Play Gears of War: E-Day first if you want a focused, story-led cover shooter and squad combat. Choose Forza Horizon 6 first if you would rather explore Japan, collect and tune hundreds of cars, and keep returning to an open-world driving sandbox. For most players who have access to both through Game Pass, the practical order is E-Day’s directed campaign first, followed by Forza as the long-term game.
The short answer
These are not competing versions of the same experience. Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person cover shooter built around a dark origin story, tactical movement and coordinated squad action. Forza Horizon 6 is an open-world driving and car-collection game in which exploration, events, tuning and social activities are the main attraction.

What kind of game is E-Day?
An origin story with a defined dramatic arc
Gears of War: E-Day is set fourteen years before the first Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde launches its first assault. That premise gives the campaign a specific historical moment rather than another episode in an ongoing conflict: you are seeing the event that establishes the world’s central trauma and the characters’ early relationship.
The result is a natural fit for a player who wants a beginning, a middle and an end to the first play session. The game is designed to push you through authored encounters, set pieces and combat spaces instead of asking you to decide what to do next in a large map.
Cover, movement and squad tactics
The Coalition built E-Day in Unreal Engine 5 and describes a modernized movement system with jumping, vaulting, sliding and flanking. Those additions matter because cover is not merely a place to crouch behind: changing position, crossing gaps and attacking an exposed side are part of the combat vocabulary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Those are targets rather than a guarantee for every Xbox, PC configuration or display mode, so your actual presentation depends on hardware and selected settings.
Ways to play the campaign
You can play the story solo, with two players in console split-screen, or with up to four players online. That range makes E-Day unusually flexible for households that share one screen as well as for established online squads.
The Coalition’s Studio Brand Director Nicole Fawcette summarized the project’s direction by saying, “Now we know that E-Day is a story that people want.” The statement reflects the game’s emphasis: this is a narrative-led Gears experience first, with multiplayer systems built around the same combat foundation.
Multiplayer beyond the story
Horde Siege is a 12-player player-versus-environment mode. Three squads defend Kalona, giving a larger group a structured objective instead of a simple deathmatch. Versus adds 4v4 player-versus-player matches on new maps for players who want repeatable competitive rounds, ranks and customization.

What kind of game is Forza Horizon 6?
A tourist-to-Legend progression through Japan
Forza Horizon 6 begins with your driver as a tourist in Japan. Progression uses Horizon Qualifiers and Wristbands, with the Gold Wristband eventually opening access to Legend Island. This structure gives the open world a sequence of milestones without turning it into a single linear campaign.
Playground Games calls Japan the largest map in a Horizon game yet. It combines rural and urban environments, multiple biomes, seasonal changes and vertical routes. Tokyo City is described as five times larger than Forza Horizon 5’s Guanajuato. The practical implication is that driving itself is a major activity: you can take a planned route, leave the road to find a shortcut, or simply explore how the landscape changes between events.
Cars, tuning and driving variety
The launch roster contains more than 550 cars. The game also introduces updated Forza Aero, window-livery painting, selected body kits and a new R performance class. Cosmetic tire wear adds visual feedback without being presented as a simulation of mechanical tire degradation.

That figure describes the in-game animation range; the feel you get still depends on the wheel, force-feedback settings and your driving assists.
Activities for a group that wants to socialize
Forza’s social layer is designed to let friends share a world without requiring everyone to pursue the same competitive goal. Convoys let drivers travel together, while Car Meets create a gathering point for showing vehicles. Touge Battles and Drag Meets focus on specific forms of racing, and Horizon Time Attack Circuits offer repeatable challenges.
The activity list also includes The Eliminator, Hide & Seek and Spec Racing Championships. EventLab lets players build activities, and Horizon CoLab extends that creative approach to collaborative multiplayer building. This is a better fit than E-Day when your group wants to talk, experiment and drop in and out of activities rather than maintain combat concentration for an entire session.
Accessibility features
Forza Horizon 6 carries forward American Sign Language and British Sign Language support. It adds Car Proximity Radar, AutoDrive and a customizable High Contrast mode. Those options can make navigation and awareness easier, especially for players who prefer more visual information or want the game to handle some driving tasks while they focus on exploration.

Which is better for solo players?
Choose E-Day for a directed solo experience
E-Day is the stronger first choice if “solo” means you want the game to tell you where to go and why the next fight matters. Marcus and Dom’s origin story supplies a clear narrative reason to continue, while cover encounters give each area a readable tactical problem. You do not need to maintain a collection, tune a vehicle or create your own goals to make progress.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That focus also makes E-Day a sensible starting point when your available play time is unpredictable. You can return to the campaign and immediately understand the current objective instead of rebuilding a plan for an open-world session.
Choose Forza for self-directed solo play
Forza Horizon 6 is better for a solo player who treats freedom of choice as the point. You can follow Qualifiers, chase a particular car, tune a favorite vehicle, seek a time-trial improvement, explore Tokyo City or build an EventLab activity. The game does not require you to play every activity in a prescribed order to make the world worthwhile.
The trade-off is that an open-ended game can feel less purposeful if you want a strong dramatic arc. Forza supplies milestones and progression, but the player supplies much of the motivation between them.
Which is better with friends?
For coordinated squad combat: E-Day
Pick E-Day when your group wants communication to have an immediate tactical effect. Campaign co-op supports up to four online players, and everyone is working through the same combat spaces. Horde Siege scales the idea into a 12-player PvE defense with three squads, while 4v4 Versus provides a compact competitive format.
Console households also get an option Forza’s documented feature list does not emphasize: two-player split-screen. If two people want to play together on one Xbox and one display, E-Day has the clear advantage.
For relaxed shared-world play: Forza
Forza is the better social choice when the group wants to cruise, compare cars, join a short event or build something together. Convoys and Car Meets let people participate at different levels of intensity, and activities such as Drag Meets, Hide & Seek and EventLab give the session a changing rhythm.
Choose Forza for a group that includes drivers with different skill levels or players who may leave and rejoin. Choose E-Day for a group that wants everyone focused on the same objective and ready to support one another in combat.

Neither loop is automatically more substantial. E-Day concentrates variety inside combat and replayable modes; Forza distributes variety across vehicles, routes, events, social spaces and user-created activities.

Platforms, launch dates and Game Pass access
Gears of War: E-Day availability
E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, 2026. The listed platforms are Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, with cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate and availability through GeForce NOW. Xbox lists The Coalition as developer, Xbox Game Studios as publisher and the genre as “3rd Person Cover-Shooter.” The cited platform list does not include PlayStation.
Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers can play E-Day under those respective offerings. Cloud play requires the Ultimate tier, and image quality, latency and supported devices can vary with the connection and service.
Forza Horizon 6 availability
Forza Horizon 6 released on Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 19, 2026. The Premium Edition offered early access from May 15. Game Pass Ultimate members on Xbox and PC Game Pass members on PC can play at no additional game charge from May 19.
The official FAQ says a PS5 version is planned later in 2026 but does not provide a day. If you are choosing specifically for PlayStation, treat that timing as unconfirmed beyond the stated “later in 2026” window.
What Game Pass changes about the decision
Game Pass removes most of the financial risk of trying both. Start E-Day when you want a concentrated story and combat session; move to Forza when you want an open-world game to revisit between other releases. You do not have to predict which genre will become your permanent favorite before playing either one.
Membership coverage and platform entitlements can change, so check the current listing for your account and region before subscribing or purchasing. The dates and inclusions above describe the cited 2026 launch arrangements.
Hardware and setup considerations
For E-Day
- A standard Xbox controller is sufficient for the cover, movement and aiming systems.
- Themed Xbox Wireless Controller hardware is the natural optional collectible for fans of the series.
- For local co-op, plan for two controllers and one compatible Xbox console and display.
- For online co-op or Horde Siege, stable voice communication and a reliable connection matter more than specialized hardware.
For Forza Horizon 6
- A controller supports the full game, including steering assists and the open-world activities.
- An Xbox-compatible racing wheel can make long drives, time attacks and cockpit-focused play more immersive.
- Shifters and cockpit accessories are optional; they are not requirements for accessing the car roster or events.
- Wheel users should configure rotation and force feedback for their specific device rather than assuming the advertised 540-degree animation range will match every setup.

Local Xbox household
Pick E-Day because two-player console split-screen is explicitly supported. Forza’s documented social features are primarily online and shared-world activities.
Online squad that wants tactical pressure
Pick E-Day for campaign co-op, Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus. Its modes reward coordinated positioning and communication.
Online group that wants to socialize casually
Pick Forza Horizon 6 for Convoys, Car Meets, varied short activities and collaborative EventLab building.
Game Pass subscriber who cannot decide
Start with E-Day, then use Forza Horizon 6 as the ongoing sandbox. This order gives you a directed campaign first and preserves the larger exploration game for sessions when you want to choose your own objective.
A practical first-week play order
- Check your platform and entitlement. E-Day is on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam; Forza Horizon 6 is on Xbox Series X|S and PC at launch. Confirm that your Game Pass tier covers the device you plan to use.
- Begin E-Day if you want narrative momentum. Play the opening campaign section solo or invite your group. If you are sharing one console, use the two-player split-screen option.
- Move to multiplayer when the combat systems click. Try campaign co-op first, then Horde Siege for PvE defense or 4v4 Versus for competitive matches.
- Switch to Forza when you want an open-ended change of pace. Follow the early Qualifiers and Wristbands, then spend time exploring rather than rushing every progression marker.
- Set a personal Forza loop. Collect cars, tune one vehicle, join a Convoy, test a Time Attack Circuit or build an EventLab activity. The game is most rewarding when you choose a loop that matches your available time.
- Add specialized hardware only after you know your preference. E-Day needs no accessory beyond a controller. Forza can benefit from a wheel or cockpit, but those purchases make sense only if you enjoy longer driving sessions.
Common mismatches to avoid
- Buying E-Day expecting an open-world shooter: its strength is authored combat and story, not free-roam exploration.
- Starting Forza expecting a linear campaign: its milestones guide you, but the main appeal is choosing your own activities.
- Choosing E-Day for a large casual group: its co-op is more coordination-heavy, while Forza’s Convoys and Car Meets tolerate different interests and skill levels.
- Choosing Forza for same-screen co-op: the documented feature set centers on online shared-world play, whereas E-Day explicitly supports two-player console split-screen.
- Assuming a performance figure applies everywhere: E-Day’s up-to-60-FPS and 4K targets depend on compatible displays and hardware; Forza’s 540-degree steering animation does not guarantee identical wheel behavior.
- Assuming PS5 timing is fixed: the official Forza FAQ says later in 2026 without a specific date.
The verdict
Gears of War: E-Day is the better first game for most undecided players because its focused campaign gives you a clear starting point and a satisfying contrast to an open-world game. It is also the obvious choice for local split-screen and for friends who want structured squad combat.
Forza Horizon 6 is the better first game when driving is already the priority. Its Japanese setting, seasonal variety, more-than-550-car roster, social activities and creation tools are not side features; they are the reason to play.
If both are available through your Game Pass plan, play E-Day first for the directed story, then keep Forza Horizon 6 installed as the game you return to for exploration, tuning and social driving.
