Can you play E-Day solo?
Yes. Xbox explicitly says E-Day’s campaign can be played solo, in two-player split-screen co-op on console, or with up to four players online. The Xbox Wire campaign preview also describes those play options. Online co-op requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer; that requirement applies to online co-op, not the solo option.

E-Day: Marcus and Dom at the beginning
E-Day is a prequel set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. Its premise centers on young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as the Locust attack begins. It is the more natural choice if you want to see the series’ central conflict at its origin and spend the campaign with those characters.

Gears 5: Kait’s connection to the enemy
Gears 5 puts Kait Diaz at the center of the story as she investigates her connection to the enemy. Pick it if you are more interested in Kait’s arc than in revisiting Marcus and Dom’s early years. The two campaigns offer different character and story priorities, rather than two versions of the same narrative.

Scullion characterizes E-Day as mostly returning to classic Gears combat. He also notes that Gears 5’s larger Skiff areas divided players: some welcomed the change of pace, while others found them light on content and distracting from the series’ linear combat. If a particular option is important to you, check the listing and current in-game settings for details. - Start with the story. Pick E-Day for young Marcus and Dom during the Locust invasion; pick Gears 5 for Kait’s investigation and personal connection to the enemy.
