Gears of War: E-Day is set 14 years before the original Gears of War, during the first three days and nights of the Locust invasion known as Emergence Day. You play a younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in Kalona as humanity encounters the Locust Horde for the first time. It is a prequel in story order, but The Coalition describes it as a new mainline entry rather than a spin-off.
Where Gears of War: E-Day sits in the timeline
The simplest placement is exact: Gears of War: E-Day takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War. That makes it the earliest mainline chapter in the series’ story chronology currently identified by Xbox and The Coalition.

The game is not set during a later phase of the Locust War and it is not a retelling from the perspective of veteran soldiers. Its premise is the beginning of the catastrophe itself. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are young soldiers when the Locust emerge from beneath Sera. The campaign follows their first response, before the characters have the experience, reputation or understanding they possess in the later games.

What Emergence Day means in the story
Emergence Day is the moment the Locust Horde erupts onto the surface of Sera. The invasion is unexpected, and the people defending the planet initially have no established playbook for the enemy they are facing. Xbox describes the Locust as an unforeseen horror that Marcus, Dom and humanity must learn to confront.

The event matters because it explains the conditions behind every later chapter. The war, the devastated world, the military response and the personal histories of the central characters all trace back to this first assault. Creative director Matt Searcy summarized the choice of setting this way: “Why E-Day? That’s the moment it all comes together. It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day.”
E-Day therefore functions as an origin story without being a side story. It shows the first hours of a conflict that later games assume players already understand, while putting Marcus and Dom at the point where that history is being made.
The three-day campaign in Kalona
Xbox Wire describes the campaign as covering the opening hours of Emergence Day across three days and nights in the city of Kalona. That time span gives the game a compressed, crisis-driven structure: the characters are not moving through years of war, but surviving the initial assault as the situation changes from one day to the next.
Day one: the invasion begins
The opening phase is the first contact with the Locust threat. Marcus, Dom and their fellow soldiers must react to an enemy that appears from beneath Sera rather than from a recognizable front line. The important timeline point is that this is the beginning of the invasion, not a later counterattack.
Day two: learning the enemy
As the campaign continues, the soldiers have to turn confusion into a workable response. The official descriptions emphasize that humanity is learning to face an unforeseen horror. E-Day uses this early-war perspective to show why the conflict is so disorienting before military tactics and personal experience develop.
Day three and night: the first crisis is still unfolding
The three-day-and-night structure does not represent the end of the Locust War. It is a concentrated look at its opening chapter in Kalona. Later games occur after the world has had time to adapt to the war, whereas E-Day keeps the focus on the first assault and its immediate consequences.

Which play order should you use?
There are two sensible ways to approach the series. Your choice depends on whether you want the events in chronological order or the context in which longtime players originally learned them.
| Order | Sequence | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chronological story order | Gears of War: E-Day, then Gears of War and the later mainline chapters | New players who want the fictional history in order | You begin with the Locust emergence and then move fourteen years forward to the original game |
| Release order | Start with the original Gears of War and its successors, then play E-Day | Returning players and anyone who wants the series’ original reveal of its characters and world | E-Day becomes an origin-story return to the event that shaped the saga |
Recommended order for a first-time player
Chronological order is the clearest route if your priority is understanding the fictional timeline. Starting with E-Day lets you meet Marcus and Dom before the events that define their later reputations, then continue into the original game fourteen years afterward.
Release order remains a strong alternative if you want the same progression longtime fans experienced. The original game introduces the established war and veteran versions of the characters first; E-Day then supplies the missing account of how that world changed.
Recommended order for returning players
If you already know the original trilogy or the broader mainline arc, playing E-Day afterward highlights its role as a historical gap-filler. The campaign is designed around an event that has always been central to the setting but, according to Xbox Wire, had never been fully told on this scale.
Who you play: younger Marcus and Dom
E-Day is built around Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago before they become the battle-hardened figures seen later in the series. Their age and experience are not cosmetic details; they define the story’s point of view. The characters are responding to a sudden invasion rather than executing a familiar campaign against a known enemy.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
This setup changes the emotional function of the familiar protagonists. In later-war chapters, Marcus and Dom carry established histories. In E-Day, the invasion is the event that begins forming those histories.
Is E-Day a spin-off or a mainline game?
The Coalition explicitly says E-Day is “not a spin-off” but “a completely new entry to the mainline series, set earlier in the timeline.” That distinction matters when deciding where to place it in a playthrough. It is not an optional side episode whose events can be skipped without affecting your understanding of the saga’s foundation.
Calling it mainline also clarifies why the game focuses on the franchise’s defining event rather than introducing an unrelated cast or a separate historical period. Its earlier setting changes the chronology, not its status within the series.
Campaign and multiplayer modes
The official Gears of War game page lists several ways to play E-Day’s content. The campaign supports solo play, two-player split-screen co-op and online co-op for up to four players.
Solo campaign
Solo play presents the three-day Kalona story as a focused origin campaign. It is the most direct option if you want to follow Marcus and Dom’s first encounter with the Locust without coordinating with other players.
Two-player split-screen co-op
Split-screen supports two players on the same system. This is the local option for playing through the campaign together, provided both players are using the same console setup supported by the game.

Horde Siege and Versus
Beyond the campaign, the game page lists Horde Siege as a player-versus-environment mode and refined Versus player-versus-player modes. These modes extend play beyond the chronological campaign, so they should be understood as multiplayer formats rather than additional dated chapters in the story.

What the Unreal Engine 5 upgrade means
The Coalition rebuilt every character, environment and animation in Unreal Engine 5 for E-Day. Studio technical director Kate Rayner said the game contains over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5.
That figure is a developer-reported comparison, not an independent benchmark. It communicates the scale of the asset rebuild, but it should not be read as a standardized performance test or as a guarantee of a particular frame rate, resolution or visual setting on every platform.
Best Value
- Includes full game of the original Gears of War remastered in 1080p.
- Play five campaign chapters never released on console.
- Experience competitive multiplayer in 60FPS with 19 maps and six game modes.
For the timeline question, the technology has a practical effect: the earliest event in the story is presented with the series’ newer production tools. The visual upgrade does not move E-Day forward in chronology; it lets a prequel depict the first Locust assault with a modern rendering and animation pipeline.
How E-Day changes your understanding of the series
It turns a known historical reference into a playable event
Later Gears stories treat Emergence Day as the dividing line between the old world and the war that follows. E-Day places the player inside that dividing line, showing the opening hours rather than referring to them only through dialogue or background history.
It separates character age from character identity
Marcus and Dom are recognizable because they are the same central figures, but they are not yet the veterans players meet in the original game. Their younger versions make the prequel a character-origin story as well as a military one.

Because the Locust invasion is new, every defensive decision carries the uncertainty of first contact. The campaign explains why the conflict becomes the central fact of Sera’s modern history without requiring the player to begin in the middle of that war.
A practical checklist before you start
- Choose chronological order if you want the story to begin with the Locust emergence.
- Choose release order if you want E-Day to function as a later origin-story return.
- Expect a concentrated campaign covering three days and nights, not a complete account of the entire Locust War.
- Remember that Kalona is the campaign’s named setting and that Marcus and Dom are younger soldiers here.
- Pick solo, two-player split-screen or up to four-player online co-op based on how you want to experience the campaign.
- Treat Horde Siege and Versus as separate multiplayer modes rather than additional chronological chapters.
- On PC or console, check the edition and access date: standard launch is October 6, while Premium Edition early access starts October 1.
The timeline answer in one sentence
Gears of War: E-Day is the earliest mainline story chapter currently established for the series: a three-day-and-night campaign in Kalona that begins fourteen years before the original Gears of War, follows younger Marcus and Dom through the first Locust assault, and can be played as either the starting point of a chronological run or a later origin story in release order.
