Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set during the first Locust invasion, while Gears 5 follows Kait Diaz later in the war. E-Day returns to Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago and promises rebuilt cover and movement systems, plus Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus. Gears 5 centers on Kait’s investigation and offers Horde, Escape, and Versus. The clearest differences are the timeline, protagonists, and announced mode mix—not proof that one game plays better.
How do E-Day and Gears 5 differ in story and setting?
E-Day: the Locust invasion begins
Xbox’s E-Day page places the game fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It follows younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust emerge and attack Sera. Xbox Wire’s campaign preview identifies Kalona as a new destination for the game: Xbox Wire’s E-Day campaign preview.

The premise shifts the focus from an established conflict to its sudden beginning. Xbox describes E-Day as darker and grittier, with reimagined enemies intended to bring back fear and dread. Those are the developers’ stated tone and design aims, rather than a measured comparison with Gears 5.
Gears 5: Kait investigates her connection to the enemy
Gears 5’s Xbox listing centers its campaign on Kait Diaz, who sets out to understand her connection to the enemy and discovers a danger to Sera. It is a later chapter with Kait at its center, rather than an account of Marcus and Dom at the start of the invasion.

What changes in E-Day’s gameplay?
The Coalition says E-Day was built from scratch while retaining recognizable Gears pillars. In its July 31, 2026 gameplay overview, the developer describes rebuilt cover systems, more types and heights of cover, and additional actions around cover. Xbox also describes modernized movement and traversal, with more freedom and verticality, as well as returning and new weapons.
These are developer descriptions of the intended design, not independent measurements of how E-Day handles or whether it feels better than Gears 5. The available official descriptions do not establish comparative campaign length, performance, or player preference.

The announced lineups provide a practical way to compare the games, especially if you are choosing one for a group. The figures below are those stated on the linked official pages and announcements.

So, E-Day’s announced extra PvE mode is Horde Siege, while Gears 5 lists both Horde and Escape. E-Day’s campaign listing allows up to four online players; Gears 5’s lists three-player co-op. These descriptions make the group-size difference concrete, but do not establish which game your group will prefer.

Does E-Day replace the Gears formula?
Not according to the developer’s stated direction. The Coalition describes E-Day as a new game built from scratch to feel like Gears while playing in a new way. Its stated changes focus on cover, movement, and traversal, while the continued presence of familiar characters, weapons, and cover combat keeps the comparison rooted in the series’ recognizable identity. Gears 5’s official listing emphasizes its campaign and established Versus, Horde, and Escape lineup instead of making the same specific cover-system claims.
