Gears of War: E-Day vs. Halo—How Their Campaigns and Gameplay Differ

Gears of War: E-Day is built as a focused, close-quarters origin story, while “Halo” can mean two very different campaign structures. Halo Infinite uses an open-world Zeta Halo with optional activities, whereas Halo: Campaign Evolved is a mission-based remake and expansion of the original Combat Evolved campaign. E-Day therefore sits closer to a tightly directed cover-and-weapons campaign; Infinite emphasizes exploration and a broader sandbox; Campaign Evolved preserves classic mission progression while adding modern systems and content.

The comparison below uses the publishers’ stated designs. It does not claim a particular campaign length, difficulty, map size, or quality where those details have not been published.

First, which Halo campaign do you mean?

Halo is a franchise rather than one campaign formula. Comparing E-Day with “Halo” without naming a game can produce a misleading answer.

Halo Infinite: the open-world comparison

Halo Infinite places its campaign on Zeta Halo and lets you move between a main story route and optional activities. Exploration can uncover Spartan equipment and audio logs, destroy Banished strongholds, liberate soldiers, and hunt enemy captains. Its defining structural choice is player-directed traversal: you decide when to leave the critical path and which activities to tackle.

Halo: Campaign Evolved: the classic mission comparison

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a ground-up remake and expansion of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign. It retains a mission-based adventure while adding three new missions, enhanced visuals and cinematics, a broader selection of weapons and vehicles, new enemies, and gameplay-modifying Skulls. For a reader thinking of Halo’s original, level-by-level structure, Campaign Evolved is the more relevant comparison with E-Day.

How the stories differ

E-Day is an origin story about the first days of a war

E-Day takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War. You follow a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they try to survive the initial Locust invasion. That setting gives the campaign a deliberately immediate perspective: the characters and the world are confronting the threat as it begins, rather than investigating a conflict after its mythology is already established.

The official description also emphasizes familiar enemies made more threatening, new creatures, horror elements and weapons intended for brutal close-quarters fighting. Those details point to a campaign whose tension comes from surviving dangerous encounters in constrained spaces, not from steadily clearing a giant map of icons.

Infinite is a later Master Chief adventure on Zeta Halo

Halo Infinite’s campaign is organized around Master Chief’s adventure on Zeta Halo. Its story route remains available if you prefer a direct progression, but the ringworld is designed to pull you away from that route. You can investigate locations, rescue soldiers, attack Banished strongholds, collect audio logs, find Spartan equipment and pursue enemy captains.

The important difference is not simply that Infinite has a larger setting. Its optional objectives are part of the campaign’s intended rhythm. Progress can alternate between a story mission and self-selected activity, giving the player more control over pace and order than a strictly linear campaign normally allows.

Campaign Evolved retells Halo’s foundational campaign

Campaign Evolved returns to the Combat Evolved premise: Master Chief’s encounter with the Covenant and the Halo ring. It is not an open-world reinterpretation. Its foundation remains a sequence of missions, but the remake expands that foundation with three additional missions, new enemies, more weapons and vehicles, improved visuals and cinematics, and Skulls that alter gameplay rules.

  • A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
  • MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
  • CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.

That makes Campaign Evolved a useful middle case. It offers the recognizable rhythm of a mission-based Halo campaign while providing more content and more ways to customize a playthrough than the original release did.

Campaign structure: directed encounters versus exploration

What E-Day’s focused structure implies

E-Day’s stated design centers on an origin-story campaign and authored combat encounters. The emphasis is on what happens inside each encounter: how enemies are combined, how the space is laid out, which weapon you bring, and how effectively you use it. The official material does not provide a campaign-length figure or map-size figure, so “focused” should be read as a description of structure, not as a promise that the game is short.

This structure suits players who want the game to establish the next fight for them. You are more likely to spend attention on positioning, cover, target priority and ammunition decisions than on deciding which icon to pursue across a world map.

What Infinite’s open world changes

Infinite makes navigation and activity selection part of the campaign. The main story is still available as a more linear route, but optional objectives let you choose your own sequence of detours. A stronghold assault, a rescue, an equipment pickup and an audio-log hunt serve different purposes, so the campaign can feel different depending on what you choose to do between story missions.

That freedom has a practical trade-off. Players who enjoy exploration and self-directed objectives get more control over pacing. Players who prefer a tightly authored sequence may need to ignore optional markers and stay on the main route to preserve a more direct experience.

What Campaign Evolved changes without becoming open world

Campaign Evolved expands the classic mission framework rather than replacing it. Three new missions add to the route, while the broader arsenal, additional vehicles, new enemies and Skulls create more variation within that route. The result is a campaign with clear mission boundaries and a modernized feature set, not a Zeta Halo-style activity map.

Combat and gameplay: what you actually do in each game

E-Day: close-range tactics and encounter puzzles

E-Day’s combat description emphasizes cover, weapons and close-quarters engagements. Its official gameplay update says encounters are shaped by four interacting factors:

  • Enemy combinations, which determine the threats you must prioritize.
  • Encounter layout, which affects lines of sight, cover and movement.
  • Weapon selection, which changes how you answer the threats in front of you.
  • Player skill, which determines how efficiently you exploit the space and equipment.

That is a useful way to understand the game’s intended loop. The challenge is not only aiming at individual enemies; it is reading the combination of enemies and terrain, then choosing a weapon and position that address both. The official update also describes weapon modifications in Campaign and Horde Siege. Weapon customization is therefore presented as part of the combat sandbox rather than a feature limited to a separate mode.

Developers have described E-Day as using a new sandbox and noted that not every legacy feature could be included at launch. That means you should not assume that every mechanic from earlier Gears games is present simply because the franchise returns. Specific launch features should be checked against the current build and platform listing.

Infinite: a broader weapons-and-vehicles sandbox

Infinite’s campaign is built around the wider Halo sandbox: weapons, vehicles, traversal across a large ringworld and encounters distributed through an open environment. The defining choice is flexibility. You can approach an objective with different equipment, travel by vehicle, move on foot, or postpone it while pursuing another activity.

Compared with E-Day’s stated close-quarters emphasis, Infinite gives more weight to distance, mobility and environmental approach. The open-world setting lets you decide not only how to fight an encounter but also when and from which direction to begin it. That does not make every fight identical; it changes where the decision-making happens, from a tightly authored room or corridor to a larger route through the ring.

Campaign Evolved: classic Halo combat with added variables

Campaign Evolved keeps the mission-based Halo foundation but broadens the tools available inside it. The publisher specifically lists an expanded selection of weapons and vehicles, new enemies and Skulls that modify gameplay. Those additions give returning players more ways to approach familiar mission types and give new players optional rule changes for subsequent runs.

Because the campaign remains mission-based, its flexibility is bounded by the level being played. You get the sandbox variety associated with Halo, but not Infinite’s persistent open-world activity layer.

Is E-Day more like a cover shooter?

Based on its official description, yes: E-Day is the more cover-oriented and close-range of these three campaigns. Cover, weapon choice and encounter layout are central to how its fights are described, and the developers highlight weapons designed for brutal close-quarters combat.

That does not establish that E-Day uses every system from earlier Gears games, nor does it prove that every encounter is fought at short range. It means the published design emphasis is tactical positioning in directed encounters. Infinite and Campaign Evolved retain Halo’s broader weapon-and-vehicle identity, with Infinite adding open-world approach options and Campaign Evolved adding content and modifiers to the classic mission structure.

Co-op: player counts, split-screen and cross-play

Game Solo Online campaign co-op Local split-screen Cross-play detail
Gears of War: E-Day Yes Up to four players Two players The stated material confirms online co-op but does not specify cross-play
Halo Infinite Not separately stated in the summary Up to four players total, meaning the host plus up to three other fireteam members Not stated in the summary Not stated in the summary
Halo: Campaign Evolved Not separately stated in the summary Up to four players Two players on console Online cross-play is supported

The numbers matter because “four-player co-op” can describe different arrangements. E-Day combines two-player couch co-op with a larger online campaign. Campaign Evolved combines two-player console split-screen with four-player online cross-play. Infinite’s stated limit is a four-person network fireteam.

Before starting an online campaign, verify the platform’s current online-service requirement, the edition you own and regional account rules. Subscription and online-feature terms can change by platform and region, so the game listing and console store are the authority for your location.

Which campaign should you choose?

Choose E-Day if you want a directed, close-quarters campaign

  • You prefer a focused origin story over a large activity map.
  • You enjoy cover, weapon selection and tactical enemy combinations.
  • You want a Gears campaign set at the beginning of the Locust invasion.
  • You need two-player split-screen or up to four-player online campaign co-op.
  • You are interested in weapon modifications in Campaign and Horde Siege.

Choose Halo Infinite if exploration is the priority

  • You want a Zeta Halo campaign with freedom to leave the main story route.
  • You enjoy choosing among strongholds, rescues, equipment finds, audio logs and enemy-captain hunts.
  • You prefer a broad weapon-and-vehicle sandbox where route and timing are part of the play.
  • You want network campaign co-op for a fireteam of up to four.

Choose Campaign Evolved for classic Halo structure with more content

  • You want the Combat Evolved story and mission progression in a modern remake.
  • You value three additional missions rather than an open-world map.
  • You want more weapons and vehicles, new enemies and Skulls that modify gameplay.
  • You need up to four-player online cross-play or two-player console split-screen.
  • You are choosing among its verified Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Steam versions.

What the available information does not establish

No comparable campaign-length number or map-size measurement is established for these games in the official material summarized here. Terms such as “large,” “epic” or “focused” describe design intent, not a measured number of hours or square kilometres.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, the feature descriptions do not establish which campaign is easier, harder, longer, better, or more technically impressive. They identify different structures and tools. A quality verdict would require evidence beyond the stated product descriptions, and the sensible purchase decision depends on whether you prefer directed encounters, open-world exploration or classic mission progression.

Bottom line

E-Day and Halo are not interchangeable campaign experiences. E-Day is the clearest choice for a concentrated, close-range origin story built around cover, weapon decisions and encounter tactics. Halo Infinite is the exploration-led option, with Zeta Halo activities surrounding the main story. Halo: Campaign Evolved is the choice for a traditional Halo mission sequence expanded with new missions, weapons, vehicles, enemies and Skulls. Identify the Halo game first, then match its structure and co-op format to the way you want to play.
