How the campaigns differ
Gears of War: E-Day
E-Day tells an origin story set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the Locust emergence, centering the campaign on the event that begins the conflict.

Gears 5
Gears 5 shifts the lead to Kait Diaz, who investigates her connection to the enemy. It is the better fit if you want to continue the newer storyline rather than revisit the series’ origins.
These are different campaign premises, not two versions of the same story: E-Day is a prequel, while Gears 5 follows Kait’s investigation.

E-Day has the higher stated online campaign maximum: four players, versus three in Gears 5. Do not confuse that online cap with local play: E-Day’s split-screen campaign is specifically described as console-only. Xbox’s E-Day listing also says online campaign co-op and other multiplayer features require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer; that subscription is sold separately, and terms may change.

Movement, combat, and engine
E-Day describes cover-based combat with modernized movement and traversal, built on Unreal Engine 5. That indicates the direction of its design; it does not establish that its moment-to-moment combat is objectively better than Gears 5’s. The official descriptions do not provide a controlled, side-by-side gameplay test.

The performance figures refer to different platform and mode claims: E-Day’s stated up-to-60-FPS figure spans Campaign and Multiplayer, while Gears 5’s 120-FPS figure is specifically for Versus on Xbox Series X|S and its 4K HDR Ultra statement is for Series X. They are not comparable PC benchmarks, and neither establishes which game runs faster on a given computer.

Does E-Day have split-screen on PC?
The Xbox product page specifies two-player split-screen on console, not PC. It does not establish PC split-screen support. The page separately describes online campaign co-op for up to four players; treat local split-screen and online co-op as distinct features.
Where to check E-Day PC system requirements
The Coalition’s Xbox Wire article dated September 17, 2026, with a revised PC specifications image on September 28, says complete E-Day PC specifications were revealed. The actual CPU, GPU, memory, and storage values are not included in the article text available here, so consult the current official [E-Day PC specifications announcement](https://www xboxwire.com/en-US/games/2026/09/17/gears-of-war-e-day-release-date-and-pc-specs-revealed/) and its specification image rather than guessing requirements from the Unreal Engine version.

- Pick E-Day if you want Marcus and Dom’s Emergence Day story, a newly described movement approach, or a campaign squad of up to four online players.
- Pick Gears 5 if you want Kait’s campaign, three-player campaign co-op that is also listed for split-screen, or the named modes Horde and Escape.
- For PC buying decisions, compare published system requirements for your hardware and wait for like-for-like PC testing before drawing performance conclusions. The official feature claims cited above are not a PC benchmark.
Xbox lists E-Day’s release date as October 6, 2026. Xbox Wire’s September 17, 2026 article says Premium Edition early access begins October 1 and PC pre-install begins September 29; these are release-timing details, not evidence of patch performance or play experience.
