Gears of War: E-Day takes place on Emergence Day, fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It follows younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first erupts onto the surface of Sera. Chronologically, it comes just six weeks after the end of the 79-year Pendulum Wars, placing humanity at its most vulnerable point: one long war has barely ended when an entirely new invasion begins.
The short answer
Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel to the first Gears of War, not a side story set elsewhere in the universe. Its campaign covers Emergence Day—the first Locust emergence on Sera—and the opening days of the invasion. The official Xbox description places it fourteen years before the original game and identifies Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as young soldiers fighting to survive their first encounter with the Locust.

Where E-Day fits in the Gears chronology
The easiest way to understand the placement is to treat the timeline as a sequence of two wars with almost no breathing room between them.
1. The Pendulum Wars end
Humanity has just completed the Pendulum Wars, a conflict between the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) and the Union of Independent Republics (UIR). The war lasted 79 years. That duration matters because it explains why Sera is not entering the Locust crisis as a stable, unified society. Its armies, political structures and civilian population have already endured generations of conflict.

2. Six weeks of uneasy peace
A dated chronology guide reported by Space.com says only six weeks pass between the end of the Pendulum Wars and the Locust emergence. This is not a comfortable postwar era in which humanity rebuilds. It is a short interval in which institutions are still adjusting from one conflict before a more existential threat appears.
3. Emergence Day begins
Emergence Day is the first time the Locust break onto the surface of Sera in force. It is the event the game dramatizes: the moment an enemy previously unknown to surface civilization turns a period of human warfare into a fight for survival. Marcus and Dom are present at this transition as young soldiers, rather than as the experienced veterans seen later.
4. The original Gears of War follows fourteen years later
The first Gears of War begins fourteen years after E-Day. By then, the Locust War has reshaped human society and the characters have been changed by years of fighting. The gap is therefore large enough for the consequences of the first invasion to become the defining reality of the original trilogy, while still making E-Day a direct foundation for it.
What “Emergence Day” means in this timeline
Emergence Day is more than the name of a battle. It marks the public arrival of the Locust and the beginning of the Locust War on the surface. Before it, humanity’s central military memory is a conflict against other human powers. After it, the strategic problem is survival against an enemy rising from beneath Sera.

That change gives the date its importance. The event establishes the threat, exposes the limits of human preparedness and forces societies that have just ended a 79-year war to redirect themselves again. Calling E-Day an “origin story” reflects this function: it shows how the central crisis of the series starts, rather than dropping the player into a war that is already familiar to its characters.
Why Marcus and Dom are different in E-Day
Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are not being introduced as the hardened soldiers associated with the original game. Xbox’s description specifically calls them young soldiers. Their position in the timeline means they encounter the Locust at the beginning of the invasion, when the enemy is new to them and to the wider surface population.
They meet the threat at its beginning
The story is built around first contact with the Locust, not a later operation in an established campaign. That changes the dramatic question. The characters are not simply trying to win a battle inside a known war; they are trying to understand what is happening while the invasion is spreading.

When the original Gears of War takes place fourteen years later, Marcus and Dom carry the experience of the intervening Locust War. E-Day lets the series show the starting point for that transformation. It does not require the player to treat them as strangers to their future selves; it presents the formative disaster that helps explain why those later versions exist.

E-Day compared with the original Gears of War
The two games are connected directly, but they serve different narrative purposes. The comparison below focuses on chronology and story function rather than gameplay features.
| Comparison point | Gears of War: E-Day | Original Gears of War |
|---|---|---|
| Chronological position | Emergence Day, fourteen years before the original game | Fourteen years after E-Day |
| Marcus and Dom | Young soldiers encountering the invasion at its start | More experienced fighters shaped by the intervening war |
| Locust status | First emergence on the surface of Sera | An established enemy in an ongoing war |
| Narrative role | Origin story and beginning of the central disaster | Continuation of a conflict that has already transformed society |
| Human context | Six weeks after the Pendulum Wars end | A society living with the consequences of the Locust War |
A step-by-step timeline
- The COG–UIR Pendulum Wars run for 79 years. Humanity’s long intergovernmental conflict finally ends.
- A six-week interval follows. The pause is measured from the end of the Pendulum Wars to the Locust emergence, according to Space.com’s 2026 chronology report.
- The Locust emerge on Sera. This first surface invasion is Emergence Day.
- Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fight in the opening days. Their youth and lack of prior Locust experience distinguish this story from the later games.
- The Locust War changes human society. The original Gears of War takes place fourteen years after the initial emergence, when the conflict is no longer a surprise but the defining condition of life on Sera.
Why the six-week gap matters
The six-week figure is easy to overlook, but it gives E-Day a specific emotional and strategic setting. The COG and UIR have not had years to demobilize, rebuild or settle the political consequences of their own war. Their forces and institutions are coming out of a 79-year conflict when the Locust appear.
That compressed sequence also connects the two wars without making them the same conflict. The Pendulum Wars are a human struggle over power and political alignment; E-Day introduces a threat that challenges the survival of every surface society. The short interval makes the Locust attack feel like a second catastrophe arriving before the first has been fully processed.

Fourteen years is long enough for the original game’s world to feel fundamentally different from the world on E-Day. A generation of soldiers can be trained under wartime conditions, civilians can grow up knowing the Locust as a permanent danger, and political decisions can be judged by whether they preserve human survival rather than by the old COG–UIR divisions.
At the same time, the interval is short enough to keep E-Day closely tied to the original cast. The people and institutions affected by the first emergence are still part of the later setting. The prequel therefore supplies context for the original game instead of replacing its premise with an unrelated historical episode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is E-Day a spin-off or a mainline game?
It is a mainline Gears of War entry. Xbox’s 2024 announcement calls it a new mainline title and says it tells the story of the first Locust emergence on Sera. “Origin story” describes its position at the beginning of the chronology; it does not indicate that the game is outside the core canon.
This distinction matters when deciding how to approach the story. E-Day is designed to expand the established history of the series while remaining part of its central narrative. Its events are the foundation for the conflict that defines the original game and the wider Locust War.

- No exact calendar year for E-Day is given in these descriptions.
- No precise ages for Marcus or Dom are stated.
- The fourteen-year interval should not be converted into an exact number of days or a more specific date without an additional canonical source.
Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a common timeline mistake: treating a precise interval as if it also supplies details that have not been stated. The chronology is firm about sequence and distance, while some calendar-level information remains unspecified.

How to place E-Day when revisiting the series
If you are playing in story order, begin with E-Day, then move to the original Gears of War and the later entries. This order foregrounds the historical chain: the Pendulum Wars, the first emergence, the transformation of Marcus and Dom, and the established Locust War.
If you are playing in release or familiar-character order, start with the original game and use E-Day as a prequel explanation. In that approach, the fourteen-year jump becomes a deliberate contrast between the veterans the player already knows and the younger soldiers facing the disaster for the first time.
Neither order changes the canonical placement. The useful choice depends on whether you want the Locust invasion introduced as a mystery at the start of a war or understood first as the event that created the later world.
The timeline’s practical takeaway
E-Day occupies the hinge between two eras of human history on Sera. It comes after the longest human war in the supplied chronology, only six weeks later, and before the society seen in the original game by fourteen years. That positioning explains why the campaign can function simultaneously as a first-contact story for the Locust, a formative chapter for Marcus and Dom, and the opening act of the mainline Gears of War conflict.
