As of October 3, 2026, early reviews of Gears of War: E-Day lean positive, but they are not unanimous and the review pool is still incomplete. Separately, Eurogamer reports that anonymous employees at developer The Coalition fear further layoffs and uncertainty over a review-score bonus. That fear is not a confirmed announcement of planned cuts at the studio.
Are Gears of War: E-Day reviews good?
So far, the critical reception is broadly favorable, with meaningful reservations. GamesRadar+ reported that most scored reviews in its Metacritic snapshot were categorized as Positive, while three were Mixed; it also noted that several outlets had not yet posted scored reviews. Combat is the clearest positive thread in the two detailed reviews cited here. Tom’s Guide described the cover shooter action as satisfying and highlighted the presentation and the central duo. Where the criticism lands
The main counterpoint is not that the core combat fails, but that repetition can make the campaign less compelling. Tom’s Guide flagged recurring battle banter; The Guardian argued the campaign and content around combat feel repetitive and disappointing. The critical response is therefore better described as favorable but divided than as uniformly enthusiastic.
Why are Coalition developers reportedly worried about layoffs?
Eurogamer reported on October 1 that multiple anonymous sources at The Coalition’s Vancouver studio feared further cuts after a new wave of Xbox layoffs and the departure of story director Juan Vaca. The report describes employee concerns and a change in perceived job security; it does not establish that Microsoft or The Coalition announced another studio-wide layoff plan. Vaca’s departure is a separate, reported individual layoff. PC Gamer reported on September 27 that Vaca said on LinkedIn that he was part of a Microsoft layoff round. The same report said E-Day had gone gold days earlier and listed October 6, 2026 as its planned full release date at that time. Eurogamer said it verified an internal email describing a bonus linked to E-Day’s Metacritic performance. According to that report, recipients had to be full-time employees at the time of payout, which was expected near the end of October 2026. The report said it remained unclear whether current employees laid off before payment would still receive the bonus. It separately understood that recently affected staff such as Vaca remained eligible if targets were met.
