempt to survive the sequence. “Evolved” signals that it builds on the series’ Horde concept, but the available description does not establish exact wave counts, class roles, fortification rules, boss behavior or reward systems. Those details should be checked against the current multiplayer documentation rather than inferred from the name.
4v4 Versus
Versus is announced as a refined 4v4 competitive mode. The confirmed fact is the team format and the developer’s intention to refine the experience. The source material does not provide a complete list of modes, maps, ranked rules, input pools or cross-play policy, so those should not be treated as settled by the launch announcement alone.
Why the multiplayer changes matter to the comparison
The original Gears established the series’ multiplayer identity alongside its campaign. E-Day’s announced package keeps that split between cooperative survival and competitive matches while applying the same movement, cover and weapon revisions to a shared gameplay sandbox. Whether those changes produce a better competitive balance or a different skill ceiling requires live play and independent evaluation; the official descriptions establish scope, not outcomes.

Who should play E-Day first?
Choose E-Day first if you want the earliest story chapter
Newcomers who prefer chronological fiction have a straightforward reason to begin with E-Day: it depicts the Locust emergence and introduces Marcus and Dom at the start of their defining conflict. The game is designed as an origin story, so its premise does not require treating the 2006 campaign as prior history.

Choose the original first if you want the series’ historical starting point
Players interested in the game that established Gears’ third-person cover-shooter formula may still want to experience the original before E-Day. That order lets you see the later prequel as a deliberate return to the characters and ideas that the first release introduced. It also makes the contrast between the original’s foundational rules and E-Day’s announced revisions easier to appreciate.
Play both if combat evolution is your main interest
The clearest comparison comes from treating the two games as different points in the same lineage: the 2006 title defines the original cover-shooter template, while E-Day retains that identity and adds the systems The Coalition lists—cover gaps, deliberate cover-canceling, momentum, shoulder swapping, simulated ballistics, vertical traversal and weapon-specific changes.
What is confirmed, and what remains unknown?
Confirmed information comes from official game pages and launch announcements: the fourteen-year setting, Marcus and Dom’s roles, the rebuilt-from-scratch production claim, the named combat changes, campaign player counts, Horde Siege, 4v4 Versus, platforms and launch timing. The sources do not establish independent review consensus, comparative frame rates, hardware-by-hardware performance, exact weapon balance, complete multiplayer rules or a measured verdict on whether E-Day feels better than the original.

They do not prove that every player will prefer the new handling, that the game runs at a particular frame rate, or that a weapon is balanced in a particular way. Those conclusions require current testing and play experience beyond the official descriptions used here.
Bottom line: prequel in story, revision in play
Gears of War: E-Day adds the missing opening chapter to the series’ chronology: fourteen years before the original, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago confront the Locust Horde’s first emergence. Its design goal is equally clear. The Coalition is preserving cover-based Gears combat while rebuilding the underlying sandbox and changing how players move, use cover, aim, and manage weapons. Six-shell Gnasher capacity, the six-round Hammerburst burst, simulated projectile travel, shoulder swapping, cover gaps and momentum are concrete examples of that direction.
Campaign co-op for up to four, split-screen support, Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus give E-Day a broad feature set at launch. The original remains essential as the game that defined the formula; E-Day is the earlier story and the modern reinterpretation of that formula. Treat the official feature list as a statement of intent and scope, not as a substitute for independent performance testing or a hands-on judgment about which game feels better.
