But the praise is not unanimous: some reviewers found the campaign repetitive or its story and design choices underwhelming. The scores also come with an important limit: Versus and Horde Siege were unavailable to reviewers during the early review period, so this is not yet a verdict on the full multiplayer package.
What the early review scores say
In an October 2, 2026 roundup, Windows Central reported an 88 on Metacritic and an 87 on OpenCritic. Pure Xbox reported an 88 on Metacritic in its roundup. These are dated snapshots of aggregator scores, which can change as more reviews are added; they should not be read as a permanent consensus.

The overall picture is favorable, but the scores tell only part of the story. The positive response centers on the campaign’s familiar Gears combat and darker atmosphere. Reviewers differ more sharply over how well the story, pacing, exploration, and boss encounters support that action.

Combat that still feels like Gears
Tom’s Guide praises the cover-based shooting and the return of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago. The Guardian also recognizes the tactical, cover-centered fighting as a distinctive strength of the series, even while criticizing other parts of the campaign. The appeal is continuity rather than reinvention: E-Day refines a familiar combat loop instead of rebuilding it from scratch.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
A darker atmosphere and strong presentation
Several favorable reviews point to vivid visuals and a renewed emphasis on horror. That tonal shift connects the campaign with the series’ darker roots and gives its action a different texture from a straightforward run of firefights. For players looking for Gears’ mix of heavy weapons, cover, and menace, those are central reasons the early response is positive.
Where reviews diverge
Pacing, repetition, and story
The Guardian’s review is a clear counterpoint to the upbeat roundup framing: it finds the combat strong but describes the surrounding campaign as repetitive and disappointing. The Independent is more favorable overall, while noting concerns about story depth, repeated sections, and performance. These are individual reviewers’ assessments, not guarantees of how every player will respond, but they show why “return to form” is not an uncontested verdict.

Exploration and boss fights
Some reviewers object to open-world-lite sections that, in their view, do not make exploration rewarding. Windows Central’s review-in-progress also criticizes exploration and boss design, while the roundup reports complaints about damage-spongy boss fights. These criticisms concern how the campaign’s encounters and in-between sections are paced; they do not negate the praise for its basic gunplay.
Why these reviews do not settle the multiplayer question
The early coverage chiefly assesses the campaign. Pure Xbox says Versus and Horde Siege were locked during its review period. Windows Central marked its review in progress because Siege and Versus were disabled in its build, and GamesRadar+ likewise said it would revisit its piece once multiplayer was online before scoring the whole game.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
That means the reported aggregator figures should not be treated as a complete judgment of E-Day’s multiplayer modes. Players deciding primarily on Versus or Horde Siege should look for coverage that evaluates those modes once reviewers have access; the cited early campaign reviews cannot answer whether they deliver.
Is Gears of War: E-Day worth playing?
If you want a story campaign built around tactical cover shooting, a familiar cast, and a darker Gears atmosphere, early reviews suggest E-Day is worth considering. If your priorities are a tightly paced story, consistently rewarding exploration, or boss fights that avoid prolonged damage exchanges, the critical reviews identify reasons to be cautious. Your interest in multiplayer is a separate decision: the early reviews discussed here do not assess Versus or Horde Siege.
